Chapter 23 - The Last Grief

Before the ink burns and the truth is spoken, this chapter is your calm before the next storm. But it's a different kind of calm, the kind found after screaming into the sea. After choosing love over history. After realizing that grief doesn't mean weakness... it means you're ready to let go.

This is Max's release. Her vow. Her awakening. And for the first time, she is not alone.

Thank you for walking through the waves with her. You're about to find out what the Aeternal Lexicon means.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first Judicar steps forward, and two others move with him, spreading apart as they approach us from different sides.

Seth remains perfectly still in front of me.

I have seen that stillness before, and it rarely ends well for whoever caused it.

"I would stop there," he says quietly.

They keep coming.

One of the Judicars reaches past him towards me, and Seth's restraint ends.

His exhale sends silver across the room in a sudden rush. Breath coils around the man's wrist and wrenches his arm sideways before his fingers can reach me, throwing him hard into the Judicar beside him. The remaining men react at once, hands moving towards their weapons as Seth steps fully between them and me.

Silver rises around him.

"I warned you."

The currents spread before another weapon can clear its sheath, winding around wrists and forearms until every attempt to advance comes to a violent stop. One Judicar strains against the silver binding his arm while another tries to tear himself free, but the Breath only tightens with every movement.

Fury burns across Seth's face as his gaze moves between them. "You came into her home and told her she was leaving with you. I told you she wasn't going anywhere unless she chose to."

His attention returns to their leader.

"Then your men reached for her."

The lead Judicar draws breath to answer.

A thin silver current leaves Seth with his next exhale and crosses the space between them, curling around the man's throat before the first word escapes.

Seth's voice drops lower. "I would think very carefully about what you do next."

The Judicar's mouth opens, but silence follows. His expression changes as he tries again and discovers that his chest will no longer rise.

His hand flies towards his throat.

His fingers pass through silver mist.

Seth takes one slow step towards him while keeping himself firmly between the Judicars and me. "Nobody in this room gets to decide for Max. You can explain why you came, and then you can ask her what she wants to do."

The man's eyes widen as another attempt to breathe fails.

Seth looks across the remaining Judicars, his fury unmistakable now. "If any of you reaches for her again, I will stop being this polite."

Nobody moves.

The lead Judicar's stance begins to fail as his body fights for air. One foot slides backwards, his shoulders sag, and the authority he carried into this house disappears beneath the first signs of panic.

Seth remains between us.

Only when the man's knees begin to buckle does my hand close around Seth's.

"That's enough, Seth."

His attention shifts to me immediately.

"We are not here for a fight."

The lead Judicar's voice has recovered some of its strength, although the roughness beneath it betrays what Seth's Breath did to him.

Jamey glances across the room. "Well, that's new."

Nobody laughs.

The other Judicars remain where Seth left them, and the one who reached for me keeps his hands clearly visible at his sides. Whatever authority brought them through our door has changed shape considerably in the last few minutes.

Seth returns to my side and takes my hand again. The last traces of silver drift towards him from around the room, disappearing with his next slow inhale, but the tension they leave behind remains.

I look at the six men.

"You came into my home and ordered me to leave with you. When Seth refused to let that happen, one of you reached for a weapon and the rest decided advancing on me was a sensible idea."

The lead Judicar draws himself straighter. "Our instructions were clear."

"So were Seth's."

His gaze flicks towards Seth.

"Look at me."

The Judicar does.

I release Seth's hand and step forward. "Whatever authority you carry outside this house doesn't give you authority over me inside it. You want my help, you explain why. You want me to go somewhere, you ask. What happens after that is my decision."

One of the Judicars shifts behind him. "You misunderstand our position."

"I understand it perfectly. You thought I would obey."

Silence answers me.

"Now you know better."

The lead Judicar studies me for several seconds before inclining his head. It isn't an apology, and I doubt men like him offer those easily, but it is the first acknowledgement that this conversation is happening on different terms.

I gesture towards the empty seats.

"Sit."

This time, they obey.

The change is small enough that anyone walking into the room might miss it. Nobody here does.

Judith approaches with the drinks while the Judicars take their places, far more carefully than they entered. I return to Seth's side and lift my hand towards her.

"Refills on everything, please."

Jamey looks between me, Seth and the six men now sitting obediently across from us. "This meeting has improved dramatically."

"Jamey."

"I'm quiet."

He reaches for his drink.

The lead Judicar clears his throat, and the sound comes out painfully rough. "We came to speak of the dark magic spreading across the southern provinces. There have been anomalies, and your team has been near several of them."

"Funny. We were just discussing the same thing."

His attention sharpens.

That gets mine too.

"What kind of anomalies?"

His answer gives us enough overlap with what we already know that I glance towards the others. The mood changes again, although this time it has nothing to do with Seth. Whatever happened between us a few minutes ago can wait if the Judicars have information about the same darkness we've been tracking.

Once he finishes, I sit back. "Then our timing might be better than I thought."

The Judicar's expression tightens. "What does that mean?"

"We're planning a trip to the Labyrinth of Books." I motion towards the group. "We haven't decided who's coming with Seth and me yet."

That is enough to destroy whatever peace remained in the room.

Campbell nudges Jamey as Samantha immediately protests. "I never get to go anywhere!"

"You say that like we're discussing a holiday," Samuel tells her.

Jamey's hand shoots into the air. "For the record, I am extremely comfortable risking my life in a library."

Campbell looks at him. "You don't read."

"Which means the books won't see me coming."

Arguments break out around us as everyone begins making a case for why they should be included. I lean back against the couch, letting my head rest briefly against Seth's shoulder while the noise fills the room.

For a moment, it feels good.

Then I see Eric.

The ache returns before I can stop it.

Isabella sits nearby with the little boy held against her, one arm wrapped securely around his waist. Her eyes meet mine across the room, and uncertainty passes through them before she looks towards Eric.

I can't blame her for wondering.

She inherited a history neither of us asked for.

I pat Seth's leg before rising.

His eyes follow me towards Isabella, but he lets me go.

I make it halfway across the room before Eric notices.

"Max."

I stop.

"What are you up to?"

The question hurts more than it should.

I turn slowly towards him.

Six years.

Six years of loving him, fighting beside him and trusting him with parts of myself I had never given anyone else, and he looks at me as though I might walk across this room and hurt his family.

"Excuse me?"

Eric rises. "I just want to know why you're going over there."

"Then you could have asked me that."

"That's what I did."

"It really wasn't."

A chair scrapes behind me.

Alec stands.

Lightning crawls across his forearms as he steps away from the group, thin arcs gathering between his fingers before snapping against the floor. His face is harder than I have seen it since we returned, and the anger in his eyes is entirely focused on Eric.

"You did not just ask her that."

Eric's attention shifts towards him. "This doesn't concern you."

Alec gives a short, humorless laugh. "You made it concern me the moment you looked at her like she was dangerous to your family."

Jamey starts to rise, but Campbell catches his sleeve and pulls him back into his seat.

Alec takes another step.

Electricity runs across his shoulders and down both arms, growing brighter as his anger builds.

"I've known her since we were four years old. You knew her for ten years, Eric. You spent six of them loving her."

Eric's jaw tightens. "I know exactly how long we were together."

"Then act like it."

The words hit hard enough to silence the room.

Alec points towards Isabella and the boy. "Do you actually believe Max would hurt either of them?"

Eric looks at me.

His hesitation lasts barely a second.

It is still long enough.

Alec sees it too.

Lightning cracks between his fingers.

"She would have died for you."

Eric's expression changes.

Alec's voice drops. "She almost did."

My chest tightens.

"Alec."

He looks at me, and some of the fury leaves his face.

I walk towards him and place my hand around his forearm. Static moves against my palm, warm and sharp, before the lightning begins to ease beneath my touch.

"I've got this."

Alec studies me for another moment before giving a small nod. He doesn't sit down.

Of course he doesn't.

I turn towards Eric.

"What am I up to?"

He opens his mouth, but I don't give him the chance.

"Four years as your friend and another six loving you. After everything we survived together, you looked at me walking towards Isabella and asked what I was up to."

"Max, I didn't mean it like that."

"How did you mean it?"

His silence answers first.

I look towards Isabella and the child before meeting his eyes again. My hand trembles once at my side, and I close my fingers around it.

"Do you really think I would hurt them?"

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't have to."

Eric takes a step towards me. "This is complicated."

"For me too."

He stops.

"I came home and found another woman's clothes in my bedroom. I found a photograph of you with her and a child I knew nothing about. I learned in a few minutes that five years had passed and the man I loved had built an entire life while I was gone."

Isabella lowers her eyes.

I swallow against the pressure in my throat.

"And I still wouldn't hurt her."

My eyes move to the boy.

"I would never hurt him."

Eric looks away.

That hurts almost as much as the question.

"You should have known that before you asked."

Silence spreads through the room as I stand in front of the man I once thought knew me better than anyone.

Alec remains behind me, close enough that faint static still moves through the air.

Then Seth rises.

He doesn't threaten Eric or put himself between us. He simply crosses the room and stops beside me, his shoulder brushing mine as his hand finds mine.

I look down at our joined fingers.

He says nothing.

He doesn't need to.

For the first time since coming home, I understand that being hurt doesn't mean I have to carry the hurt alone.

Silver moves with Seth's next exhale, curling around his shoulders before reaching towards me. Gold answers beneath my skin, inscriptions spreading along my arms as the two powers meet between us and wind around each other.

Seth's anger hasn't disappeared. Neither has mine.

Eric sees all of it.

His gaze moves from the gold along my arms to the silver surrounding Seth before dropping to our joined hands. His expression changes, and for one painful second, I know exactly what he is seeing.

He remembers what it was like to stand beside me.

I refuse to wonder whether he misses it.

My attention shifts towards Alec, whose fists remain clenched at his sides. Lightning still crackles across his knuckles as he watches Eric with enough fury to make it clear that our conversation may be finished, but his isn't.

Alec finally draws a long breath and forces his hands open. The lightning follows the movement, retreating along his fingers until only a few sparks remain beneath his skin.

He looks at me. "You good?"

"Getting there."

His mouth twists. "Didn't think so."

I almost smile.

Alec glances towards Eric before lowering his voice. "He's lucky Seth got between you first."

Seth looks across at him, and the corner of his mouth lifts.

Alec catches it immediately. "You know I'm right."

"I know you're standing in Max's kitchen discussing what you would like to do with lightning."

"Reality-bending lightning," Alec corrects him. "The distinction matters."

A quiet laugh escapes me before I can stop it.

Seth's expression softens when he looks at me, although his answer to Alec remains dry. "You are still not practicing it in Max's kitchen."

Alec glances around. "She hasn't complained."

"She likes her kitchen."

"She likes me too."

Seth considers that for a moment. "Those are separate issues."

Another laugh escapes me, easier than the first.

Alec points at him. "See? This is why we're going to get along."

"I haven't agreed to that either."

Alec's grin fades when his attention returns to Eric, but he doesn't say anything else. He doesn't need to. He stood when I needed him, and I know he would do it again.

I squeeze his arm before stepping away. "Thank you."

His expression softens. "Always."

The word catches somewhere beneath my ribs.

I look around the room at the people who argued over coming with us only minutes ago. The decision suddenly feels much easier.

"Alec. Samantha." Both of them look towards me. "Pack light. We leave for the Labyrinth the day after tomorrow."

Samantha sits forward immediately. "Seriously?"

"You wanted to go."

"I didn't think complaining would actually work."

Jamey raises his hand. "I would like the record to show that I can complain significantly louder."

"Your application has been received."

"And rejected?"

"Immediately."

Campbell laughs while Jamey places a hand against his chest as though I have wounded him.

The sound gives me a few precious seconds before my eyes find Eric again.

He hasn't moved.

Isabella stands beside him now with their son held close. My gaze moves between them before resting on Eric.

I hope he gives her more trust than he offered me today.

Seth's fingers close gently around mine.

This time, when I look at him, I don't need him to rescue me from what I feel. I only need the reminder that I don't have to carry it by myself.

I turn my hand inside his and hold on.

Gold gathers around my fingers as I lift my free hand, and the air begins to open beneath the movement. A narrow line forms ahead of us before widening into the passage we need.

Seth waits until it is stable before stepping forward with me.

I don't look back at Eric.

We leave together.

-----------------------------------------------

The cliff rises above a restless sea, far enough from the house that the wind swallows every other sound.

I stop several meters from the edge.

Seth appears behind me a moment later.

Of course he followed.

I close my eyes and draw a slow breath through my nose, holding it until the pressure in my chest becomes unbearable before releasing it carefully.

"I'm fine."

Even I don't believe that.

Seth says nothing as he comes closer.

"Please don't."

He stops.

I turn towards him and manage a weak smile despite the tears already filling my eyes. "Just give me a minute, Seth."

His face tightens when the first tear slips down my cheek.

He reaches for it.

I step away before his fingers touch me.

The movement hurts him. I see it immediately, but he lowers his hand without trying again.

"I can't let you make this better."

"Max, I wasn't trying to."

"I know."

My voice breaks anyway.

I turn away from him and face the sea.

Wind catches my hair and throws it across my face as another tear follows the first. I wipe it away angrily and stare towards the horizon, forcing air into lungs that suddenly seem incapable of taking enough.

My hands close into fists at my sides.

I release them.

Another breath enters slowly as I spread my fingers and try to force the tension out with it.

My hands close again.

Harder this time.

Gold flickers beneath my skin.

"Don't," I whisper.

Whether I mean the Flame, the tears or myself, I have no idea.

I force my fingers open again.

They tremble.

Behind me, Seth remains exactly where I asked him to stay.

Another tear reaches my jaw.

I think about Eric looking at me across that room.

What are you up to?

My fingers curl again.

I see Isabella holding their son.

I see Eric watching me approach them.

I hear the suspicion in his voice.

My nails bite into my palms.

Ten years.

He knew me for ten years.

My shoulders begin to shake.

I fight that too.

"He thought I would hurt them."

Seth doesn't answer.

I swallow and try again. "After everything, he actually thought I would hurt them."

My voice cracks.

I press my lips together and stare at the sea while tears continue down my face. My fists loosen once more, but this time I cannot stop them from closing again.

Gold races across my knuckles.

"I would never hurt that little boy."

My breath catches.

"I would never hurt her."

The last word barely survives my throat.

My hands rise towards my chest, both fists clenched so tightly that my arms begin to shake.

I try to breathe.

I try again.

Everything I held together in that room comes apart.

The scream tears out of me.

My whole body folds with it as ten years of love, anger and humiliation finally find somewhere to go. The sound rips through my throat until breathing becomes impossible, and when it ends, another scream is already forcing its way out.

Gold erupts with it.

Living inscriptions race from my clenched hands and along my arms, burning brighter as I stagger towards the edge. The Flame follows every violent movement of my body, surging when my fists rise and snapping through the air when I throw my arms away from myself.

"YOU KNEW ME!"

My voice tears across the cliff.

"You knew who I was!"

My knees hit the stone.

I slam both fists down.

Gold flashes through the impact and races through the cracks beneath me.

"How could you look at me like that?"

I hit the stone again.

Pain shoots through my hands, but it barely reaches me.

"I loved you!"

The admission destroys whatever control I have left.

I fold forward, one hand braced against the rock while the other grips my chest. My sobs come so hard that I cannot draw a full breath between them, and the sea disappears behind tears I have stopped trying to wipe away.

"I loved you so much."

My forehead drops against my arm.

"And you looked at me like I was a stranger."

Seth still hasn't moved.

I asked him not to.

Even now, while I come apart in front of him, he keeps his promise.

-----------------------------------------------

The Labyrinth of Books remains untouched by time. Towering shelves disappear into the distance while corridors shift between them, changing direction whenever I look away. Ancient parchment and dust fill the air, mixed with the faint scent of incense that seems to come from nowhere.

Seth leads us deeper without hesitation. He turns through each changing corridor as though he already knows where it will lead, silver trailing faintly behind his exhale before disappearing into the dim light.

Alec walks beside me while Samantha follows close behind. Neither has complained about the amount of walking yet, which may be the most unsettling thing about this place.

Seth finally stops beside a row of older volumes and runs his fingers across their spines until he finds the first.

The book is thick and bound in black leather, with unfamiliar symbols cut into the cover. They shift faintly when Seth pulls it from the shelf.

"Blood Sacrifice," he says, handing it to Alec. "It explains how a warrior's strength can be turned against them. Blood becomes more than life during certain rituals. It becomes leverage, and the stronger the warrior, the greater the damage the sacrifice can cause."

Alec takes the book, and his fingers tighten around the cover. "That sounds promising."

"You have an unusual definition of promising."

"I meant horrifying."

Seth gives him a brief look. "That would be more accurate."

He moves several books along before pulling out another volume. Shadow Concepts is written across its dark cover, the surface catching the light with a faint sheen.

Seth passes it to Samantha. "This deals with the use of shadows as more than concealment. They can provide access, carry influence and distort what the victim sees."

Samantha studies the cover before opening it carefully. "Mr. Willow."

Seth nods. "He wasn't simply surrounding us with darkness. He was using it."

"As a weapon?"

"Among other things."

Samantha's expression changes as she looks down at the first page.

Seth reaches higher for the third book. Its spine is cracked, and the faded title takes me a moment to read.

Against the Holy Law.

He holds it out to me.

The instant my fingers close around the cover, gold moves beneath my skin.

I freeze.

Seth notices.

"Max?"

"I'm fine."

The inscriptions brighten once before fading again.

I turn the book over in my hands. "Apparently, this one has opinions."

Alec leans closer. "Your tattoos are reviewing books now?"

"They're very judgmental."

Samantha glances at the title. "In fairness, that one looks suspicious."

A smile almost reaches me before I look down again.

I didn't call the Scripture forward.

Whatever caused the reaction, the book did it first.

Seth watches the fading gold for another moment before continuing along the shelf.

The final volume looks newer than the others. Pale leather covers the binding, and its title has been carved deeply into the surface.

The Ritual.

Seth hands it to Samantha. "This explains how the rituals are performed and, more importantly, how they can be stopped."

Samantha immediately tucks Shadow Concepts beneath her arm and takes the second book. "Finally, one that comes with instructions."

"I wouldn't expect them to be simple."

"You really know how to ruin a moment."

Seth's mouth shifts slightly. "I've been told."

A scribe appears at the end of the aisle and gestures for us to follow.

We are led through another series of corridors before entering a secluded reading chamber. Warm light falls across a circular table surrounded by high-backed chairs, while shelves cover every wall from floor to ceiling.

Alec places Blood Sacrifice on the table. Samantha sets her books beside it, and I lower Against the Holy Law in front of me.

The gold beneath my skin flickers again.

I stare at the cover.

Alec notices this time. "Still judging?"

"Apparently."

Seth takes the chair beside mine while Samantha opens The Ritual.

The humor disappears with the first turn of the page.

We begin reading.

Hours pass as pages turn and notes gather across the table. Every section takes us deeper into blood sacrifice, shadow-binding and practices that violate laws I didn't know existed.

Seth eventually leans back and stretches his arms above his head. "It's after midnight."

Alec looks up from Blood Sacrifice and rubs his eyes. "That explains why the words have started moving."

Samantha glances across the table. "The words aren't moving."

Alec stares at the page again. "That's even worse."

Seth looks around at our exhausted faces and ink-stained fingers. "I expected commitment. This is becoming unholy devotion."

I wave him off without looking up. "Cults get results."

"They also nap between blood chants," Alec mutters.

Samantha's laugh catches me first, and within seconds all four of us are laughing harder than the joke deserves. Exhaustion has clearly lowered our standards.

I rest my cheek against the open page. "I can't decide whether I'm more tired or hungry."

A scribe enters moments later carrying trays of food and warm drinks, and I lift my head with more enthusiasm than dignity.

"I love this place."

Seth slides a drink towards me. "You said that about the food."

"The food is currently carrying the institution."

We eat quickly before a scribe leads us to separate quarters. Sleep comes easily and leaves far too soon.

By morning, we are back around the same table, and the humor disappears as the research continues.

I am halfway through Against the Holy Law when gold moves beneath my fingers, stopping my hand over the page.

"Guys, and lady, I found something."

Samantha lifts her head. "Thank you for remembering me."

Alec pushes his book aside while Seth turns towards me. A passage sits near the bottom of the page, faded enough that I nearly missed it, and gold gathers beneath my fingertips as I follow the writing.

"Dark magic was given to mortals by the Fallen and used to corrupt what had been created. Blood sacrifice, shadow-binding and the defilement of natural law spread through those willing to receive them."

Alec leans forward while Samantha closes the book in front of her, and I continue reading.

"A decree followed. Any mortal, spirit or being who used such power would face consequence, for the purpose of the Fallen reached beyond mankind. Their rebellion sought war against Heaven itself."

I reach the end of the passage and stare at the faded words beneath my fingers.

Aeternal Lexicon. Living Scripture.

Gold spreads across my wrist as the meaning finally catches up with me.

"It's talking about me."

Seth's attention remains on the page. "Yes, it is."

The title that has followed me for months suddenly belongs to something far older than I imagined.

Before I can ask what that means, Seth reaches for the book beside him and turns back several pages.

"Wait a minute."

His finger stops near the bottom as silver slips from him with his next exhale.

"And with the Living Scripture came the Breath, given unto one who would bear its presence in the world. Where the Scripture walks, the Breath shall follow, and through its bearer shall it move."

Alec's gaze shifts immediately to the silver surrounding Seth's hand. "So, you are the Breath."

Seth doesn't answer.

His eyes move over the passage again before returning to the silver slipping from him with every breath.

His expression changes.

I straighten in my chair. "What is it, Seth?"

He turns another page, searching quickly until his finger stops over a second passage.

"The bearer does not command the Breath. He gives it form, and through him the Breath enters the world."

Seth goes quiet.

Silver leaves him with his next exhale and drifts across the table. Gold rises from my skin before I can react, and the two currents meet above the books.

Alec leans closer. "What does that mean?"

Seth's ocean-blue eyes lift to mine.

"I thought it was my power."

My pulse quickens.

He looks at the silver moving between us.

"It isn't."

Samantha's attention snaps towards him. "Then what is it?"

Seth looks back at the ancient passage.

"The Breath was here before me."

The words strike harder than everything we have read since arriving here.

Seth doesn't possess the Breath.

He carries something that existed before he did.

--------------------------------------------

There it is.

The storm was never just weather; it was memory, betrayal, identity. And now that Max has let go of the final thread binding her to Eric, she's standing not as someone broken, but as someone remade.

What did you feel during the sea scene? Did the Scripture and Sacred Breath moment stir you the way it did me while writing it?

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

What does The Aeternal Lexicon mean to you now that it's finally named?

Do you think the storm has truly passed... or are we just at the eye?

And be honest... did you love Seth even more in this chapter?

Thank you for reading, for believing, and for breathing this story into life with me.

With ink and fire,

Amanda
