Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Boundaries Meant to Be Broken

"Hawk, take a look at the data."

"One hundred and eight."

"Hawk, I need to go to the SL Research Room, please gather the materials on my desk for me."

"No problem."

"Hawk..."

Today marks Hawk's twentieth day working a summer job at Osborn Biotechnology.

But he has yet to find an opportunity to visit Dr. Connor's lab.

In these twenty days, let alone visiting Dr. Connor's lab, he hasn't even stepped out of the door of the Electrical Engineering Department.

He's been busy from the moment work starts until it ends, either helping people with data or on the way to help people with data.

And like now, helping to tidy up materials on someone's desk.

Hawk watched the engineer rushing off in a hurry and walked over to the engineer's desk.

Even though it's been twenty days since he arrived at Osborn and hasn't found a chance to visit Dr. Connor's lab, he's not in a rush.

One reason is that good things are worth the wait.

Another reason is because...

Though busy, the pay is really high here.

A weekly salary of eight hundred US Dollars, and the cafeteria on the eighteenth floor offers buffet meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Although last month Hawk entertained thoughts of robbing a bank, he ultimately did not act on them.

The most important thing.

Though a baseline is meant to be broken, before Hawk reaches that point, he intends to break it as late as possible if he can help it.

Because he's afraid.

Hawk doesn't know what he'll become after breaking that baseline.

As everyone knows.

Transmigrators always have particularly flexible moral baselines and carry an inherent cold indifference towards everything and everyone.

Hawk is no exception.

This is also why he never socializes, because sometimes, when he looks at others, he feels like he's looking at an NPC.

How should I put it, it feels like the world is drunk while he alone is awake.

The reason why he's willing to continue following rules after awakening his Little Cosmos is quite simple.

His previous life's education taught him to be a person—not to strive to be a good person, but certainly not an evil one.

This is why despite awakening his Little Cosmos, Hawk still lives quite humbly.

If it were another transmigrator, they might declare to the world the day after awakening: those who follow me will thrive, those who oppose me will perish.

Of course.

The most important point might be because he's kind!

Unfortunately...

Hawk feels that even if he doesn't want to break this baseline, he'll have to before long.

But no matter what, before that happens, he's still inclined to abide by it.

Having worked for twenty days, Hawk, now familiar with the rhythm of the Biotechnology Electric Power Engineering Department, quickly sorts through the scattered materials on the engineer's desk, carries them over to the file cabinet, and methodically puts them away.

At this moment, the office phone rang.

"Hawk..."

"I'll get it."

Hawk answered quickly, walked over, and picked up the phone: "Electrical Engineering Department."

"Oh, Hawk?" A familiar voice sounded on the other end of the line.

Hawk raised an eyebrow: "Gwen?"

Ever since Gwen brought him to the Biotechnology Electric Power Engineering Department ten days ago, he hadn't seen her since.

After all, he's busy.

Gwen is even busier.

Even though Hawk is currently in the Biotechnology Electrical Engineering Department, he's heard that these days Dr. Connor has been working in a frenzy on his experiments.

They're using lab rats not by the dozen but by the box.

Exaggerated.

Gwen acknowledged with a sound on the other end of the line.

"It's me. By the way, our lab just had a voltage instability, and Dr. Connor wants someone from your department to come and take a look."

"Alright, straight away."

Hawk hung up the phone and informed the department manager.

The fifty-year-old, completely bald manager, with a demeanor of having no desires or requests, looked around the empty office: "Each lab is reporting voltage instability today. It's probably the resistor again; we just replaced it yesterday... Oh well, you there, take Hawk and drop by Dr. Connor's lab and help them replace the resistor."

Following the manager's gaze, Hawk looked at the future Electro not far away, whose expression was simple and whose skin was black—clearly an honest person.

Indeed.

Honest person.

Max Dillon truly is an honest person, lacking any cunning traits often stereotyped with his skin color.

Hawk has witnessed this firsthand over the twenty days—if the Biotechnology Electrical Power Engineering Department had an award for hardworking individuals, Max Dillon would undoubtedly receive it.

If Max Dillon had any political acumen, he wouldn't just work tirelessly without recognition, resulting in even the department manager forgetting his name.

However, Max himself didn't seem to mind, perhaps already accustomed to being referred to as "someone." So upon hearing the manager's order, he only nodded, turned, and went to the storage room to fetch parts.

After a while.

Standing at the entrance of the Biotechnology Electrical Power Engineering Department, waiting for the honest Max, Hawk watched as Max approached: "Mr. Dillon."

Max's body jolted, and his pupils seemed to shrink at that moment.

His voice trembled slightly as he looked at Hawk: "You... know my name?"

With a smile, Hawk replied: "Of course, Mr. Dillon."

Though Hawk had no intention of overly interacting with the future Electro, that didn't mean he was unwilling to foster goodwill with the present Max.

Being kind to others is being kind to oneself, after all.

With this thought in mind, Hawk watched the tears in Max's eyes and said: "Mr. Dillon, let's go; Dr. Connor's lab just called urging us again."

Max snapped back to reality and nodded repeatedly: "Yes, yes, let's go."

Hawk chuckled internally and followed Max towards the elevator.

Finally, an opportunity to visit Dr. Connor's lab.

After stepping into the elevator with Max, Hawk looked at the ascending interface display and felt a mix of emotions.

These twenty days, he had repeatedly planned on how to sneak into Dr. Connor's lab.

But not once had he succeeded.

After all, it's not like going to a market.

Entering a lab where Osborn Biotechnology has heavily invested, betting on developing regenerative technology to take over future markets isn't done on a whim.

Eventually, when he calmed his mind and decided to go with the flow—what do you know, the opportunity to visit Dr. Connor's lab just came by itself.

Indeed.

Mental state is crucial; you can't rush things.

Silently advising himself, Hawk completed his daily self-reflection task.

Soon.

The elevator doors opened.

"Hawk." Gwen's eyes lit up while standing in the elevator lobby, watching Hawk exit and quickly approached: "What took you so long? Dr. Connor is already frustrated."

Just as Hawk was about to speak.

Gwen already grabbed him, hurriedly pulling him towards the lab direction.

Hawk was dazed.

But simultaneously, he looked at the nearby laboratory.

His heart stirred.

...
