Cangwei went to height to think, and always had.
At the house it had been the north gallery, the long stone balcony above the drill yard where nobody went in winter. Here it was the rise at the head of the sanctuary, a shoulder of gray rock that came up out of the grass above the willow and the pond, with a flat place on top big enough for one person to sit. Flying to it was beyond her. The wing that was a hand's width short would not carry her that far, and she had stopped testing it. So she climbed it, in human form, with one hand, which took a quarter of an hour and was the most undignified thing she did every day, and nobody had ever once remarked on it.
From the top she could see the whole of the sanctuary laid out like a page.
