Ash's infiltration plan had worked; his disguise got him into the Celadon Gym. Unfortunately, his cover was blown… by none other than Pikachu. So, with nothing left to hide, Ash came clean—he wanted to battle Erika fair and square. Amused that someone would go to such lengths just for a Gym Battle, Erika decided to grant his wish. The battle began. Erika's Gloom forced Ash into a tight spot—until Team Rocket made their usual "grand entrance." Their real goal this time?
The "Legendary Perfume" said to be stored in Celadon Gym. They'd already stolen it, and Jessie, furious about the giant red X that had been stamped on her face, decided to take revenge. She loved her "precious face" more than life itself—there was no way she was letting that humiliation slide. So, not content with theft, the trio also set bombs throughout the Gym. Unfortunately for them, their "grand stage" just happened to be sitting right on top of one. Before their catchphrase was even half-spoken—BOOM!
They were sent blasting off before the motto was done. The Gym was left in flames. Ash, guilt-ridden for being tricked by them, rushed back inside when he learned Gloom was still trapped inside. Braving the inferno, he carried the terrified Pokémon out to safety. Afterward, Erika didn't scold him—she knew he'd only been deceived. Instead, she smiled gently and handed him the Rainbow Badge. Thus, Ash earned his fifth Gym Badge.
[Lance: So Team Rocket's trio really are villains after all—not secret agents or anything?]
[Diantha: Shock of the century. This might actually be the first time they did something truly evil!]
[Flint (Brock's Father): And they didn't just do something evil—they blew up an entire Gym! If not for Ash, that Gloom would've been toast before the fire got put out!]
[Erika: The repairs took ages. The Gym was closed for weeks afterward.]
[Lorelei: Poetic justice, I'd say. Their own bombs sent them flying.]
[Cynthia: So that's why Erika and Sabrina both gave Ash their badges—makes sense now. To be fair, he earned both of them.] One badge for saving a Gym and a Pokémon from certain death—and another for freeing Sabrina from her psychic isolation. Yes, they were "given," but no one could deny he deserved them.

Later, he met Brock's idol—a breeder named Suzy—who entrusted her beloved Vulpix to Brock before departing on her own journey.
Then came a milestone moment—Ash entered the P1 Grand Prix, a Pokémon martial arts tournament. He emerged victorious… and, in a baffling decision, entrusted his Primeape to the runner-up for "further training."
Afterward, he caught a Muk and saved a city from a power plant crisis. Finally, after a few detours, the group reached Fuchsia Gym. And there, everyone watching finally understood just how much Koga had "held back." A Venomoth that had just evolved, and a Golbat that could barely stand up to a real battle— This wasn't just "taking it easy." This was beginner mode. Ash's Charizard—no, Charmander at the time—breezed through it, earning him the Soul Badge.
As the white screen faded to black, the live chat was suddenly overflowing— But not with jokes about Koga's mercy.
Instead—everyone was asking the same question: Why, Ash? Why did you give away your Primeape?!
