Chapter 56 - Fossils, Flames, and a Future for Charizard

In the white-screen world—

After making it through the blizzard route, Ash and his friends ran into another Eevee

and even took part in an "Evolution Party."

Not long after, they encountered a sleeping Snorlax and two so-called "gyms" that weren't actually recognized by the Pokémon League—

unofficial "wild gyms," run by small-time Trainers who just wanted to play Gym Leader.

With Ash's help, the two unlicensed Gym Leaders eventually realized their mistakes

and decided to disband their fake gyms and start over from scratch as proper Trainers.

Then came a truly pivotal moment…

Ash and his friends met a circus magician whose act wasn't attracting any audience.

Of course, busybodies that they were, Ash and the others immediately stayed behind to help.

But things went sideways when Ash was hypnotized by magician Melvin's Exeggcute,

and under hypnosis, he helped Melvin round up a massive herd of Exeggutor.

Because of Team Rocket's interference, the rampaging Exeggutor ended up marching straight toward the city!

Once Ash snapped out of the hypnosis, he sent out Charmander,

and together with Melvin, he helped subdue the out-of-control Exeggutor.

After defeating so many Exeggutor, Charmander shone with the light of evolution—

and successfully evolved into Charmeleon!

But… once Charmeleon evolved, its rebellious stage truly began.

After that, Ash and the others went through the whole Paras/Parasect incident,

and the infamous Jigglypuff singing incident.

Immediately afterward, they arrived at Grampa Canyon.

There, they ran into Gary.

According to Gary, this place was rumored to be full of ancient fossils.

Everyone was busy digging, dreaming of striking it rich with rare fossil Pokémon.

Naturally, in a place like this, Team Rocket was bound to show up.

Their plan was more ambitious than everyone else's:

they wanted to blow up the entire canyon in one go,

so they wouldn't have to dig up fossils bit by bit.

Of course, those three blockheads didn't think it through—

if they blew everything up, the fossils might be destroyed too!

Team Rocket's scheme was discovered by Ash;

after a heated confrontation, their explosives were accidentally detonated.

Both Team Rocket and Ash's group were sent crashing down into the underground caverns beneath the canyon.

Down there, they came face-to-face with legendary extinct fossil Pokémon.

But none of the Pokémon they had on hand were any match for the ancient Pokémon living there.

Then the true overlord of the cavern appeared—

the fossil pterosaur Pokémon, Aerodactyl!

Aerodactyl grabbed Ash and burst out of the cave, soaring into the sky

and taunting Charmeleon from above.

Enraged, Charmeleon roared and was suddenly engulfed in light.

Right then and there, it evolved into Charizard!

With a little "help" from Jigglypuff's performance,

Charizard managed to rescue Ash,

and all the fossil Pokémon were lulled back into a deep sleep by Jigglypuff's song,

returning to the slumber they were meant to have.

Because Jigglypuff's lullaby made everyone think they had simply "dreamed" of seeing fossil Pokémon,

Ash's incredible experience in Grampa Canyon was later dismissed as nothing more than a strange dream by many witnesses.

When Ash and his friends finally left Grampa Canyon,

they took with them a single Pokémon Egg.

[Lance: There are so many fossil Pokémon under Grampa Canyon… I've already asked the League to send people to guard the site and had it designated a key protected area.]

[Lance: I hope everyone understands—if people from all over the world rush there, Grampa Canyon will be ruined, and those fossil Pokémon will never know peace again.]

After seeing the situation in Grampa Canyon through the live feed, Lance immediately contacted League HQ

and had a team stationed there.

It wasn't just to prevent poachers—but also to stop over-excited Trainers,

who, upon learning about the fossil Pokémon, might charge straight in to dig and catch whatever they could.

That would be a disaster for both the canyon and the ancient Pokémon sleeping below.

Since they hadn't been caught when they first appeared,

it was better to let them continue sleeping undisturbed.

[Gary: So it wasn't just a dream after all… what a shame I didn't manage to catch even one fossil Pokémon there. Meanwhile, Ash walks off with a mysterious egg…]

[Blaine: No wonder Ash's Charizard is so small. Aside from its earlier lack of proper training, it also forced its evolution midway like that… A Charizard that evolves under such strain…]

[Flint: Generally speaking, a Charizard with that kind of "consumed potential" has a hard time ever reaching its absolute peak.]

Flint spoke bluntly.

As a Fire-type expert, he knew Charizard—and Fire-types in general—inside and out.

Pokémon had infinite potential, yes,

but Charizard had already burned through a lot of its own—twice.

No matter how much potential it still had,

it was now starting from far behind the ideal starting line.

[Blaine: I don't mean to discourage you, Ash, but your Charizard… it's going to be very difficult for it to grow stronger. Sending it to a place as harsh as Charicific Valley, just to chase some faint, far-off possibility… that's basically putting it through torture.]

As a half-researcher himself, Blaine was torn.

Emotionally, he didn't want to say such harsh things to Ash.

But from a rational standpoint, it was the truth as he saw it.

[Leon: I can't agree with that, Mr. Blaine. I remember you saying you're a researcher. In that case, shouldn't you be even more aware of how much untapped possibility lies within Pokémon?]

[Leon: Take Black World Ash's Pikachu, for example. How many Pikachu in the world can reach that level? It even created its own move to draw in the power of the heavens and earth!]

[Leon: The bond between humans and Pokémon is the most miraculous thing there is. It's because both White World Ash and Black World Ash have that bond engraved in their very bones that their lives are being called legendary in this livestream.]

[Ash: I'll say it again—I believe in my Charizard. And it's not just because I now have access to an ancient Charizard training method. Even without it, I believe Charizard will become the world's greatest Charizard!]

[Blaine: …Then I'll wait and see.]

After thinking about it, Blaine decided to say no more.

He would let the images speak for themselves.

Unless a miracle happened, he still didn't hold much hope.

Reality had rules, after all—

being "drained" once was barely manageable,

but being drained twice… at that point, you'd practically need Arceus itself to come down and save you.

Leon and Ash's words made sense, but Blaine still didn't think his own were wrong.

In the white-screen world—

After their adventure in Grampa Canyon,

Ash and his friends got caught up in James's runaway wedding fiasco.

Meanwhile, the egg Ash had brought from the canyon finally hatched.

From it came a small Pokémon called Togepi,

a species said in legends to bring good luck to its Trainer.

Later, they arrived at a mysterious garden known as Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden,

a secret place where the Bulbasaur line held their Evolution Festival.

The whole event was a celebration of evolution—

but Ash's Bulbasaur refused to evolve.

The Venusaur presiding over the ceremony regarded Ash's unevolving Bulbasaur as an outlier

and tried to "teach it a lesson."

At the critical moment, Team Rocket once again "helpfully" showed up.

They kidnapped all of the Ivysaur,

and in the chaos, Bulbasaur was forced to grow stronger—

even learning a brand-new move, SolarBeam.

In the end, Bulbasaur saved the Ivysaur,

and was finally acknowledged by Venusaur itself.

[Erika: So Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden really exists…! And it's actually the place where Bulbasaur gather for an evolution festival! Even just watching it through the footage, I was completely shocked.]

[Ramos: To think there's such a mysterious place in Kanto! It's like a paradise for Grass-type Pokémon.]

[Professor Oak: But it's still more of a legend than a fixed location. Its opening time and entrance are unknown. Even now that we've seen it in these images, it's nearly impossible to actively search for it.]

After all, in the footage, Ash had been led there by a mysterious Bulbasaur.

Without that, no one could even find the path in.

In the white-screen world—

Ash and his friends went through a series of other events,

met the photographer Todd,

and exposed the conspiracy of Butch and Cassidy.

At long last, they arrived at the Cinnabar Gym.

Gym Leader Blaine was a riddle lover,

and only after solving his riddles was Ash allowed to challenge the Gym.

And then came the eternal meme—

Why is Pikachu called a "god"?

Because it defeated a Rhydon with an Electric-type move.

Sure, it was because the electricity traveled along Rhydon's horn…

But viewers couldn't help questioning:

"Wait, aren't Rhydon supposed to be immune to Electric moves?

All that training, and your 'weakness' is just the horn?

Even if the electricity hit the horn, should that really be a one-hit KO?!"

In the end, Pikachu still lost the match.

Charizard refused to battle,

and the challenge ended in Ash's defeat.

Later, when Ash was in serious danger,

Team Rocket hilariously came in clutch and actually helped him.

After Ash defeated Team Rocket and helped halt the rising magma,

he and Blaine had their rematch.

This time, Charizard's fighting spirit was ignited—

it agreed to listen to Ash's commands just this once.

Ash did not waste that trust.

Under his orders, Charizard performed a spectacular Seismic Toss,

defeating Blaine's Magmar.

With that, Ash earned his seventh badge: the Volcano Badge.

[Bruno: Ash's journey between his sixth and seventh Gym badges is really something… There are so many major events in just that stretch alone.]

[Misty: Yeah… and no one really knows how much hardship we went through back then. At least now, everyone can see for themselves.]

[Brock: We almost got handed the Volcano Badge that first time. Ash absolutely refused to accept it as charity back then, though.]

[Ash: Can we not bring up my black history again, please?! It's the other me's turn now! I wonder if his Charizard listens to him.]

[Liza: Uh… shouldn't you already have a pretty good idea of the answer to that?]

On Black World Ash's side, Charizard had listened to him since its Charmeleon days,

let alone after fully evolving into Charizard.

Unlike White World Ash's slow and rocky growth,

Black World Ash had debuted as a nearly fully formed, mature Trainer.

As everyone chatted, the dark screen began to glow once more.

In the dark-screen world—

After leaving the Fuchsia Gym,

Ash and his friends also took part in the Pokémon race.

However, this time the details were a bit different.

One contestant riding a Dodrio tried to cheat and sabotage Ash,

who was riding a Ponyta.

But Ash sensed the trick instantly with his Aura,

and dodged every dirty move.

In the end, Ponyta evolved into Rapidash upon winning the race,

and the cheating rider, still fuming, tried to pick a fight with Ash.

He was swiftly sent flying by Pikachu's Iron Tail.

After that, Ash and his group arrived at the Safari Zone

and heard the legend of the Dratini living there.

Inside the Ranger's hut, Ash pointed at an old photo of Kaiser standing with a Dratini.

"Mr. Kaiser, isn't this a Dratini?" he asked.

"That is not a Dratini! I told you, there are no Dratini here!"

Kaiser panicked, slapped a hand over the photo, and then pulled out a pistol to threaten Ash.

Ash frowned. His arm flicked slightly—

and the pistol flew neatly into his own hand.

"Mr. Kaiser, it's a really bad habit to point guns at people. What if it actually went off?"

With that, Ash calmly tucked the gun back into Kaiser's belt,

leaving the man stunned,

and then motioned for Brock, Misty, and Pikachu to follow him into the Safari Zone.

Of course Ash knew there was a Dratini here,

but since Kaiser didn't want to talk about it,

he didn't press further.

As soon as they entered the park, Ash ran into a Tauros that immediately caught his eye.

He stared at it for a moment.

Its physique and presence felt far beyond the standard Tauros data he had in his head.

This had to be a "King" Tauros.

Battling with Pokémon was forbidden in the Safari Zone,

but Ash had come prepared.

He took out some high-grade Pokémon rations,

then used his Aura to gently calm the Tauros,

and finally, with smooth timing, he caught it in a Safari Ball.

[Misty: See? Just look at Black World Ash—he actually prepares before catching a Pokémon. Calm it with Aura, feed it, then catch it when it's relaxed. Ash, what about you? You just wildly threw Safari Balls everywhere until you ended up with thirty Tauros!]

[Ash: Hey, I did my best too, okay! And look at the result—he still caught Tauros as well! How is that any different from me?!]

[Ash: The real question is whether all the other Pokémon he catches there also end up being Tauros!]

Ash felt he definitely had some strange karmic connection with Tauros.

Otherwise, how could every Safari Ball he threw hit a Tauros, of all things?

If that was true, then surely his other-world self would end up in the same situation—

eight times out of ten… or even ten out of ten!

In the dark-screen world—

After catching that Tauros, Ash wandered around the Safari Zone for quite a while

and still didn't see any other Pokémon he truly wanted to catch.

He wasn't the type to throw Poké Balls at anything that moved.

Of course, just because he wasn't catching anything didn't mean Brock and Misty couldn't.

In the end, Brock caught a Tauros of his own,

and Misty successfully caught a Tentacool,

one of her favorite Water-type Pokémon.

She'd never expected to meet a Tentacool in the Safari Zone,

and it was largely thanks to Ash's help.

The Pokémon in the Safari Zone had no fixed locations,

so finding just the right "partner" was usually very difficult.

But with Ash's Aura sensing ability,

locating specific Pokémon became much easier.

Once everyone had caught at least one Pokémon they truly liked,

they didn't feel the need to use up all their Safari Balls.

They decided to leave the Safari Zone.

By now, Brock and Misty had been influenced by Ash's philosophy:

If you like a Pokémon, treat it sincerely.

If you don't truly love it, don't catch it just to fill a slot.

If they caught a Pokémon every time they saw one,

would they really have time and energy to train them all properly?

That would be far too difficult.

Just as they were about to leave, Kaiser came stumbling toward them.

He looked ridiculous, tied up in some kind of tickle-torture machine.

Pikachu quickly freed him with a well-aimed Iron Tail.

Kaiser then explained the whole situation.

Apparently, Team Rocket had somehow learned about the Dratini,

and had forced Kaiser to reveal its location.

By now, Team Rocket was already headed to Dragon Valley.

Ash, Brock, Misty, and Kaiser rushed there together,

arriving just in time to see Team Rocket tossing a bomb into the lake at the heart of Dragon Valley.

"You three… really are everywhere, huh."

"Pikachu—Thunderbolt!"

Ash didn't even bother with a lengthy speech.

He had Pikachu launch a Thunderbolt immediately,

blasting Team Rocket off on the spot for their trouble.

Then, without another word, Ash flipped his cap backwards and dove straight into the lake.

Team Rocket's bomb was still underwater.

He had to retrieve it, no matter what.

PS (Author's Note):

The blizzard scene in the previous chapter corresponds to episode 64 of the original anime.

In that episode, it takes place roughly between meeting Eevee and arriving at Pikachu Forest,

so I slotted it in there.

I wrote that part a bit longer because I really love that scene.

Ash enduring the blizzard for everyone,

and everyone in turn using their bodies to shield and warm Ash—

it's honestly one of the most touching moments in the series.

If you're curious and haven't seen it in a while,

you can rewatch episode 64 for the full impact.

As for the stretch between Fuchsia and Cinnabar in the original,

a lot of the "unit episodes" are pretty odd or filler-like,

so I've trimmed some of the less important ones here.

That'll be the general approach going forward:

self-contained episodes with no new captures and no real plot progression

will mostly be skipped or summarized briefly.

As always, if there's a particular Pokémon you'd like to see Ash encounter and catch on the road,

feel free to leave a note.

PS :

Pikachu – Ace. Holds Light Ball + Star Meteor Iron weights (very heavy).
