Faye's POV

The savage attack I had expected never happened.

Hardy remained at the opposite end of the cave instead, his spine pressed against the cold stone wall. He said nothing as he observed me preparing our meal.

I worked with the meager supplies available. Hours earlier, I had collected dried branches near the cave opening. Now I struck my blades together repeatedly until sparks finally took hold. Flames began dancing across the wood. Heat gradually filled the space, driving away the bitter cold that had settled into my bones.

His eyes had fallen shut, though I could tell he wasn't truly resting. Every line of his body stayed alert, his breathing too measured. He was aware of every sound I made, every movement, even without looking.
