Marshall D. Teach was once a crew member of the Whitebeard Pirates' Second Division.
To obtain the Dark-Dark Fruit, he murdered the Fourth Division Commander and fled to Jaya Island.
Now, Teach has formed his own pirate crew — the Blackbeard Pirates.
He came to this pirate gathering to make a name for himself! Since Crocodile had been defeated, the position of Seven Warlords of the Sea was left vacant.
From this, Blackbeard conceived a bold plan: capture a pirate with a bounty over 100 million, hand him to the Marines, and earn the title of Warlord.
Once he gained that title, he could use it to pursue his true ambitions…
But after days of searching, everyone he encountered was small fry — and his patience was wearing thin.
When Sandy and the others arrived, Luffy and his crew didn't attract much attention — but Sandy already had.
High above, perched on a rooftop, Van Augur, the sniper of the Blackbeard Pirates, spoke to his companion, Jesus Burgess.
"What a fated encounter. Storm D. Sandy, bounty: 300 million Berries. Burgess, our captain's troubles may finally be solved."
"Wehahahaha!" Burgess laughed. "Three hundred million! That's a juicy bounty. Should we grab him now, or call the captain first?"
Van Augur paused and replied, "He's not an opponent we should take lightly. Better find the captain first. By the way, where's Doc Q…?"
Walking along the street, Sandy naturally overheard their conversation.
Oh, for crying out loud… these idiots actually think they can hunt me?
He smirked to himself. If I take out Blackbeard now, that wouldn't be such a bad idea. Hehehe…
Feigning ignorance, Sandy followed Luffy and the others into a tavern to buy supplies and gather information about Skypiea. He already knew how this would go, but he wasn't about to spoil the story.
What was he supposed to say? "People here have no dreams, go find Mont Blanc Cricket"?
Nah. Too much effort. The outcome wasn't the point — enjoying the process was.
Inside the tavern, Sandy's eyes immediately landed on a towering man at the bar — over three meters tall. Blackbeard.
Moments later, Luffy plopped down beside him and ordered the island's specialty — cherry pie.
After one bite, both Luffy and Sandy made the same face.
"Hey, boss, why is this cherry pie so bad?"
At the same time, Blackbeard exclaimed,
"Hey, boss, why is this cherry pie so good?"
The three exchanged glares.
They each took a sip of the drink next to them.
Luffy and Sandy: "This drink's great!"
Blackbeard: "This drink's awful!"
Now everyone was irritated.
Sandy was the first to retort. "What, your tongue broken or something?"
Luffy glared. "Yeah! What's wrong with your tongue?"
Blackbeard bellowed back, "Maybe it's your tongues that don't work!"
They locked eyes, the tension crackling.
"Wanna fight?" all three said at once.
Zoro and Nami both sighed heavily.
Zoro grumbled, "You're seriously arguing over taste?"
Nami snapped, "What did you promise me before we came in here?"
The tavern owner, flustered, tried to calm them down. "Please, everyone's taste is different. Let's not fight, okay?"
Then Blackbeard asked, "You lot pirates?"
Luffy nodded. "Yeah."
"What's your bounty?"
"Thirty million Berries," Luffy replied.
Blackbeard scoffed. "You? That little shrimp? Quit lying."
Luffy bristled, but Sandy turned him around. "Who cares about bounties? Are you eating or not?"
Mentioning food instantly distracted Luffy.
After eating for a bit, Sandy told the tavern owner, "Pack ten portions of meat for us."
Blackbeard immediately interjected, "Boss, make that eleven cherry pies for me."
Luffy jumped in, "I want twelve portions!"
Blackbeard: "Thirteen!"
Sandy: "Twenty!"
Blackbeard: "Twenty-five!"
Luffy: "Fifty!"
Blackbeard: "Sixty!"
Sandy finally slammed the table. "You bastard—!"
Blackbeard growled, "Wanna fight?!"
Zoro facepalmed. "What the hell is wrong with you two?!"
Nami yelled, "Enough! I didn't bring that much money!"
Seeing the situation getting ridiculous, the tavern owner quickly handed Blackbeard his cherry pies so he'd leave.
After he was gone, Nami turned back to the owner.
"Excuse me, we're looking for information about Skypiea. Do you know anything about how to get there?"
The entire tavern went dead silent.
"What did she just say?"
"No way…"
Everyone looked at Nami as if she'd lost her mind.
"What's so funny?" Nami demanded, frustrated. "The Log Pose clearly points upward!"
"Hahaha! Upward? Maybe your Log Pose is broken!"
The room burst into laughter.
Nami's face flushed with anger.
Sandy watched quietly, his patience thinning. So these fools mock anyone who dares to dream, huh?
Before he could speak, a man walked in, laughing arrogantly — Bellamy, bounty: 60 million.
"You guys still believe in that old legend? Islands in the sky? What era are you from? Hahaha!
"The Grand Line's strange currents already proved it! The Knock Up Stream is one of them. Guess you've never heard of it, huh?"
