Emily paced just outside the hospital entrance, her phone clenched in her hand.
She checked the time again.
Still no Amelia.
Her brows furrowed. She should be here by now. Emily scanned the stream of passing faces, patients, nurses, families rushing in and out but Amelia was nowhere among them.
"Why aren't you picking up?" she muttered, dialing again.
The call rang.
And rang.
No answer.
A familiar knot formed in her chest.
Just as she lowered the phone, a man in a white coat approached. His expression was calm and professional, but urgency sharpened his eyes.
"Miss Emily?" he asked.
She looked up at once. "Yes?"
"I'm Dr. Harris. We're ready to proceed with Mrs. Zoe's surgery, but we need your consent signature."
