Riley emerged from the bathroom wrapped in a robe, her hair damp and loosely tied back. The sound of running water had stopped minutes ago, but she had taken her time, standing under the spray longer than necessary, letting the day wash off her skin.
She walked from her bedroom, down the short hallway, towel still wrapped around her hair, then she paused in the living room.
Tom was still there, seated on the couch as he had said he would be, jacket on. His hands were relaxed at his sides, exactly how she had expected he would be.
For a second, neither of them spoke, then finally, she broke the silence.
"You're..still here," she said finally.
He nodded once. "Told you I would be."
She hesitated, then stepped just a little closer to the couch. "I washed my hair. So, whatever was on me, it's gone."
"I know," Tom said. "My phone confirmed it. I have this app that notifies me if there is a chip nearby. The minute you walked back here, I knew it is gone."
