Chapter 16 - Call Of Duty

George got a call from his second son. He hissed as Tony's name appeared on his phone. He needed someone to talk to, but not Tony.

Tony has yet to recover from their most recent tense phone conversation. He would rather not get involved in another drama.

"You have a call.

Pick up the phone. It could be my father." Katrina made an aggressive contribution.

Her intrusion irritated George, and he did not hesitate to respond. "Keep your damn observation to yourself.

You have caused me more harm.

Do you ever get tired?"

A few minutes after barking at Katrina, George realized that Tony's call could be his saving grace.

George remembered correctly when Tony offered to come to the hospital to sign the consent form and begin the necessary treatment.

"Oh, how I nearly missed it. This could be it," George sighed regretfully as he grabbed his phone to call Tony.

Tony refused to answer the phone, just as karma would have. George called twice, but Tony never returned his calls.

George muttered as he looked at his phone. "So he is going to ignore me because I did the same thing to him? That was extremely selfish of him."

"The only selfish person in that story is you," Karina accused George, pretending not to speak.

George wanted to react, but he was not sure where to begin. He struggled for breath, sighed, and shook his head sideways in disgust.

Tony immediately returned the missed calls. It was such a relief to receive a call back. It washed away George's hatred for Katrina.

"I told you he was going to call back. If only you were patient enough," Katrina muttered from close range as George spoke on the phone with Tony.

"I just noticed a female voice in the background. Who is with you in the hospital? Tony inquired, shying away from his father's earlier question about why he refused to answer the phone.

Although the conversation was not on speaker, Katrina could hear Tony's voice. She and George exchanged a revealing look.

She started to feel anxious. She fixed her gaze on George to ensure she did not miss his response to Tony.

"Dad, I just asked you a question, and you have not responded." Tony reminds his Father again.

George lied: "The voice you heard belongs to the patient I share my ward with." He smiled as he talked about it with Tony.

Katrina was not pleased with the lies. She considers it slander and despises negative speech about her.

George became more excited than ever after seeing how upset she was. He saw it as retaliation for Katrina's words that had hurt him in the past.

"Where are you, son? Are you still going to come?" George addressed the issue directly.

"That is why I kept calling you, Dad," Tony said calmly.

The tone conveyed a negative thought to George. He could tell what Tony was going to say before he even spoke.

"You have not responded to my question, son. Where are you now?" George asked again, assuring himself that Tony's response would not break his heart.

"Dad, before I speak, promise not to be angry with me. I also want you to know that it was for a good reason," Tony begged.

"Would you rather not have me killed early?" George sneered.

"Certainly not. I apologize for disappointing you, but I will no longer be able to make it." Tony launched the sad news like a rocket.

George was surprised that he did not hang up the phone or yell at Tony. He just stated. "Ok. Is that it?"

"What exactly do you mean by 'is that all? Are you not supposed to be upset with me for disappointing you?" Tony was furious. It wasn't the response he had wanted from his Father.

George lamented, "You have turned down several opportunities to have dinner with me and your brother as a family." Regardless of Katrina's presence, he did not stop scolding Tony.

Tony exhaled. "Now I feel bad for causing you pain. How can I make things right with you? I wished I could be there. Unfortunately, my job is extremely demanding."

"It has always revolved around your job. You have no regard for me or your family. How long will you keep going like this? Do you even intend to start a family?" George snapped.

"Please stop it, Dad.

You are making it appear as if I did it on purpose. Of course, I would like to start my family someday. Who would not want to?" Tony fought back against his father's assumptions.

His voice became louder, sending a negative signal to George that he had made a deliberate decision not to appear in the hospital.

"It is now obvious to me.

Perhaps you are worse than Conor. Unlike you, he is not a pretender," George became enraged and terminated the call before Tony could explain himself.

He instructed Katrina, narrowing his gaze. "Make an immediate call to your father. I do not understand why he is taking so long to bring Conor here."

"Why should I be the one to call him?

He is your best pal. You had his phone number the last time I checked," She refused unequivocally, without hiding her feelings.

"Your father is not going to answer the phone. He is aware that I will ask him about Conor. It would be different if you were present. He is not even aware that you are with me. Do you get it now?" George explained in anguish.

"It is fine.

"I will call him right away," she agreed. She refuses to accept responsibility if anything bad happens to George.

"I see you received a call from someone. Is this my father calling?" Conor inquired of Kelly when he noticed the phone ringing.

Kelly remained silent throughout. He kept staring at his phone, wondering if it was appropriate to answer it.

"Have you suddenly gone deaf and are unable to hear me? I do not want to believe I was talking to myself. Is that my father calling you?" Conor screamed at the top of his lungs.

Kelly gave him the silent treatment, which he despises.

Kelly did not just ignore Conor; he did it deliberately, just to spite him.

Conor, tired of waiting for Kelly to speak up, grabbed the phone from her. He could not wait any longer for Kelly to speak.

Conor hissed when he saw the caller's name displayed on Kelly's phone. "Oh, that is your daughter. I assumed it was my father's phone call. How come you did not tell me?"

"Why did you put me through the stress of figuring out who was calling? Kelly, damn you! That was extremely childish of you." Conor handed the phone back to Kelly.

"You have quenched your curiosity. I sincerely hope you are happy right now.

Perhaps if you had been patient enough to let me speak, you would not have been disappointed.

Speaking of childishness, I doubt you fully comprehend what you just said. The only childish person in this story is you. You have never rebutted the allegations." Kelly confronts Conor without hesitation.

Conor, unconcerned about Kelly's ratings, resumed their conversation and commanded. "I do not really care what you think of me. I just need you to contact my father right away. I would like to speak to him.

Do not dare to waste my valuable time. Trust me, you will not like the outcome."

"Even if my daughter calls? Is that intended as a threat? Do you want me to ignore her call just to please you? You should have considered that before speaking." Kelly objected.
