Two years. That's how long it had been since Elisabeth and I last crossed paths. I could tell she didn't want to dredge up anything painful when she pulled me aside, her voice soft with worry. "When did you make it back?"

"A little over a month now." I managed what I hoped passed for a smile.

But after two years of complete isolation, with all those brutal memories crashing back, my expression felt brittle and fake.

Elisabeth knew the whole Noah disaster inside and out, and I could see the sympathy in her eyes. She was still trying to make sense of it all—how Jill had gone from everyone's darling to someone people couldn't stand.

She paused, choosing her words carefully. "Word was you spent two years overseas. That true?"

The Noahs had spun that tale for Levi and anyone else who gave a damn about me—people like Elisabeth. I played along, giving her a nod.
