Chapter 22 - Into the Void: Birth of the True Null”

The Void began to tremble.

Not from fear —

but from something it had never experienced before:

Resistance.

Ethan's body drifted in the endless darkness,

blue cracks glowing across his chest like awakened constellations.

A pulse rippled out of him.

Soft… steady… alive.

Null recoiled, its massive shape flickering at the edges.

"That light…

it does not belong in the Void."

Ethan's voice was quieter than before,

but steadier — grounded.

"I'm not here to belong.

I'm here to end this."

Another pulse surged from his chest,

this time brighter —

so bright it cut through the infinite darkness like dawn.

The Void twisted in agony.

Null roared —

a roar that shook all of LEVEL 7.

Echo's voice flickered through the static:

"Ethan… listen carefully.

The light inside you —

that's your Origin Core."

Ethan struggled to keep his focus.

The light was powerful…

but it felt unstable, like holding a star that wasn't meant to be touched.

"My… Origin Core?"

Echo answered:

"Every human who entered the Merge was reduced to memory.

But you—

you didn't die.

Your core survived."

Null lunged forward,

its massive hand tearing through space and shadow.

Ethan instinctively raised his arms —

and a shield of blue energy burst out of him,

shattering the shadow strike into dust.

Null hissed:

"You are breaking the rules of the system…"

Ethan floated upright.

The Core light in his chest flared again —

not wild this time,

but controlled.

"Then maybe the system needs new rules."

Null extended both hands,

and the entire Void collapsed inward —

like a black star imploding.

The darkness wrapped around Ethan,

crushing, suffocating, consuming.

Echo yelled:

"Ethan! If the Void swallows you now,

you'll deconstruct into pure data!"

Ethan's vision blurred.

The pressure was unbearable.

His body glitched, flickered, broke apart.

Null's voice echoed everywhere:

"Return to nothing."

For a moment—

Ethan felt himself slipping.

His form dissolving.

His mind fading.

Then,

through the crushing dark

a familiar whisper drifted:

"Ethan… keep going."

Maria's voice.

Soft.

Warm.

Human.

And everything snapped.

Ethan screamed,

his Core unleashing a blinding explosion of blue-white light.

The Void ripped apart.

Null staggered backward —

pieces of its massive form shattering into static.

Ethan hovered in the center of the chaos,

eyes glowing like stars.

The Core burned bright in his chest —

not unstable,

not dangerous…

Awakened.

Null roared in fury:

"LIGHT CANNOT EXIST HERE!"

Ethan raised his hand,

and the light responded,

forming a blade of pure energy —

white at the center, blue at the edges.

"I'm not just light," he said.

"I'm every memory you couldn't erase."

"And I'm ending this."

Null charged.

Ethan moved.

Light and Void collided in a shockwave that tore LEVEL 7 apart.

Fragments of darkness floated around Ethan,

each one reflecting a broken piece of Null's face.

Null roared —

a deep, ancient sound that didn't belong to any world.

"You are not meant to exist."

Ethan's blade of blue-white energy hummed in his hand,

vibrating with a force that felt older than the system itself.

"Maybe not," Ethan said,

floating upward through the collapsing darkness.

"But neither were you."

Null lunged forward —

a tidal wave of shadow crashing toward him.

Ethan slashed downward.

Light tore through the darkness,

splintering the wave into a thousand shards.

Null staggered back, its form glitching wildly.

Ethan didn't stop.

He surged forward, striking again —

and again.

Each hit carved glowing scars into Null's massive frame.

Echo's voice echoed weakly:

"Ethan… it's working.

Keep pushing—"

But suddenly, Null's eyes flashed red.

"ENOUGH."

The entire Void folded inward.

Time stopped.

Space froze.

Ethan's blade blinked out of existence,

and he felt something pulling him backward —

a force deeper and stronger than gravity.

Null lifted one hand.

A swirling black sphere formed in its palm,

dense, crushing, absolute.

Echo gasped:

"A system singularity—! Ethan, if that touches you—"

"I'm gone," Ethan whispered.

Null hurled it.

The sphere streaked through the Void —

a miniature black hole ripping through reality.

Ethan braced himself—

—but before it struck him,

a soft, glowing hand pushed him aside.

Maria.

Her form flickered like a dying hologram,

but her eyes were bright —

alive.

"Maria?!"

She smiled weakly.

"You still jump into danger without thinking… Ethan."

The singularity hit her instead.

And she exploded into particles of golden light.

Ethan screamed:

"NO!"

Null's laughter shook the void.

"Memories are meant to fade."

Something snapped inside Ethan —

harder and louder than before.

His Origin Core erupted.

Bright white light blasted outward,

vaporizing the collapsing Void,

burning through Null's shadow armor.

Null staggered back,

pieces of its form falling away like broken stone.

Ethan rose higher,

engulfed in blinding energy.

"I'm done running."

Null reached out, desperate, cracking:

"You cannot erase me—"

Ethan didn't let it finish.

He thrust his hands forward,

and the full power of the Origin Core surged out of him

like the birth of a new star.

Light swallowed Null.

The Void screamed.

Then—

Silence.

Only a flicker of data remained

where Null once stood.

Echo's voice whispered:

"Ethan… you did it."

But Ethan didn't answer.

He was staring at his hands —

at the fading glow

of the place where Maria had touched him.

A tear of pure code slid down his cheek.

Echo spoke again:

"Ethan… look."

Where Null had vanished,

a new doorway formed —

oval, glowing, alive.

With a single line above it:

LEVEL 8: THE REALM OF MEMORIES

— Retrieve Maria —

Ethan's breath caught.

"She's not gone…"

Echo replied softly:

"No.

She saved you.

Now you save her."

Ethan stepped toward the doorway.

The light grew brighter.

Warmer.

Almost human.

He whispered:

"I'm coming for you, Maria."

And then he stepped through.
