Chapter 88 - After the Break

"Doors," Dmitri said as soon as they were inside.

Marcus slammed his shut. "Go."

The car pulled out hard, then smoothed almost immediately.

"Head down," Dmitri added. "Both of you."

Aria leaned forward just enough to see past Marcus. "That was close."

"Too close," Marcus said. His voice was steady, but his breathing wasn't.

A few seconds passed.

"Everyone breathing?" Dmitri asked.

"Yes," Aria said. "Still here."

"Good."

Another stretch of silence, broken only by the engine and the click of a turn signal.

Marcus finally shifted in his seat. "You didn't miss the turn."

"No," Dmitri said. "The car was where Viktor said it'd be."

"Good," Marcus replied, like he needed to hear it out loud.

Viktor's voice came in quietly. "I stayed off the open channels."

"Smart," Marcus said.

Dmitri checked the mirror, then rechecked it.

"Did anyone get made?"

Dmitri didn't look back as he spoke, his eyes flicking between the rearview mirror and the dark streets ahead.
