Grace's expression shifted slightly. "Why?"
Obviously because I want to stay alive!
She wasn't about to risk everything for people who meant nothing to her.
But Grey kept pushing, so she met his gaze directly. "Because there's someone who matters to me more now!"
"What?" Grey's eyes widened in shock.
The rescue worker sat just feet away, but Grace ignored him completely. "Grey, you mean everything to me. I can't stand the thought of losing you. If you weren't on this helicopter, I'd charge straight ahead without thinking twice, no matter how deadly it got."
She pressed on, "But you're here with me, so I won't take that chance. Evelin's helicopter is already ahead of us. Let's wait and see what happens. If she can't pull off the rescue, I'll drop you somewhere safe first, then go myself."
Grey felt his chest constrict. "God, Grace, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have questioned you, I—"
"Forget it. Just don't ever doubt how much you mean to me," Grace said, her voice tender.
