Chapter 22 - Divine Intention

Before the vase shattered, before the air shifted, before the Judicars even dared to speak, this moment had already been written.

Max does not stop him. Seth does not ask permission.

This is not about rage. It is not even about protection.

This is Divine Intention made visible and a love not born of desperation, but of design.

What begins in this chapter changes everything.

---------------------------------------------

I find myself standing barefoot on polished marble, cool and smooth beneath my feet. Light travels across its pearled surface before climbing the walls of glass stretching from floor to ceiling beside me.

Mountains rise beyond them, their snow-covered peaks brilliant beneath an open sky. Far below, a lake reaches the edge of the villa without a single disturbance across its surface, holding the mountains and clouds so perfectly that the horizon almost disappears between them.

I slowly take in the room.

Pale stone, glass and open space surround furniture chosen with enough care that nothing demands attention. Everything carries the kind of wealth most people would spend a lifetime chasing, yet the room seems almost indifferent to it.

Somehow, I know whose home this is before I see him.

Seth steps behind me and slides his arms around my waist, drawing me against the warmth of his chest. His breath brushes my ear, and the tension across my shoulders eases before I can question why being here with him feels so natural.

I let myself rest against him.

Of course, Seth would live somewhere like this. Beautiful enough to steal your breath and restrained enough to pretend it hadn't tried.

When I turn within his arms, his gaze is already on me.

His eyes are that impossible blue now, clear and brilliant beneath the morning light. As his gaze holds mine, silver begins to move through them, faint at first before catching around the blue like light beneath water.

I still haven't become accustomed to them.

Or to what happens to me when he looks at me like that.

His hand moves slowly along my back.

"I told you before," he whispers. "You have me. I will always be by your side."

My fingers rise to his cheek, and warmth gathers beneath my palm.

"I know, Seth. You don't have to prove it." My thumb brushes the edge of his mouth. "I've felt it in every moment. Every breath. Everything you've never said aloud."

Something shifts in his expression, and the silver threading through his blue eyes brightens.

My stomach performs a slow, traitorous turn.

This is probably a terrible idea.

Seth and I can barely survive being friends without bending reality around us. Taking whatever this is one step further might require emergency procedures and several reinforced buildings.

His gaze drops to my mouth.

Mine does exactly the same.

Well, that's helpful.

Seth lowers his head.

His mouth touches mine gently, and every thought in my head disappears for one dangerous heartbeat.

Then sense catches up with me.

I place my hand against his chest and turn my face away enough to break the kiss.

"Seth, we shouldn't."

He stops immediately.

His forehead remains close to mine while his arms loosen around me, leaving enough space for me to step away.

I should probably use it.

Instead, I look at him.

His arms remain loose around my waist. His gaze drops to my mouth for a heartbeat before returning to my eyes, and his fingers flex once against my back before becoming still.

That somehow makes everything worse.

His heart beats beneath my palm while those blue eyes search mine without pushing for an answer. The love I felt inside him remains there, stripped of every defense the man usually hides it behind.

My fingers curl slightly against his shirt.

Eric has moved on.

The thought still hurts, although differently now. He has a family and a life that continued without me, while I have spent all this time refusing to look too closely at the man standing in front of me.

Seth has stirred something in me almost from the moment he walked into my life. I have questioned it, fought it and shoved it into whichever corner of my mind seemed safest.

Apparently, that strategy has reached the end of its useful life.

Technically, I'm single.

Oh, what the hell.

My hand slides from his chest to the back of his neck.

I pull him down and kiss him.

Surprise holds him for barely a heartbeat before his arms close around me again. The restraint I have come to expect from him finally gives way as the kiss deepens, and my fingers tighten behind his neck when months of confusion, grief and everything I refused to examine come crashing into one spectacularly bad decision.

Except it doesn't feel bad.

That might be the problem.

He draws back enough for me to breathe, his forehead touching mine while a smile begins pulling at the corner of his mouth.

"Don't."

His smile grows.

"I haven't said anything."

"Your face has."

"My face is innocent."

"Your face has never been innocent."

A quiet laugh escapes him before he kisses me again, and this time I meet him without hesitation.

His arm moves beneath my legs.

"Seth."

He lifts me against his chest as though my warning carries absolutely no authority here.

"Put me down."

"You don't sound convincing."

"I can become convincing."

"I'm willing to risk it."

Silver sweeps around us before I can formulate a suitable threat, swallowing the marble, mountains and morning light.

When it clears, his bedroom surrounds us.

I stare at him.

"Show-off."

"You noticed."

"Hard not to."

He carries me towards the bed, and somewhere between one step and the next, my humor fades.

This is really happening.

He feels the change in me. His pace slows before he lowers me onto the mattress, one hand braced beside my shoulder while enough space remains between us for me to change my mind.

His blue eyes search mine.

Silver moves faintly through them.

My heart pounds hard enough to make breathing difficult, and suddenly every joke I could make seems to have abandoned me.

He says nothing as his thumb brushes my cheek.

I look at the man above me and think of every reason this is complicated. Every reason I resisted him. Every question still waiting beyond this room.

Then I remember the way his heart felt beneath my palm when I stopped our first kiss.

I remember how he let me.

My hand slides behind his neck and pull him closer.

Gold rises from my skin as our mouths meet.

Silver answers from him, flowing into the room until both powers surround us. Living Scripture appears within the gold while the Sacred Breath curls around it, carrying the symbols through silver before returning them to me.

Then the first currents touch.

Everything changes.

The connection opens between us so suddenly that my breath catches against his mouth.

I feel him beyond the warmth of his body and the hand moving against my cheek. His restraint reaches me first, still there even now, held around something far stronger that he has kept hidden behind patience and friendship for longer than I understood.

My fingers tighten against him.

He feels me too.

The realization should terrify me.

Instead, I kiss him harder.

His hand slides from my cheek into my hair, his fingers tightening as he pulls me closer. The other closes around my waist with enough force to steal the space between us.

His breath catches against my mouth. For the first time, his touch carries none of the careful restraint I've come to expect from him.

My name leaves him on a rough exhale.

"Max."

I have never heard him say it like that before.

Everything inside me answers.

I have spent so long wondering what exists between us that I almost laugh at the absurdity of finally finding out while Heaven's two most temperamental powers glow around the bed.

Typical.

My smile disappears when he kisses me again.

After that, there is nothing careful about what I feel.

The strangest, fiercest friendship I've ever had collides with months of confusion, loss and everything neither of us knew how to say. I feel all of it in the way he holds me and in every moment. He slows enough to find my eyes again. Each time, I answer by pulling him back.

Gold and silver brighten around us.

They need nothing more from me.

For once, neither does the rest of the world.

There is only Seth beneath my hands, his breath against mine and the terrifying freedom of finally allowing myself to want him.

I stop analyzing.

I stop resisting.

And when he whispers my name again, I let myself love him.

--------------------------------------------------

I have no idea how long I sleep.

Calling it sleep might be generous. I remember warmth, flashes of gold behind my eyelids and silver drifting through dreams I cannot quite hold onto. Somewhere between one breath and the next, the rest of the world apparently decides to exist again.

My stomach announces this development like it has filed a formal complaint and skipped directly to violence.

I open one eye.

"Seriously?"

Another growl answers me.

Apparently, divine communion burns calories.

I reach across the bed without thinking.

My hand finds cool sheets.

My eyes open properly.

Seth's side of the bed is empty, although the indentation in the pillow remains. I run my fingers across the space before catching myself doing it.

Well, that's concerning.

One night with the man and apparently, I've become someone who touches empty pillows.

Then something considerably more useful reaches me.

Food.

Cinnamon arrives first, followed by warm honey, citrus and something savory enough to make my stomach issue another demand.

"I'm coming."

The fact that I have just answered my stomach is information I will be taking to the grave.

A few minutes later, teeth brushed and face washed, I secure a white sheet around myself and head downstairs with whatever dignity remains available to a woman following breakfast by scent.

I find Seth in the kitchen.

His back is turned while he finishes arranging enough food to suggest breakfast has been catered for every version of me across the multiverse. Oats roasted with cardamom sit beside warm bread, fruit, cinnamon rolls and several other dishes I am too hungry to identify responsibly.

Silver curls faintly around his wrist.

The Sacred Breath reaches towards me before he turns, one thin current crossing the kitchen and winding briefly around my hand.

I stare at it.

"Traitor."

He looks over his shoulder.

His blue eyes find mine first.

Then they travel lower.

Slowly.

I glance down at the sheet wrapped around me and immediately understand why his attention has stalled somewhere around my legs.

"Eyes up, Head Leader."

His gaze returns to mine with absolutely no evidence of remorse.

"Good morning."

"That's better."

The corner of his mouth lifts as he crosses the kitchen towards me. Silver has begun threading faintly through the blue of his eyes by the time he reaches me.

"Sleep well?"

"Until my stomach declared war."

His hand slides around my waist, and he kisses me.

Whatever sarcastic response I had prepared disappears when my fingers curl against his chest and the kiss deepens. Gold stirs beneath my skin, drawing an immediate silver response from him before I finally pull away.

"Food first."

He raises an eyebrow.

"That sounded remarkably decisive."

"You clearly underestimate my relationship with cinnamon."

I slip from his arms and head towards the table.

"You did this on purpose."

"Made breakfast?"

"Made enough breakfast to manipulate a vulnerable woman."

"You nearly brought the world to its knees last night. You earned breakfast."

I stop beside the cinnamon rolls.

"I earned a kingdom, but I'll accept these as the first instalment."

He laughs behind me.

Breakfast disappears considerably faster than either of us acknowledges.

By the time we carry the last of our drinks onto the deck, the lake has caught the morning light. He sits beside me, and I tuck my legs beneath myself while his fingers find a loose strand of my hair.

For a while, neither of us ruins the moment by mentioning reality.

Seth eventually does.

"What happens next?"

My gaze remains on the lake.

There it is.

Eric.

The life he built while I was gone.

His son.

I turn my hand beneath his and lace our fingers together.

"I don't know what happens after this," I say. "But we have to face them. I have to face Eric."

His fingers tighten around mine.

I look at him.

"He has a son, Seth. He has a family." My thumb moves across his knuckles. "Whatever happened between Eric and me belongs to another life now. I'm not walking back into his and tearing apart what he built because I suddenly returned."

He studies me for several heartbeats before his hand rises to my cheek.

"And us?"

Of course, he asks the easy question.

I shift closer and climb into his lap, wrapping my arms around his neck.

"I've spent enough time fighting whatever this is."

Silver begins moving through his blue eyes.

My mouth curves.

"So, you're stuck with me."

"That sounds threatening."

"It should."

His laugh barely escapes before I kiss him.

His arms close around me as though they have always known exactly where I belong, and something inside me finally stops bracing for what comes next. I feel his smile against my mouth before his forehead rests against mine, our fingers still linked between us.

For once, being this close to someone doesn't make me wonder what it will cost.

I already know what he gives me.

Himself.

This time, I don't pull away.

----------------------------------------------------------

By the time morning gives way to something later, the peace of the villa has begun to feel dangerously easy.

My phone ruins it.

The shrill ring cuts through the quiet, and I reach for it with a groan. Unknown Number flashes across the screen.

It rings again.

Something tightens beneath my ribs.

I answer.

"Max..." Eric's voice reaches me through the line, quiet enough to erase the last traces of sleep from my head.

Seth glances over.

"What's up, Eric?"

Silence stretches across the line.

"Can I see you?"

I close my eyes briefly.

"Yeah. I'll come over."

I end the call and lower the phone.

Seth is already looking at me.

I turn into him and rest my forehead against his chest.

His arms close around me.

"That request came sooner than expected," he murmurs into my hair.

"You expected it?"

"Max, I'm surprised he waited this long."

I groan against his chest.

"Can we go back to breakfast?"

His mouth brushes the top of my head.

"We could."

I lift my face hopefully.

"But?"

"You know there's a but."

"I liked you better five minutes ago."

"That's unfortunate."

I stare at him.

His mouth twitches.

"Fine. Let's go deal with Eric."

------------------------------------------------------------

The moment I step through the doorway of what used to be my house, I know it isn't mine anymore.

Different photographs occupy the walls. Shoes I don't recognize sit near the entrance, and somewhere deeper inside, evidence of another life has worked its way into rooms that once carried mine.

Seth's fingers remain linked with mine.

I squeeze them once.

Then something hurtles towards me.

"MAX!"

Jamey hits me hard enough to send me stumbling backwards. His arms lock around my waist before he lifts me completely off the floor.

"Jamey!"

"You're alive!"

"Currently reconsidering it."

His laugh breaks halfway through and becomes something else.

I stop fighting him.

Jamey's face disappears against my shoulder as his grip tightens, and within seconds my shirt is wet beneath his cheek.

"We thought you died," he manages. "Both of you. We thought you actually died."

My arms close around him.

"I'm here."

He holds on for another few seconds before suddenly releasing me.

His head snaps towards Seth.

Seth's eyes widen.

"Jamey, don't."

"SETH!"

"Absolutely not."

Jamey launches himself at him.

Seth catches him through what appears to be pure survival instinct, staggering half a step as Jamey wraps both arms around his neck.

"I missed you too, buddy," Seth mutters, patting his back. "I'd like to keep my ribs."

Laughter breaks through the room.

Then everyone reaches us.

Campbell and Bruce pull me into another embrace while the twins crowd Seth and Jamey. Questions collide with laughter, hands touch my shoulders and someone starts crying again before accusing somebody else of starting it.

For several glorious seconds, everything feels familiar.

Then I see Eric.

He stands beyond them.

His gaze finds mine, and whatever he intended to say disappears.

Eric crosses the room and pulls me against him.

Familiar arms close around me. Familiar warmth surrounds me. For one heartbeat, memory arrives so quickly that my chest aches beneath it.

"You're alive," he whispers.

I close my eyes.

"Yeah."

He draws back and grips my shoulders, searching my face as though he needs proof.

"Max, we have so much to..."

His attention shifts past me.

Seth hasn't moved.

He doesn't need to.

I step away from Eric.

Then I reach back and find Seth's hand.

His fingers close around mine.

Eric looks down.

Understanding reaches his face slowly.

I don't explain.

I can't yet.

My gaze travels beyond him instead.

A woman stands across the room with a boy beside her.

Eric follows my eyes.

The change in his face tells me everything his phone call couldn't.

My fingers tighten around Seth's.

Eric has a family.

Whatever pain remains between us belongs to a life that ended while I wasn't there to see it happen.

Seth's thumb moves once across my hand.

I look at him.

His blue eyes remain on me.

That is enough.

----------------------------------------------------

The cold eventually drives everyone farther inside, where coffee and warm pastries provide something easier to concentrate on than the collection of conversations nobody seems ready to have.

I take a seat with Seth beside me while Jamey attaches himself to my other side with the persistence of an invasive plant.

I glance around the lounge.

"Where's Alec?"

Jamey drags a hand through his already chaotic hair.

"Upstairs. Sleeping, I think." His expression changes. "He's been weird since you disappeared."

"Alec has always been weird."

"Different weird."

My cup pauses halfway to my mouth.

"How different?"

"Quieter. Tired. He disappears for hours sometimes." Jamey shifts beside me. "Something changed."

I lower my cup.

Another question has been bothering me since Eric's call.

"And who the hell is Jeremiah?"

"Jeremiah, like Mr. Willow, has been accused of using black magic."

I turn as Lady Elsa enters the lounge.

She takes the chair opposite us, smoothing her robe beneath her before looking around the group.

"The problem is spreading. More sect members are turning to black magic, and the crimes associated with it are becoming increasingly severe."

Seth reaches across me, removes the empty cup from my hand and replaces it with a full one.

I glance down at it.

"Useful."

"Occasionally."

His knuckles brush my cheek before he leans back.

Eric notices.

I notice Eric noticing.

Wonderful.

"What exactly did Jeremiah do?" I ask.

Eric's fingers begin tapping against his leg.

Seth catches the movement too.

"Same method as Mr. Willow?"

Lady Elsa nods.

"Yes."

Seth leans back and exhales.

I already know that expression.

"Don't say it."

"Labyrinth of Books."

"I specifically asked you not to say it."

"You knew I was going to."

"That doesn't make it less irritating."

A voice reaches us from the doorway.

"Are you two always like this now?"

Every head turns.

Alec stands there.

His complexion carries the same healthy, rosy colour I remember, his shoulders straight beneath his shirt. Five years have changed plenty, but apparently Alec's face hasn't received the message that he's supposed to look exhausted.

He strolls into the room and drops an arm around Seth's shoulders before hooking the other around mine, crushing us together.

Apparently, whatever changed him hasn't managed to cure the attitude.

Then he smirks.

"Come on, don't be shy. Someone has to ask."

My eyes narrow.

"Ask what?"

His grin becomes unbearable.

"Whether all that disappearing involved any actual sleeping."

The room explodes.

Jamey collapses dramatically across Campbell's lap while somebody whistles from behind me. Bruce nearly chokes on his coffee, and even Lady Elsa's mouth betrays her.

Seth remains infuriatingly calm.

I raise my hand towards Alec's head.

"I will kill you."

"Worth it."

Footsteps strike the floor behind us.

The laughter dies.

The housekeeper stands at the entrance to the lounge, her hands clasped tightly before her.

"The Judicars have requested an audience, Max."

I lower my hand.

"Of course they have."

Six men enter behind her.

They wear none of the ceremony I remember from the Forum. Their clothes are plain, their expressions severe, and the room seems to contract around them as conversations vanish one after another.

The Judicar leading them stops.

His gaze finds me.

"Maxine."

Seth's posture changes beside me.

The man continues.

"You will come with us. Now."

Seth's posture changes beside me.

The man continues.

"You will come with us. Now."

Seth rises from the sofa.

The vase beside the hearth bursts into powder.

Curtains snap inward as pressure rolls through the lounge, rattling every window in its frame. Timber groans somewhere above us, and a fracture races across the nearest mirror.

He steps directly in front of me.

His shoulders block most of the Judicars from view while silver moves beneath the skin of his arms. He doesn't look back. One hand hangs at his side while the other opens behind him, close enough for me to reach.

Apparently, Seth has spent long enough pretending this particular instinct is merely part of the job.

I lean forward and slip my hand into his.

His fingers close around mine.

The house is still trembling beneath his anger, yet his grip remains careful around my hand.

A smile pulls at my mouth despite everything.

Apparently, the entire world is going to know I'm his to protect now.

One of the Judicars reaches for his weapon.

Seth shifts half a step, closing the narrow space beside the sofa.

The Judicar tries to look around him.

Seth moves with him.

The man changes direction, and Seth blocks him again without releasing my hand.

Seth keeps his eyes on the lead Judicar.

"You said what now?"

The man blinks hard. His gaze flicks towards the powdered remains of the vase before returning to Seth.

"Maxine is required to come with us."

Seth's fingers tighten around mine.

"Required."

The Judicar beside him reaches for his weapon.

Silver winds around his wrist before his fingers reach the hilt, wrenching his arm to a stop.

He strains against it, but the current forces his hand slowly away from the weapon.

Seth turns his head towards him.

"Try that again."

The man's arm drops to his side.

Seth returns his attention to the lead Judicar without giving up an inch of the space between them and me.

The lead Judicar's gaze drops to our joined hands before returning to Seth.

Something shifts across his face.

He came here expecting me to obey an order. Whatever brought six Judicars to this house must have seemed important enough to demand that obedience.

Seth clearly has other ideas.

"Perhaps," the Judicar says carefully, "you should hear why we need her."

Seth's fingers tighten around mine.

"Then talk."

The Judicar hesitates.

His eyes find me over Seth's shoulder.

"We cannot tell you here."

Seth shifts, cutting off his view of me again.

"Then you're not taking her anywhere."

The Judicar's jaw tightens.

"You may change your mind when you understand what is at stake."

Seth goes very still.

So does the room.

My pulse quickens as the Judicar looks between us.

Whatever they came here for, they aren't leaving without me.

And Seth has just made it equally clear that they aren't leaving with me.

Which leaves one rather important question.

What happens when neither side intends to move?

--------------------------------------------------------------

This was never about who drew first.

It was about who stood without needing to.

For the first time, Seth stepped forward. Not just in love, but in law.

Before the Judicars. Before Eric. Before the house.

And Max let him.

Because real love is not loud.

It is sovereign.
