Further up the mountain, fortified positions had already been constructed. Concrete bunkers were visible, and the roar of engines echoed through the snow as a tank rolled forward.
Most people would never dare imagine charging a tank head-on.
Xu Dan did.
His figure flashed forward and collided directly with it.
The result?
It was like solid steel smashing into a plastic toy.
The tank crumpled and flipped as if struck by a falling meteor.
Violence was displayed here in its purest form.
—
Inside the Hydra base.
"What? You're telling me Xu Dan rushed up here alone? What kind of joke is this?!" Baron Strucker roared at the communications soldier.
Baron Strucker
But almost instantly, he turned away and calmed himself. His expression changed faster than flipping a page in a book.
Few people truly understood what kind of leader he was.
But everyone feared him.
After berating the signal soldier, he spun toward the guards and barked:
"How can we let some guy who plays games clear this level so easily? All of you—move! Go destroy him!"
Hydra soldiers had one defining trait:
Recklessness.
If their superior gave an order, they would carry it out without hesitation.
But their target was Xu Dan—the man who had shone in the Battle of New York.
Who in this world didn't know Xu Dan now?
Only fools.
Bootsteps thundered as soldiers rushed out in waves.
They didn't know that even cannons and tanks had failed to stop him.
If Xu Dan were a ferocious beast, these men wouldn't even be enough to fill the gaps between his teeth.
Baron Strucker knew this.
That was precisely why he sent them.
They didn't need to win.
They only needed to delay.
If they bought enough time, he could escape.
Facing a monster like Xu Dan head-on?
Only an idiot would try.
Xu Dan's combat capabilities had been analyzed endlessly online. Countless "experts" had dissected footage from the Battle of New York frame by frame, concluding that if you ever found yourself targeted by Xu Dan, you had only two options:
One—tie yourself up and wait obediently for judgment.
Two—run.
Run as fast as possible.
Baron Strucker intended to choose the second.
Hydra had secretly obtained fragments of alien technology over the years. It wasn't much—but perhaps enough to escape.
"What should we do?" the base's chief scientist asked nervously.
Everyone understood the stakes. If they were caught, death awaited.
No one wanted to die.
Baron Strucker snapped impatiently.
"Leave! I'm not facing that monster head-on. Anyone who wants to fight him can go ahead!"
"Objectively speaking… he does look rather sacred," the scientist muttered. "No wonder people worship him so much."
"Why? You admire him now?"
"No! Of course not!"
"If you want to live, hurry up. And where are the twins? Bring them. They've been freeloading here long enough!"
"You were the one who told them to relax and enjoy themselves…"
"Enough! Tell them to move!"
The "twins" were Wanda and Pietro.
Scarlet WitchQuicksilver
Once ordinary people, they had awakened extraordinary abilities and become Baron Strucker's final weapons.
In this era of monsters, having no superhuman deterrent felt unsafe.
Hydra had fallen far from its former glory.
Under the Red Skull, they had once commanded fear.
Red Skull
Now they were like stray dogs, hiding in mountains, constantly fearing eradication.
Ironically, they hadn't even had time to commit major crimes in recent years.
With Antarctic Enterprises driving rapid global development, Hydra had struggled to find opportunities.
Most days at the base were mundane.
People worked.
Played games.
Even Baron Strucker sometimes felt like he had adopted two spoiled parents rather than recruited weapons.
The twins lounged, played games, ate freely, wandered in and out as they pleased.
What could he do?
Ever since mutants gained broader recognition, society's obsession with superpowers had spread everywhere—even into Hydra.
But now it was time.
They had been raised for years.
It was time to use them.
"For someone like Xu Dan," Strucker muttered, "you need superpowers to counter him."
"The two of them seem to have gone out," the scientist said cautiously.
Since they started playing virtual online games, even Strucker couldn't control them.
"Seem?" Strucker growled. "I don't need 'seem.' I need them to meet the enemy!"
Even as he shouted, he hurriedly packed essential data for escape.
"Should we destroy the experimental data?" the scientist asked.
"Destroy it?" Strucker sneered. "Do you think Xu Dan would even care about our experiments? If we could afford Antarctic military weapons, would we be cobbling together this junk ourselves?"
