Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Them and us

Human beings lived lives of one negating moral right and fighting for another.

But now that they had left their planet, would that still be the case?

"Braham Folis!"

A man sleeping on his desk suddenly woke up as his name was called.

"Yes, Professor!" he cried.

Others looked toward the man, their eyes mocking and their lips curled up to the brim.

The man he addressed as Professor glared at him.

The Professor spoke again, "If you don't want to attend the class, you don't need to come."

Braham, his voice quivering, replied, "No, Professor."

"No? What?!"

"I want to attend the class, Professor."

The Professor sighed and began, "Alright, tell me the reason why humans went extinct on Earth."

Braham tried to scramble an answer through his brain as he spoke, "Because of overpopulation, Professor."

The laughter around him grew louder.

A voice mocked him from the other side, "Overpopulation of Folis."

The Professor turned toward the one who disturbed his class. "Peter, then you tell me—what was the reason?"

Peter, startled by the sudden question, stumbled as he stood up to answer. "War, Professor."

The Professor cleared his throat and told both Peter and Braham to take their seats again.

"You'd better not sleep in my class," he said, looking toward Braham.

He continued as he addressed the class again, "Violence was precisely the reason for their downfall. The species once reigned supreme for their violent tendencies; ultimately, it was overwhelming for them and became the sole reason for their demise."

After that, he continued his classes without disturbance. Both Peter and Braham remained silent throughout.

When the class ended, Braham looked up at the sky. A stark white light spread across the entire academy, casting everything in a pale glow.

It was the first day of class. Unlike the others, he had only recently been adopted into a family—one of the few that allowed an Anthroid to pursue higher education.

He remembered the lessons he had received when his eyes first awakened.

He whispered them quietly to himself as he walked toward the library.

"Long ago, the Celestials replicated species of many kinds from a universe known only to them. Among them was a being called Homo sapiens. Their descendants were studied, observed, and I am one of those replicas."

"The Celestials do not believe in free will, unlike the humans they imitated, and for that, they despise us. Yet, as we were made by them, we are bound to follow them to the end. For in their design lies the only purpose of our creation."
