The next morning, no one felt any different; everyone woke up feeling gloomy and sad. Jake got ready for school without his sister. When he arrived at school, he stepped out of the car and headed straight to his classroom. Everyone in the school just kept looking at him. He knew deep down that they had a lot of questions to ask him about when his sister was going to be back from the hospital. He gave no one the chance to ask him any questions regarding his sister, not even the teachers.
Meanwhile, back at home. Agnes knocked on Mrs. Anderson's door. "You can come in, the door isn't locked, " Mrs. Anderson said ." Oh, it's you, Agnes, " she added. " I came to see you Helen, I know how you feel, so there's no need to ask you anything about how you are doing at all " Agnes said as she got close to Mrs. Anderson to give her a warm hug. " my home is falling apart, and Peter is accusing me of something I know nothing about, can you believe it, it hurt so bad Agnes, I know you understand, I'm so confused, How is Maya's blood type different from ours, far different, I've known no man apart from Peter and he knows that, how can an Anderson cheat without getting caught, you know people got their eyes all over us and all around us " Mrs Anderson said. " I believe you Helen, I think you, but now you need to prove your innocence, you need to get a dna test done, as soon as possible, " Agnes said as she kept hugging Helen. " that's the best idea, but what happens when it comes out negative and Maya isn't our child, how do we cope with it " Mrs. Anderson added . " you know that's going to be the results, you should know that Maya isn't your daughter by now " Agnes said. Agenda kept consoling Mrs. Anderson as they both sat and thought about what was going to happen next. The chaos that was about to be unleashed. Meanwhile, back at Mr. Anderson's office, he was out having coffee with one of his close friends. When Jake's results came in, he opened them, and the results showed that Jake had the same blood type as them. He was calm for some time and lifted his head. John, sitting at the other side, noticed his facial expression and thought it was about his daughter Maya. John: I heard about what happened to your daughter, Peter. I'm really sorry about that. She should be fine soon. I guess Peter: Well, that's not the problem now; there's a more serious problem. John: What is it? Peter: The girl's blood doesn't match mine or that of my wife. John: How's that possible? Peter: I don't know, I'm beginning to think, to think that maybe Helen cheated on me or something. John: That's not possible. An Anderson can't cheat. You know how popular your family is, and how there are eyes on you all the time. Neither you nor your wife can cheat secretly. Peter: I don't know what to do now. John: Have you tried getting a DNA test done Peter: No, not yet. I don't know how Helen will feel about it. She might think otherwise. John: It's better to get this done and know the truth, and work on it before word reaches town. Peter: I'll think about it. Just then, John checked the time and told Peter that it was time to go home. John advised Peter to consider what he said and get the DNA test done as soon as possible. When Mr. Anderson got home from work that day, he went straight to his room. We need to talk, he said to Mrs. Anderson. "Talk about what?" Mrs. Anderson said. I, too, have something I'd like to suggest to you. "Let's get a DNA test, " they both said in unison. I guess that's it then. Mrs . Anderson said. Jake came back from school moody. He went straight to his room and said nothing to his mom, who was downstairs. Mrs. Anderson stood up, climbed up the stairs, and knocked on Jake's door. " Jake, you have to let me in, let's have a conversation," she said . " go away mom, I don't want to talk to you " Jake said . " sweetie, I know , it's hard for you and it's harder for me too, one thing I know is that it's going to be more difficult as time goes on, you have to let me in Jake, let's talk about this, Jake, Jake " Mrs. Anderson said while still knocking at Jake's door. She eventually gave up and walked back to her room. And straight to bed, hoping the next day brings some form of relief. The next morning felt heavy and gloomy; it was as if the sky had seen what was about to happen. The Andersons didn't say a word to each other as they drove to the hospital. And for the first time in Jake's life, he could actually hear the screeching of the tyres of the car. Inside the hospital, the air thickened with unease. Nurses moved around briskly through the corridors, but to Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, time was moving in slow motion. Jake sat beside his parents, silent with his eyes fixed on the tiled floor. The argument of his parents replayed vividly in his mind. He only hoped that whatever it was that they were coming for, it would at least settle their differences. They went ahead and gave their vitals, and we sat at the reception, waiting for the results. At last, the doctor appeared, holding a white envelope in hand. His expression was unreadable."Mr. and Mrs. Anderson," he began, "we've completed the DNA tests."Helen, feeling tense, reached out for her husband's hand; he didn't pull away, but his fingers were as cold as ice. The doctor continued, "The results here show that Maya shares no genetic relation to either of you, not Mrs. Anderson and not Mr. Anderson either."For a moment, everyone went quiet; no one breathed. The words hung in the air like a fog, thick and suffocating everyone. For Mrs. Anderson, this actually cleared the fact that she was being accused of cheating by Mr. Anderson. But if Maya isn't their child, then how come they have her with them? "What did you just say?" Mr. Anderson asked, his voice trembling."I guess I have to repeat myself," the doctor replied gently, "I am saying that Maya is not your biological daughter."Mrs. Anderson screamed, but no sound came out of her lips. Tears drew in her eyes, but she couldn't let a single one drop. She hadn't betrayed her husband, which was good but then she had just lost her child, her only daughter."So you mean she's not ours," she said,"She flesh of our flesh," Mr. Anderson said numbly, "nor blood of our blood." Mr. Anderson said as his voice trembled, his mind started spinning. "Then whose child is she?" He asked The doctor shook his head. "It's possible there was a mix-up at birth. We can investigate it and check the hospital records from ten years ago."Ten years. For ten long years, they had loved her as their own; they had raised her, watched her laugh and grow with them, never suspecting that the little girl who called them Mom and Dad wasn't theirs at all.Mrs. Anderson broke down shortly, covering her face with her trembling hands, and she sobbed. "How could this happen? How did you all let this happen ?" she whispered through her sobs. "All this while, we thought she was ours in every way that mattered to us ."Mr. Anderson wrapped his arms around her, trying his best on his own to console her. His eyes filled with tears, but as a man. He couldn't show his emotions. "We have to find the truth out and we will soon," he said quietly. "But as for now, we can't tell her anything not yet." Everyone had forgotten Jake's presence. Even he was trying to analyze what he had just heard. His princess wasn't his princess? He's not his sister? Then who is? He asked himself. They all knew Maya was still lying in her hospital bed, fragile and unaware of what was happening, fighting to recover as soon as possible. Telling her now would only shatter her world and make her condition worse. So made a promise to keep this a secret until they had found out everything in detail. As they left the hospital, Jake strolled behind, staring at the children playing near the entrance. His heart started to feel heavy with confusion . Maya wasn't his sister. Does this mean he has to find his actual sister now? Maya was a girl he had grown to protect. He played with her and watched her grow. And yet, one question burned silently in his mind, one that none of them could escape:If Maya wasn't and Anderson, then where was the real Anderson child, and is it a he or a she, and how will they find the child? That evening, the entire house was cloaked in silence and tension, almost making the air in the house suffocating to breathe. It was about to rain once more, so the air smelled of storm and moisture. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson sat on the edge of their bed and called out for Jake. As they sat there waiting for him, they were contemplating how Jake was going to take everything. When Jake finally entered their room, his expression was hard to read. He looked calm on the outside, but his eyes burned with rage and disappointment. His father cleared his throat. "Jake, Jake, look at me," he began softly, "we have something we have to talk to you about, and it's essential."Jake's eyes lit with some form of hope in them. "What now, you've found the actual Anderson ?"His mother took an intense breath. "You know, we got the DNA results today, right?"Jake frowned. "And what about it ?""You know she isn't…" Mrs. Anderson said, her voice cracking. "You know Maya isn't biologically ours, right? I know you heard it ."For a moment, Jake just stared at them. Their words don't make sense to him at all. When they did, they exploded in his ears. "So you are basically trying to tell me that she's not fit enough to be in this house with us, then," he snapped."Don't talk like that, my son, we've agreed on this," his mother pleaded, standing to reach for him.Jake pulled away gently. "Does this mean she's adopted? Doesn't this mean Mom adopted her from somewhere to cover up for the fact that her actual child had died? Then that actually means she's not one of us, right? She's not an Anderson, and she's not my sister! So we must treat her like we treat all non-Anderson""Jake!" his mother shouted with her voice trembling. "Listen to me, Jake, regardless of what the tests say, she's still your sister, if not by blood but by association. She's still an Anderson. Blood alone isn't what makes someone family, she added"But Jake didn't want to hear all that. His jaw tightened with anger; he told his mom, regardless, that everyone would pretend to her. He wouldn't pretend towards her; he's going to let her know her place as a Non-Anderson. And. Without another word, he turned and stormed out of their room, his footsteps echoing down the hall. His mom stood up to go after but his dad singaled her to let him go . " let him go ?" Won't you go and talk to your son to calm down? " Mrs. Anderson said. "Let the boy think about his emotions and figure things out on his own, " Mr. Anderson said. He's going to be very fine. Jake slammed the door to his room as usual, but this time he banged it so hard that even the glass walls of the mansion quivered. "She's no sister of mine, and she'll never be," he muttered to himself, his voice shaking with fury. Moments later, there was a gentle knock on his door. "Jake?, Jake? Can you open the door for me " The voice asked. It was Agnes. He opened the door quickly without hesitation, as if he had been waiting for her to come over."She's not my sister Agnes," he blurted before she could even speak. "They told me. Maya's not one of us, so why do they want to bring her back to this house? I don't care what they say to me; she doesn't deserve to live here. Not with me."Agnes's eyes softened as she held his hands. "Jake…""No, not this time, Agnes," he interrupted her, pacing up and down the room. "Everyone can keep pretending she's an Anderson, but I won't, I won't, because I can't forgive the fact that she made me hate Mom. I thought Mom cheated on Dad and had Maya. I won't act like she's my sister when she's not."Agnes sat quietly for a moment, her heart beating fast and heavily. She wanted to tell him that love was stronger than DNA, that hearts, not blood, make families. But looking at him, his movements, how his fists clenched, his pride wounded, she knew her words would fall on deaf ears; it wouldn't even make a scratch in his heart. So instead, she sighed softly and said, "Alright, my boy, I understand what you mean. Take your time; don't forget you have school tomorrow. You need to get ready early. So let's get you ready for bed."Jake didn't respond. Agnes tucked him into his bed silently, brushed his hair from his forehead, and kissed him gently on his forehead like she always had. "Goodnight, Jake," she whispered."Goodnight," he said flatly, turning away as the room fell into uneasy silence.
