Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 Young Man, Do You Have a Dream?

With mutated zombies already appearing, Bai Mu wouldn't be too surprised if some Lickers popped up next. The real concern was how to avoid injury when facing something so fast and infectious.

He didn't think he possessed any protagonist's constitution that allowed him to ignore infection after being infected.

The best way was to find a vaccine.

But were there any vaccines here?

  Actually, there were!

All the researchers in the lab were wiped out, and there weren't many living zombies left. During the search, Bai Mu and his team didn't encounter much trouble.

There were also unused test subjects here. However, while the cages protected them from being eaten by the mutated zombies, they didn't protect them from turning into zombies themselves.

The zombies in the cages weren't a big threat. They found some broken containers here. Thorn took out his phone and checked: "That's right, these are the things, this is the vaccine!"

"But it's broken." Bai Mu looked at the fragments helplessly. Next to the fragments, there were some small pieces, probably leftovers from the mutated zombies.

Apparently, some researchers had accidentally been infected with the virus, found the vaccine to try and save themselves, but were eaten by the mutated zombies.

"Let's see if we can find a complete one." Thorn was also frustrated. The group searched the lab for a while but couldn't find a new vaccine. They didn't quite understand the various vials and jars.

Thorn scratched his head, seemingly hating himself for being just a soldier whose brain wasn't working properly at this moment.

"Fuck! Take the hard drives out!" Thorn finally came up with a good idea.

Since there was no vaccine, they might as well take the hard drives; there should be research data on them.

After removing some computer hard drives, just as they were about to leave, the communicator rang.

  "Please respond! Please respond!"

"Who the hell are you?" Thorn looked at the intact monitor and spat out a loud question.

"I am the manager of Lab Six. If you want a vaccine, come to me immediately. The other labs have already fallen; they're not worth exploring."

As the other party spoke, the still-operating computer began switching screens to show the situation in other labs.

"Bastards! You guys developed the virus, how come you've been infected too!"

Thorn slammed his fist on the table in anger.

"This is a conspiracy. The virus stored in the lab leaked due to a power outage, and we've been betrayed. The entire city is an experimental site. If you want the vaccine, come find me quickly, and we'll escape together."

  "Hmph! Just you wait!"

Thorn glanced angrily at the monitor.

"Wait, I'll give you a map..."

"No need." Thorn pulled out the map from before, and the person on the other end of the line was stunned.

"How do you have a map?"

"I caught a bitten bastard before, and he gave me this because he didn't want to die, begging me to help him get the vaccine."

The voice in the lab was silent for a moment: "Hurry up, I can't hold out much longer. There's a very powerful mutant here."

"Are we going? It sounds like a trap." Matt asked, feeling that the voice had come at too much of a time. Although he was curious about the computers in the lab, this was clearly not the time to be curious about those things.

"Yes, if you feel unsafe, you can drive away after dropping me off. There's enough gas in the car to get you to the rendezvous point."

  Thorn's attitude was firm.

"Let's go check it out first. If there's only one mutant, we can just bring more weapons, right?"

Bai Mu suggested. He didn't have a system or a notification panel, but their presence here was all about Thor. In this 'dream,' Thor was clearly the protagonist.

Getting too far away from him might not be a good choice.

"Let's go to a supply point I know of first, and bring some tough guys!"

Like a lone hero in a movie, Thor navigated the city with ease. If it weren't for that mutated zombie almost causing his downfall, he could have continued to be carefree.

With ample supplies and immunity to the zombie virus, everyone who saw him thought he was the protagonist.

The team was now only missing one or two pretty, but potentially troublesome, women.

However, no such women appeared along the way. They arrived at the new supply point smoothly, removed their equipment, and tore off the bandages from their arms. The scratches on them had mostly healed.

It had only been less than an hour.

"Have you guys noticed something?" Matt found Bai Mu and whispered his discovery: "If this virus can affect the entire city, how come we haven't been affected since we arrived here?"

"I don't want to test whether I'll get infected," Bai Mu said immediately, disinfecting the protective gear he was wearing with disinfectant.

"..." Matt was speechless for a moment. He saw that Bai Mu was young and wanted to suggest this, to see if he could persuade the young man to give it a try.

He had also noticed that Thorn's wounds were healing abnormally fast.

Should he let someone else try? Gunman Eller was a gold digger, and there weren't many people like that who were easy to fool, or rather, those who were easy to fool wouldn't have gotten this far.

  Buddy was his man.

"I'm not talking about that. You noticed Thorn's wounds, right? Ordinary people couldn't recover in such a short time. I suspect his recovery ability is related to those virus studies, and also the strength he showed!"

That mutated zombie was so powerful; it could withstand several bullets and still continue to move, and the speed it displayed was something ordinary people didn't possess.

Could a virus enhance those moving corpses to this extent?

If it could become so powerful, would it still need to do sewer cleaning work?

Matt hadn't seen any Resident Evil movies, but he still keenly grasped the key point about the 'virus'.

Gunman Eller said, "This is another treasure. Since this city specializes in researching such viruses, it's definitely not for creating such terrorist incidents, or rather, such terrorist incidents are just a side effect."

He glanced at Thorn, "His situation might be special, but since there are vaccines for those viruses, there should be safer ways to utilize them."

White Curtain lowered his voice, "You want to try those viruses?"

"If there's a safe way to acquire power, I'll try. I've seen those superhumans; they're even more exaggerated than that monster. So this is an opportunity for an ordinary person to come into contact with the superhuman!"

Asking about the choice between 100 combat power and a billion, there's no question—it's definitely 100 combat power! You can't protect money without strength, but you can't be without money if you have strength. A little chaos and evil, and everywhere is a goldmine.

Superhumans are different, but the difference between superhumans and ordinary people is even greater. Are low-level superhumans not superhumans?

There's such an opportunity in this dream, and Gunman Eller really wants to seize it, provided it's safe. He doesn't want to become a monster.

"Once we find the vaccine, we can try it," Matt said, sharing his thoughts. "After all, we weren't infected here, so maybe we'll end up like 'Corpse Thorn.'"

"Then let's try it?" Bai Mu seemed tempted, but inwardly wondered, when did these three get together?

Buddy was probably Matt's man, and Gunman Eller… well, in this place, Matt seemed much more reliable than him.

Matt smiled. "This is a rare opportunity."

After finishing their meal and relieving themselves in the restroom, Thorn prepared to leave.

This time, he didn't pay attention to the equipment Bai Mu was carrying. Considering the unknown mutant in the lab they were going to, Thorn even felt their current equipment wasn't enough.

He'd been in this city for almost half a month without encountering any mutants. Since recovering from his infection and high fever, the zombies had been no match for him.

Even zombies in their outbreak state couldn't keep up with his speed.

But now that a mutant has appeared, he feels a strong threat. If one such thing can appear, more could. If the terrorist organization researching the virus conducts new experiments elsewhere, humanity will be in danger.

A vaccine must be found to fundamentally eliminate the possibility of this virus spreading!

"Are these bombs enough?" Bai Mu checked the supplies Thorn had prepared. There was even a Claymore mine and several C4s; Thorn was overflowing with supplies.

"It should be enough… The army left behind a lot of supplies when they retreated, but for ease of operation, I dispersed them to different supply points."

Thorn regretted it somewhat; if he had known this would happen, he wouldn't have dispersed the supplies for convenience.

Now there might not be time to find new supplies. Although he thought those scientists researching the virus deserved to die, he was more worried that those who contacted them would sacrifice themselves before anything happened and destroy the vaccine.

Bai Mu couldn't find any rocket launchers or similar weapons, which was a pity.

Back in the car, Thorn didn't deliberately control his speed this time. Laboratory Six was far away, and it would take a considerable amount of time to get there slowly.

They no longer dealt with zombies blocking their path silently; they opened fire directly.

This time, they brought plenty of supplies, and Bai Mu had a blast firing along the way.

  Laboratory Six.

The administrator, hiding in the safe house, nervously watched the monitors. Occasionally, a figure would appear on the screen, and he would show a look of lingering fear—it was a mutated zombie.

The research here had been going well, but there must have been a mole within the organization. Multiple laboratories storing the virus experienced a power outage, causing a leak. By the time they discovered it, it was too late.

A large amount of virus spread, and the entire city fell. Although the concentration of the virus after the spread was not high, it was still beyond the resistance of most people, even affecting the troops who had entered.

They were researching biological viruses, but they absolutely did not want the city to become like this. If this was the organization's decision, then the organization's higher-ups must have made a huge mistake!

Demonstrating the power of a product shouldn't be done this way! Damn it, I'm still here! Even if they did this, they should have gotten me out of here first!

If there was a mole, then their organization would be in deep trouble.
