Chapter 5 - The Black Sun Event

(Third Person POV)

The time had come.

At Midday, at exactly 12:00, the sun high above had suddenly turned black in color. The entire world was plunged into black and white. The Black Sun shone its rays down unto the earth, covering even the side of the globe that was night.

This phenomenon was the Black Sun Event. An yearly occurrence that caused everything everywhere to be black and white, no matter the location. Even indoors, where the sunrays didn't touch, there was nothing but black and white, a thin film of shadows covering every single inch of space.

Till this day, hundreds of years after the First Black Sun Event, nobody knows how this phenomenon causes the entire world to be plunged in this state. Some say that it is due to the Veil thinning completely, causing the Shadow Titans to roam the earth freely and visibly. But other theories state that the Titans are always roaming the earth, the Event causing humanity to briefly see them for 24 hours.

Nevertheless, Dystopian Texas and New Haven were no different. They, too, were plunged in this shadowy state. Everyone was still going about their business, and some people still looked up at the black sun that shone high above them. Because this was classified as a False Total Solar Eclipse, it is considered safe to look up at the Eclipse.

Everyone in New Haven, whether in the High Towers District or in the Outskirts, they were simply enjoying this yearly event, always in awe of the spectacle. Some hoped for a Shadow Titan sighting, believing that they could spot them passing by plains outside the city.

Inside the DBG's headquarters, however, the Event Coordination Team was working hard to start their planned Breach. In the sub-basement level, a massive area was being prepared for the breach.

The area was massive, around several hundred square feet. There were massive mechanical spires that surrounded a large circular arena; the tops of said spires were glowing brightly as loud sirens were going off in the distance.

Around the arena, several people who were in hazmat suits were running around with haste, shouting orders at each other as they began connecting massive cables to terminals. Even with the entire area devoid of color, the entire staff was continuing their work. They knew that they didn't have enough time; the fluctuations of the Veil's Breach Energy might work against their favor.

Markus was seen walking amongst the workers, not wearing a hazmat suit, unlike them, "Make sure the generators are primed!!" He said, "Have the containment fields ready! The barriers surrounding the chambers must be activated when Demeter starts!! Where are the Chosen?! Have them ready!!"

As he was calling about, the group of Chosen was led through by a person in a hazmat. They weren't wearing the protective suits either, having their casual clothing on.

"Whoa..." Spike said as he stumbled, "This is where they open the breaches?!"

"Even down here...." Cecilia said as she hugged herself, shuddering slightly, "There is no color...."

Mael was walking along them, tapping with his walking stick, "Hm...."

The group of seven Chosen stopped before Markus, who was shouting at some of the workers, "No!" He exclaimed, "That should be three feet to the right, not the left! Get it right! Demeter needs to have it perfect!"

The workers were scrambling about, trying their hardest to get things done right.

Mael wandered to Markus's side, "What's going on?" He asked, "Describe it to me."

Markus looked at him, "Hm?" He said, "Oh, Mael. Right now, the crew is making sure everything is proper for the Energy Surge, should it happen. Demeter is about to arrive so I have to ensure that all the terminals are operational."

"Do you have the energy absorbers properly aligned." Mael tilted his head, listening to all the chaos, "And are the cables thick enough?"

Markus nodded, "Of course they are." He said, "Your Father's notes are still used."

"Good." Mael said with a chuckle, "Well.....good luck with that."

"Alright, maggots!" a voice bellowed

Everyone looked over to see Demeter walking towards the arena as a tall and skinny robot followed.

"Is that a fucking robot?!" Spike exclaimed

Mael frowned, "A robot?"

"Yes, yes." Markus said, "Everyone! Get everything ready! Now! We have no time!!"

"That's right, Markus!" Demeter smirked, "Mirage here will help you guys with the Surge if you're not prepared. We're starting now!"

"Already?" Markus asked her

Demeter cracked her knuckles, "Oh yea." She said, "I want to head to the crater and watch the Titans that are gathering there."

"There is a Titan gathering?!" Markus said

"Oh yes." Demeter said

"You must allow me to accompany you." Markus said

"Well, let's get this party started." Demeter winked at him

"Everyone, prepare yourself!" Markus told everyone, "We're commencing!"

"Already?!" Cecilia said as the other Chosen shifted nervously

Demeter cleared her throat, "Let's see here..... " she said, "Fortunately, I have made friends with one last year and it was already near before the Event started."

"You're serious???" Markus asked with widened eyes

"Mhm." Demeter said before opening her mouth

Suddenly, a loud shriek escaped her mouth, causing a powerful distortion in the air in front of them. Everyone who heard it buckled hard and covered their ears, some of them screaming in pain as the entire space began to twist and turn.

"W-What?!" Mael dropped his stick and collapsed to one knee, "The hell!!"

"Begin the Breach Opening!!" Markus raised his hand, "Now!"

Suddenly, louder sirens began to ring as Demeter raised her arms in the air, letting out another powerful shriek that caused everyone to buckle yet again.

"ARrrrghhh!!!" Mael shouted in pain, covering his ears, "Shitt!!!"

The spires that surrounded the arena suddenly fired bright energy at the ceiling, which was gathered in thick coils that were connected to massive emitters. The emitters suddenly fired the energy into the center of the arena, causing a powerful shockwave.

Demeter let out a final shriek, the entire area distorting as a massive shadowy figure appeared next to the spires.

Markus widened his eyes, "A...titan...."

Everyone watched as the shadowy figure flickered in and out of existence, facing Demeter, who was waving her arms around, causing ripples in the air itself. Her eyes were glowing bright white as she did so, signifying some kind of ability of hers.

The Shadow Titan suddenly raised its long and skinny hand, hovering it at the spot where the energy had collided. Then, as if it were that easy, a massive dimensional breach opened, causing a powerful shockwave to erupt. The shockwave hit everyone and nearly sent them flying; only Demeter, Markus, and the robot were unfazed.

"Ah." Markus said as the massive portal had opened

The distortions in the air gave off waves of light and color, causing the entire chamber to revert to its normal state. The walls were white and blue as the spires were red and green in color. Everyone was surprised at this, looking at the massive dimensional gate before them. It was an oval swirling vortex of pure energy, releasing waves of light,

The Shadow Titan was holding its hand over the Breach, waving its hand at Demeter, who was nodding in response.

"Yea, so...." Demeter looked at Markus, "Toss them in there. It's late for the Gathering."

"Shit." Markus reached for Mael who was on the ground, "Breachers!! Go, go, go!!"

The robot extended its arms, releasing massive elastic cables around the Chosen who were taken by surprise. Then, without warning, it dragged them along towards the Breach as they exclaimed in protest.

"Handle them with care, Mirage!" Demeter said

Mirage then flung them into the portal, their bodies disappearing as they passed through. Its cables retracted into its arms and stepped back as Markus was dragging Mael along.

"Sorry about this, Mael." Markus said as Mael was groaning in pain, "I'll send a check to your sisters as an apology."

Then, Markus tossed Mael through the portal as he let out a surprised yelp.

"The fuc-" Mael said as he was swallowed into the portal

"This is very fucking sloppy!" Markus exclaimed as he looked at Demeter

"3.....2.....1...." Demeter looked at her nails

Suddenly, the Breach released a wave of light and energy, causing alarms to sound. Markus was hit by a shockwave and he was sent flying to the ground.

"Shit!" He said as he stood up, "Demeter...."

Demeter looked at him, "Told ya this will work." She said as waves of energy were being released, "The Energy Surge is successful. Like always...."

"I had a 100% success rate~"
