Hailey felt her own anger rising. Hot and sharp.
"And how about you?" she shot back. Her voice gained strength. "What am I to you? Victoria's stand-in?"
The words hung between them. Like a bomb about to detonate. Eric's face went completely blank with shock.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Eric asked. Genuine confusion replaced his anger.
"Don't play dumb," Hailey said. She took a step closer. "You know exactly what I'm talking about."
"I really don't," Eric insisted. His brow furrowed.
"Really?" Hailey asked. "You really don't remember?"
"Remember what?" Eric asked, exasperated.
Hailey took a deep breath. She steadied herself.
"On Christmas night," Hailey said. Her voice trembled slightly. "You hugged me from behind."
Eric's face started to change. Recognition dawned slowly.
"Oh no," Eric said quietly.
"And you called me Victoria," Hailey continued. She watched him closely.
