Ruby's POV
"That sounds wonderful." My tone carried no warmth.
His expression darkened as he studied my face. "You seem less than thrilled."
I lifted one shoulder in response.
What he failed to grasp was how completely meaningless his offer had become.
Had he extended this support when I first approached him at that nightclub with my desperate proposal, he might have been my hero.
Instead, he had ridiculed me, declared me unworthy of his attention or effort.
Now his words felt hollow. I doubted he would ever truly defend me against his own blood.
"Kate crossed every line," he murmured, voice dropping low. "Barging into that board meeting to embarrass you publicly was unacceptable. Throwing you out of your position was worse. I plan to correct both mistakes when we return."
A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "Interesting. That contradicts your earlier stance completely. You wanted to ship me off to some distant branch office."
