Chapter 74 - Zero (22)

The hospital was the foundation. A kind of altar that drew up the ley lines directly.

Morgan spent six months with him, exchanging bodily fluids whenever she had the chance.

The truth behind this act, done under the pretext of supplying magical energy, was a ritual.

By exchanging fluids filled with magical energy at the altar that was the hospital, she continuously poured his and her own magical energy into the altar.

The ritual, supplied with sufficient magical energy, was completed the night before,

and as a result, Morgan had constructed a pseudo-Holy Grail.

Morgan's unique Grail, modeled after Fuyuki's Greater Grail and Lesser Grail...

was none other than Kyle.

How is this possible?

This began when Morgan cast off her form as Tonelico and stole Kyle's Command Spells.

By seizing the qualification of Master from him, she simultaneously deceived the Grail and reversed the relationship between Servant and Master.

Morgan was both Servant and Master. Kyle became Morgan's Servant.

The Grail was bewildered.

From the Grail's perspective, Kyle was a Heroic Spirit of unknown origin. This suddenly born Irregular destroyed the fundamental rules of the Holy Grail War. It was committing a grave error.

Originally, a Servant must be summoned from the Throne of Heroes, but as a Beast that repeats reincarnation, Kyle could not be registered on the Throne.

For him to be registered on the Throne of Heroes would mean he had seen the end of his reincarnations. The end of reincarnation conflicts with one of the Beast's traits: to be eternally reborn.

So where did this Servant come from? Morgan injected a new 'truth' into the Grail.

[This Servant is registered on the Throne of Heroes]

Whether it was true or not, Morgan imprinted this fact onto the Grail.

Therefore, although the Beast is not actually registered on the Throne of Heroes, for the purpose of the Holy Grail War taking place here in Fuyuki City, he became a Servant that existed.

Since the Fuyuki Grail perceived it as such, there was no problem.

The Grail acknowledged Kyle as a Servant. Thus, she passed the first hurdle.

The second hurdle was the Grail's natural duty: providing backup for the Servant.

Servants are heroes of the past. No matter how skilled a magus, reviving them and handling them as familiars is an immense strain.

If it were that easy, the world would be controlled by the hands of magi who command Servants.

What makes this possible is the Grail's backup.

The Grail supplies most of the magical energy needed to command a Heroic Spirit, with the rest passed on to the Master, allowing the Heroic Spirit to manifest.

This is why even a magus who is close to being an ordinary person can participate in the Holy Grail War.

Naturally, the Grail had to supply magical energy to Kyle. But... how much should it supply?

Kyle was, in the first place, a physical human being.

Even with his essence as a Beast, he didn't need even 1% of the Grail's backup to live. He was not a spiritual body.

There was naturally no need to supply him with magical energy, but Morgan deceived the Grail once again.

[For Kyle to manifest as a Servant, a backup of magical energy dozens of times greater than that of other Servants is required]

As long as Kyle was in Fuyuki City, he would receive a vast amount of magical energy support without doing anything.

The immense amount of magical energy the Grail had steadily accumulated for its ritual over 60 years began to flow into Kyle.

Due to the Grail's nature of granting wishes through vast magical energy, Kyle had become another false Holy Grail.

A parasite of the Holy Grail, so to speak.

In this way, Morgan modified the Greater Grail's formula to her liking.

This was precisely why Morgan couldn't show herself before Kyle after the Holy Grail War began.

She was too busy.

After analyzing the structure of the Grail, which had been maintained for hundreds of years, she secretly modified it so that no one would notice.

She stole the sword from Gilgamesh.

She seduced Kyle as he was making cotton candy, and pleaded with him to join her in her dream.

All these numerous tasks, Morgan thankfully managed to accomplish in just three days. It would not be an exaggeration to call her a god of magecraft.

Realistically speaking, Morgan's abilities, honed over 6,000 years, were astounding.

Romantically speaking, it was the power of love.

Although Kyle ultimately rejected Morgan's proposal... Morgan had no intention of giving up.

It was now a matter of pride.

She would perfectly protect Kyle and defeat all other participants to win the Holy Grail War.

She couldn't return to the Fairy Kingdom empty-handed, could she?

The final, third hurdle was not dying.

Kyle's death would mean Morgan's failure.

Morgan had already once had to watch Kyle die right before her eyes. She swore on Britain that she would never make the same mistake again.

Morgan steadily took the necessary steps.

Through the Grail's near-infinite magical energy backup, Kyle successfully obtained a body close to immortality.

It was very reassuring. She simply couldn't imagine a scenario where she or Kyle would lose to other Servants.

Morgan naturally didn't consider the possibility of her own defeat, so that was excluded.

Archer wouldn't be able to kill Kyle no matter what, and the remaining Heroic Spirits could eventually be defeated by Kyle, who possessed infinite magical energy.

However, Saber—Artoria Pendragon's holy sword was an obstacle that even Morgan could not be complacent about.

Even with the Grail's backup, Kyle could not defeat the holy sword.

The matchup was the worst possible. If the holy sword incinerated the Beast's entire body, how could he possibly regenerate?

It might be a different story if he were to fully fledge as a Beast...

But if that happened, the Grail would notice something was wrong, and a Guardian of the Counter Force would soon arrive, making everything she had done a waste.

Thus, Morgan felt the necessity for her own survival.

She had to stay by his side to protect him from death. This was consistent with Morgan's initial objective.

She wouldn't lose in a one-on-one fight, so she devised a plan assuming other factions would attack together.

Depending on the circumstances, it could even be a 1-vs-6 situation. The power of the Beast that Kyle possessed was particularly dangerous, even in the Holy Grail War.

If all other factions were to attack together, the greatest enemy Morgan would have to face was Gilgamesh.

Morgan formulated a strategy with Gilgamesh in mind.

She frankly acknowledged Enuma Elish. She couldn't win against it. The slash that sunders the world could not be stopped.

A conceptual defense was necessary, but the current Morgan did not possess one.

It might be different in her home, the Fairy Kingdom, but summoned alone in Fuyuki City, she had no way to block Enuma Elish.

But Morgan had magical energy. The vast magical energy possessed by Kyle.

Couldn't she just give up her own flesh and bone, and similarly wear the opponent down to death?

She would endlessly produce clones, each possessing performance equal to Morgan's main body.

Would Gilgamesh's magical energy run out first? Or would Morgan's, backed by the Grail?

Morgan fought only after securing her victory.

The result of that was Gilgamesh's retreat.

"We're retreating, Saber. Kiritsugu says any more fighting is meaningless."

"…Understood."

On the ground, Saber's defeat.

"Tohsaka… So you cannot hold on. Tsk."

In the sky, Archer's defeat.

In a single night, the balance of the Holy Grail War collapsed.

The two Servants who vied for the title of the strongest were defeated by Caster and her Master, respectively.

Every faction participating in the Holy Grail War was shaken.

Although no Servant had been eliminated, everyone came to understand.

Archer had used his Noble Phantasm twice and still fled, and Saber had lost to a mere human.

The Caster faction was the strongest.

The realization that they had to defeat those two to win the Holy Grail War was hammered into everyone's minds. Without doing so, they could not claim the Grail.

The others began devising new strategies, but for the parties involved, it was not so simple.

The most bewildered were the Archer faction and the Holy Church, who had been certain of victory.

An unprecedented situation had occurred where Archer, Gilgamesh, had used his Noble Phantasm twice and still failed to win.

The Church, which had been supporting Tohsaka both materially and spiritually, was on the verge of losing its mind.

'After all our support, this is how they repay us, with a stab in the back?'

They had left them alone until now because they hadn't done anything, but if this was how things were going to be, the Church could not stand by and watch.

The Beast is unequivocal evil. An existence that cannot be overlooked.

Now, before it has fully fledged, is the perfect time. Along with the Holy Grail War, they would erase this shame of the Church.

Under the decision of the Holy Grail War's supervisor, Father Risei, the Caster Faction Subjugation began.

"To the one who eliminates Caster and her Master, two Command Spells shall be granted."

A chance to gain a whole two Command Spells.

There was no fool in the world who would just watch this opportunity pass by.

The site of the decisive battle would naturally be Caster's workshop, the hospital on the hill.

The execution date was set for the sixth day, after a two-day preparation period.

Every faction began preparing for the subjugation, aiming for the two Command Spells, and there was just one faction that was tense for a completely different reason.

A Caster faction subjugation? I just had a light spar with Saber who came to visit the hospital, and suddenly this huge incident has broken out.

"Things have gotten pretty dangerous... You did say in your letter that you wouldn't cause any trouble, didn't you...?"

I called Morgan. I had no choice but to call her.

We had separated because of... well, *that*, but with the situation like this, I had to ask.

Fortunately, Morgan was well aware of the gravity of the situation. She returned to the hospital immediately.

When I got straight to the point, Morgan hesitated, fiddling with her fingers and lowering her head.

"No, I'm not angry. I just want to ask. The pretext is the subjugation of the Beast, so it's probably my fault too for using my power outside the hospital. But the part in the subjugation order that says 'unauthorized modification of the Holy Grail' is something I've never heard of."

Morgan shrank back like a child who had caused one accident after another,

"…This isn't easy."

And I could only stare endlessly out the window.
