Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Childish Little Girl

The morning light filtered through the curtains as Luna decided to make a change in her usual routine. She opted to leave her car behind and dressed in casual clothes, a sharp contrast to her usual business attire. Her plan was simple: keep her identity under wraps. After dropping Arthur off at the school gate, she bid him a warm farewell and began her walk to work, blending into the crowd.

Unbeknownst to Luna, Max was following her. He dressed down, ditching his usual suit for casual wear, and followed her discreetly, his face hidden behind a mask and black shades. From a safe distance, he trailed her.

At a busy intersection, Luna came to a stop, waiting for the red signal. Her phone buzzed, and she glanced at the screen, seeing Sam's name. Sam, Emily's father, was a significant figure in her life, the one who had helped her reach the heights she had in her business. She answered the call.

"Luna," Sam's voice crackled through the line, "how's the battle against Max going?"

"Don't worry, uncle Sam," Luna replied, a slight smile tugging at her lips. "I've got everything under control. Even if my identity is revealed, I can handle whatever comes."

Max, standing just a few feet away, listened intently, intrigued by her calm assurance. How could someone so young possess such unwavering confidence?

Sam's tone softened as he changed the subject. "And how's Arthur doing? His studies, his behavior?"

"He's still a good kid at heart," Luna responded fondly, "but his cute face and kind personality are attracting more girls than I can keep away. It's giving me a hard time." She chuckled softly. "But one day, my little brother will grow into an outstanding man, popular among everyone. Though, it saddens me to think I might have to leave him if I ever get married. That's why I've avoided it."

"Every little bird must leave the nest eventually," Sam reminded her gently.

As their conversation ended, Luna noticed the red light was still on. She prepared to step forward but the light changed to green, forcing her to wait again since she had missed her chance to cross while she was on the phone. Glancing to her side, she noticed Max standing beside her, his presence curious.

"Why didn't you cross earlier?" Luna asked, suspicion creeping into her voice.

Max, caught off guard, quickly improvised. "I'm blind," he said, his voice steady, "and I lost my stick. I was waiting for someone to help me cross."

Luna, seeing his mask and black glasses, believed him. When the light turned red again, she took his hand, offering to guide him across. As they walked side by side, Max couldn't help but think to himself, "She's the first girl to hold my hand like this since my mother."

As they reached the other side, Luna released his hand and continued walking ahead, with Max trailing behind. A little boy soon joined them, walking along beside Luna. At the next crossing, Luna picked up the boy, helping him safely to the other side. The boy beamed at her, saying, "Thank you, big sister."

They continued walking together until they spotted an abandoned puppy in a small box. The boy's face fell. "I can't take it with me. I'm heading to school."

Luna knelt beside the box, her heart softening. "I can't take pets to my workplace either," she admitted. Pulling out her phone, she called Emily. "Can you come pick up a puppy? I promise I'll come by your office this afternoon to take it home." Emily agreed, saying she'd be there in a few minutes. Meanwhile, Luna and the boy went to a nearby store to buy some food for the puppy. They returned, feeding the little creature and playing with it. When the boy realized he was late for school, he dashed off, leaving Luna alone with the puppy.

She sat on the curb, talking to the puppy. "Emily will be here soon to pick you up. Don't worry. And this afternoon, I'll come get you and take you to your new home."

Max watched from a distance, his thoughts a whirl. "She looks more like a little girl, playing with a puppy, than the mature businesswoman she usually is."

Just then, Max's phone buzzed. His assistant's voice was urgent. "Sir, Luna's heading in the opposite direction of her office. It could be a trap if she's discovered your identity. Also, your father needs you at the office for a meeting."

As Luna stood up to leave, Max approached the puppy, lifting it gently. He watched Luna walk away, then called one of his men. "Follow her," he ordered before heading back to his own business.

Later that afternoon, Luna arrived at Emily's office to pick up the puppy, only to find the box empty. "It's gone," Emily said, puzzled. "Someone must have taken it."

Luna's heart sank, a rare moment of sadness overcoming her. Meanwhile, Max's man reported back to him. "She didn't go to her office this morning. She went to a construction site and disguised herself as one of the workers." Max raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Why?"

"Apparently, it's a common practice for her. The site is one of her company's projects. She often disguises herself to inspect the workers well being and the progress firsthand, making sure everything is in order."

Max chuckled softly, glancing at the puppy now sitting in his office. "She really does like caring about others, doesn't she?"
