Boots, on the stairs of the long shed, before the bell.
Jayde knew them by the weight. Meifen came up a stair as if it had been laid for her personally, and she meant to check every tread, and she came up this one at first bell on a Restday with a satchel over her shoulder that Jayde could hear knocking against the rail.
The shed was cold. The brazier had not been lit. Gray light lay along the trestle and the board and the twenty-one coins, and the order was still pinned to the frame: Nothing comes to me, with the crossing-out under it. Nobody had taken it down. Jayde had found, every morning since, that she did not want to.
"Commander."
"Meifen."
"What you asked for." Meifen set the satchel on the trestle and unbuckled it. "The Temple's young man. Everything I have on him, and the dates."
