Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Wolf's Wedding Plans

Chapter 15: The Wolf's Wedding Plans

POV: Geralt

The raven arrived at dawn, its black wings cutting through Harrenhal's perpetual gloom like an omen of disaster. I watched from the kitchen courtyard as it landed in the rookery, carrying news that would reshape the political landscape of Westeros—and set in motion the events that would lead to the most devastating betrayal in the War of Five Kings.

Robb Stark had married Jeyne Westerling.

"You magnificent, honorable fool," I thought, my hands stilling on the bucket of water I'd been carrying. "You've just signed your own death warrant."

[Critical Intelligence: Robb Stark marriage confirmed]

[Political Consequence: Frey alliance dissolved]

[Timeline Status: Red Wedding sequence initiated]

[Strategic Assessment: Catastrophic failure imminent]

The news spread through the castle like wildfire, carried by servants who understood political implications better than most lords. Within hours, everyone knew that the Young Wolf had broken his betrothal to a Frey daughter for love, honor, and the kind of noble stupidity that got kings killed.

But what most people didn't understand was how quickly the consequences would follow.

I'd spent weeks establishing myself as a reliable servant, the kind of unremarkable presence that nobles forgot existed even when he was standing in their chambers. That invisibility had given me access to intelligence that painted a terrifying picture of what was coming.

Lord Walder Frey was not a man who forgave insults. Lord Roose Bolton was not a man who bet on losing sides. And somewhere in the twisted politics of the Riverlands, those two facts were about to converge in a way that would drench the North in blood.

The invitation would come soon. A wedding at the Twins, a gesture of reconciliation, a trap disguised as celebration.

[Fixed Point Analysis: Red Wedding probability approaching 100%]

[Intervention Capacity: Limited to damage mitigation]

[Primary Objective: Maximize survivor count]

[Secondary Objective: Preserve key bloodlines]

I made my way through the castle's corridors with practiced invisibility, heading for the one place where I might gather crucial intelligence about the developing conspiracy. Lord Bolton's chambers were heavily guarded, but they were also serviced by a network of servants who needed to clean, deliver meals, and maintain the space.

Servants who were part of the background until someone needed them.

The opportunity came during the midday meal service, when Bolton was meeting with his chief lieutenants to discuss the ongoing war situation. I entered his chambers carrying a tray of wine and refreshments, moving with the unremarkable efficiency that marked good service.

"—Frey's response will be swift," Roose was saying, his pale eyes fixed on a map of the Riverlands. "Walder doesn't forgive insults, and this marriage represents the gravest possible offense to his house."

"Will he withdraw from the war entirely?" asked one of his captains.

"Worse. He'll seek active revenge." Bolton's smile was winter-thin. "The old man has been nursing grievances against the Starks for decades. This gives him justification for actions he's been contemplating since the war began."

I set down the wine with careful precision, ears straining to catch every word. This was intelligence that could save lives—if I could figure out how to use it.

"And our position?" another officer inquired.

"Flexible." Bolton's tone made it clear that loyalty was a luxury he couldn't afford. "We serve the North's interests, but we must be realistic about the North's prospects. Robb Stark's marriage may have been personally honorable, but it was politically catastrophic."

[Conspiracy Confirmation: Bolton planning strategic betrayal]

[Frey Alliance: Active collaboration against Stark interests]

[Timeline Estimate: 2-3 months until decisive action]

I finished my service and began withdrawing, but Bolton's voice stopped me.

"Tom."

My throat went dry, but I turned with the patient attention of a good servant. "Yes, my lord?"

"You worked the docks in King's Landing before coming here. You understand trade, cargo, logistics."

"Some, my lord."

"If you were moving a large number of men and supplies through hostile territory, what would be your primary concern?"

The question was a test, and the wrong answer could be my last. But the right answer might give me insight into his planning.

"Supply lines, my lord. Moving that many people requires massive amounts of food, weapons, and shelter. Easy to track, easier to disrupt."

"Indeed. And if you wanted to eliminate such a force without direct confrontation?"

"He's thinking about the Red Wedding logistics," I realized. "How to massacre a wedding party without leaving evidence of premeditation."

"Cut the supply lines first, my lord. Force them into a position where they're dependent on your hospitality. Then you control every aspect of their situation."

Bolton's pale eyes studied me with uncomfortable intensity. "Wise observation. You may go."

[Strategic Intelligence: Red Wedding methodology confirmed]

[Tactic: Isolation and dependency creation]

[Vulnerability Window: Travel to Twins, wedding ceremony period]

[Counter-Strategy: Pre-positioned resources and escape routes]

That evening, as the castle settled into its nightly routine, I made my way to the rookery for my most dangerous infiltration yet. Bolton's correspondence would contain the specific details I needed—dates, numbers, planned deceptions.

The rookery was guarded, but guards had predictable patterns and human weaknesses. A carefully timed distraction in the courtyard below drew their attention long enough for me to slip through a window that should have been impossible to reach.

Enhanced reflexes made the climb effortless, and the ravens barely stirred as I searched through the collection of messages awaiting dispatch.

What I found made my blood freeze.

[Document Analysis: Frey Correspondence Discovered]

[Content: Wedding invitation framework]

[Date: Edmure Tully marriage ceremony at the Twins]

[Subtext: Robb Stark reconciliation attendance expected]

[Hidden Meaning: Trap deployment confirmed]

The letters were written in code, but the meaning was clear to anyone who understood the political situation. Walder Frey was planning his granddaughter's wedding to Edmure Tully as the perfect venue for settling scores with the Starks. Robb would attend as a gesture of reconciliation, bringing his closest allies and most trusted commanders.

And none of them would leave alive.

But buried in the correspondence was something even more chilling—a list of specific names marked for elimination. Not just Robb, but his mother, his wife, his key supporters. A systematic purge designed to decapitate the Northern resistance in a single night.

"Catelyn Stark. Jeyne Westerling. Dacey Mormont. Smalljon Umber."

The names burned themselves into my memory. These were the people I had to save, somehow, without preventing the Red Wedding itself.

[Target List: Priority survival candidates identified]

[Catelyn Stark: Requires alternate survival strategy]

[Jeyne Westerling: Pregnancy status unknown but critical]

[Military Leaders: Key to post-Red Wedding Northern resistance]

I was copying the most crucial information when footsteps echoed in the tower below. Multiple people, moving with purpose, heading directly for the rookery.

"Shit. Security sweep."

I had perhaps thirty seconds before discovery, not enough time to exit the way I'd entered. The only option was concealment among the ravens themselves, pressing into the shadows and hoping enhanced reflexes would keep me motionless enough to avoid detection.

The door opened to reveal Roose Bolton himself, accompanied by two guards and a maester I didn't recognize. They moved through the rookery with professional efficiency, checking messages and examining the security arrangements.

"Double the guard on all correspondence," Bolton commanded. "Recent intelligence suggests enemy infiltration attempts. Nothing leaves or enters without my personal review."

"He knows someone's been reading his mail." The net was tightening around anyone who showed unusual interest in strategic intelligence.

But as they prepared to leave, Bolton paused near my hiding place. For a moment, those pale eyes seemed to look directly at me, and I held my breath with the desperation of a drowning man.

"Interesting," he murmured. "Ravens are normally quite agitated by human presence. Yet tonight they seem... unusually calm."

He knew. Maybe not specifically, but he knew something was wrong with the situation. The question was whether he'd act on that knowledge immediately or file it away for future investigation.

After what felt like hours but was probably minutes, they departed. I waited until their footsteps faded completely before moving, slipping out of the rookery like smoke dispersing in wind.

[Intelligence Gathering: Critical information obtained]

[Security Status: Significantly compromised]

[Operational Window: Rapidly closing]

[Next Priority: Red Wedding damage mitigation planning]

Back in the servant quarters, I lay on my straw pallet and stared at the ceiling, my mind racing through the implications of what I'd learned. The Red Wedding was coming, and it would be every bit as devastating as I remembered from the show.

But unlike the show, I had advance warning. I knew the guest list, the methodology, and most importantly, the specific people who needed to survive if the North was going to have any chance of recovering from the coming disaster.

The system's cheerful notification materialized in my peripheral vision, glowing with the kind of fake enthusiasm that made me want to punch something.

[Major Quest Update: "The Red Wedding"]

[Status: Fixed Point in Time - Cannot be prevented]

[Objective: Minimize casualties among key personnel]

[Success Condition: Preserve Northern bloodlines and leadership]

[Failure Consequence: Complete Northern political collapse]

[Time Limit: Estimated 6-8 weeks until event]

[Special Condition: Intervention must remain undetectable]

"A fixed point in time. Of course it is."

Some events were so central to the timeline that preventing them would cause more damage than allowing them to occur. The Red Wedding was apparently one of those events—too important to the larger pattern of history to be altered without catastrophic consequences.

But that didn't mean I had to let everyone die.

[Strategic Planning: Phase One Initiated]

[Objective: Pre-position survival resources]

[Method: Hidden caches and escape routes at the Twins]

[Target Beneficiaries: Catelyn Stark, Jeyne Westerling, key military leaders]

[Cover Story: Trade route establishment and merchant negotiations]

I closed my eyes and began planning. The next two months would be the most dangerous of my new life, requiring infiltration of the Twins, manipulation of multiple factions, and the kind of precise timing that left no room for error.

But if I could save even half the people on my list, it would be worth the risk.

The Red Wedding was coming, and I couldn't stop it.

But I could make sure that some wolves survived the slaughter.

[Mission Parameters: Established]

[Primary Objective: Catelyn Stark survival]

[Secondary Objective: Northern leadership preservation]

[Method: Unknown - requires field assessment]

[Timeline: Critical preparation phase initiated]

Winter was coming for everyone, but especially for the Young Wolf and his pack.

Time to make sure that when the killing started, the right people lived to fight another day.
