Chapter 1 - unspoken intimacy

The sunlight was long gone, instead replaced by the moonlight that illuminated the two teenagers faces. The boy couldn't help but stare at her beautiful face, her skin practically glowing as the moonlight hit her honey complexion and her eyes seemed to shine just a little brighter than usual. It was just the two of them, as always. Running freely like two birds that had just been released after being caged and sheltered all their lives. she let out a hearty laugh as the boy grabbed her from behind and ran into the cold ocean. The cool, salty sea water felt refreshing on their warm skin after a long day in the hot summer air. she ran her slim fingers through the boy's short brunette hair while he stared at her with his beautiful, puppy eyes. everything was perfect, nothing could ever ruin this moment.

RIIING!!

Then School bell rang, abruptly pulling the grade 9 girl out of her daydreams. thats all they ever were and as far as leia thought, it was all they would ever be. She was too much of a pussy to admit that she really did have feelings for him - her best friend, miles smith. That's just how leia davids was, she was stubborn yet gentle when it came to him.

Leia brushed her short, brown hair out of her face with her fingers while her classmates had already gotten out their seats and started filing out of the history class. Leia stood up, grabbing her backpack and the pink notebook that she had taken out of her bag so she could atleast pretend like she actually worked in class as she usually did. She waited for a bit, not because she wanted to, more like she was trying to skip the long, crowded hallway. She finally made it out of the classroom and there he was. Miles smith in all his glory, hands in his pockets, headphones on and it was quite obvious by the way a smile ghosted his pink lips and the way his cheeks flushed a bit by just looking at her, that he was infact waiting for leia. Anyone with eyes could tell that there was a certain tension around the two when they were together. Not an uncomfortable, lustful tension. No never, none of them could ever see each other in a lustful way, their intentions for each other were far too pure. It was more of a shy, cowardly tension that filled the comfortable silence that had become a norm between the two. Miles removed his headphones, placing them around his neck as leia approached him, he took her notebook and carried it for her, something he had just gotten used to doing from the start of their friendship.

"miss me? nevermind, that was a stupid question" miles said with a dramatic sigh before he gave her a smirk and a side glance as she walked next to the tall boy. "what makes you think it's a stupid question?" leia asked him with a slight raise of her eyebrows before giving him an eyeroll as she noticed the smile she knew all too well. "dont you dare say it" she warned him playfully as she feigned annoyance.

"it was stupid because you definitely missed me, i mean of course you did, have you seen me?" the brunette said as he cockily gestured to himself with his free hand causing leia to laugh and roll her deep brown eyes once again. That made his cocky smile widen into something softer - something only leia could do, she was his dream girl afterall, not that he'd admit it. Not out loud atleast, he was confident for sure but not when it came to things that included his feelings about the girl. "oh Gosh, you're so cringe" leia gagged playfully as she pushed the tall boy jokingly. When their hands accidentally brushed, both pulled away - not because it felt wrong, but because it felt too right. The two made their way out of the school's exit, the school was relatively empty so their voices were as clear as day and they weren't shy about it. They were loud together but most people just moved along with their days and ignored the duo who always seemed to be in their own little bubble.

They walked quietly for a bit until they reached the diner. The diner was one of their spots. They spent most days at the diner after school or they would meet up at the big oak tree by the lake near the old abandoned park. The bell made sure their presence was known as they entered the diner. Miles held the door open and walked in after leia, nobody seemed to notice them entering and thats how they liked it. To go unnoticed and just be treated like everyone else, despite their outgoing and loud nature. the two made their way to the open booth right in the back corner where they always sat and the waitress, sarah soon came over to take their orders.

Sarah was known for trying to play matchmaker, especially when it came to the two of them. Sarah was in her late 30s, single and a cat mom. Atleast thats what she told them, she never let anyone in on her personal life unless it was some story she was telling them from her teenage years. Despite that, she always seemed to know what to say when either one of them came to her for advice about the other. Which was ironic, cause they knew each other like the back of their hands and everytime Sarah's advice remained the same, you should just say it, you're 14 what do you have to lose? And everytime they left after giving her a swift nod and an obvious sign that they were in fact not confessing their feelings yet.

"the usual, then?" sarah asked the two as she raised an eyebrow at Miles who was sat next to leia which was unusual since he always sat across from her.

"yup, and dont forget the-"

"chocolate syrup and the extra ice cream on the pancakes not on the side" miles cut leia off halfway to finish her sentence and give her a smirk as if to tease her. The girl playfully hit his shoulder after giving sarah a smile and when sarah left, leia playfully glared at miles for interrupting her while ordering.

Miles rolled his eyes and shifted his position as his hands remained deep inside his grey school pants pockets. "What? You should be glad im such a good friend for remembering your oddly specific order" miles retorted.

Friend.

Right, thats what they were. Friends, just like they always have been, what was leia thinking? Daydreaming about her best friend? Was she crazy? What if he could read her mind? She internally cringed at the thought of miles finding out about her feelings by reading her mind and finding out she was daydreaming about him almost every second of every single day since she knew what the word "love" meant. Leia had convinced herself that all those hints miles had thrown her way was just him being a good friend. Little did she know.
