Chapter 23 - Only Tonight
"Julie?" It was the first thing she heard when she stepped into the room. It was late at night and she hadn't expected that Rosabel would still be awake. "You are alive?"
Idalia closed the door quietly and firmly behind her. "Sorry to disappoint you." Her grip around Arik tightened.
There was no way she could mistakenly turn her back to Rosabel. They had left on a sour note and the sudden gentleness on her face was not about to make Idalia forget that.
"No I—" she paused. "Everyone regrouped. You were not there so I thought you were dead."
She sniffled and her face twisted as if she regretted that immediately after she had done it.
Idalia narrowed her eyes.
She could see it now. Under the small yellow bulb, she could see it.
The handkerchief. The puffy eyes.
Had Rosabel been crying? For her?
"I thought he killed Arik too. They made no mention of any baby or body. It wouldn't be the first time so—"
