Chapter 6 - Close enough to burn

By the time Maya reached the office the next morning, her mind was buzzing with the notes and findings from the investigation she had started the day before. The letter Adrian had handed her was still fresh in her thoughts. Personal secrets bleeding into business matters. It was complicated, confusing, and—somehow—impossibly fascinating.

She stepped into his office and froze for a moment. Adrian was standing near the floor-to-ceiling window, coffee in hand, staring out at the city. The early morning light hit his sharp features, casting shadows that made him look untouchable, almost like a sculpture.

"Good morning," Maya said cautiously, keeping her voice steady despite the fluttering in her chest.

"Morning," he replied, eyes still on the skyline. "Did you review the files?"

"Yes," she said. She moved to her desk, placing the folder in front of her. "Everything is cross-checked. The discrepancies are highlighted, and I've outlined the risks."

He finally turned to look at her, his dark eyes scanning the pages. He leaned over her desk, close enough that Maya could feel the faint warmth radiating from his body. Her pulse accelerated, and she fought the urge to step back. She reminded herself: stay professional. Focus. Survive.

"Good work," he said, voice low. "You notice details most people overlook. That's… useful."

Maya's cheeks warmed. She nodded, forcing herself to appear composed, even as her stomach fluttered.

Adrian straightened and walked toward the door, motioning for her to follow. "Come with me. I want to show you something."

Curiosity prickled through her. She followed silently as he led her to the conference room. The large table was empty, save for a single laptop and several documents.

"Sit," he said, gesturing to the chair across from him.

Maya sat, hands folded neatly in her lap. Adrian placed the laptop in front of her and opened a file. It was an internal memo, confidential and marked top secret.

"This," he said, leaning slightly closer, "is a situation we've been dealing with for months. Most people avoid it because it's complicated. Most assistants would crumble just looking at it. But you…" His eyes lingered on her, intense and unreadable, "…you might actually manage it."

Her pulse quickened. "I… I'll do my best," she whispered.

He studied her for a moment, then leaned back, smirk faint but present. "Good. I like determination. But don't get comfortable. I don't trust easily."

Maya swallowed. "I don't expect you to."

He tilted his head, eyes narrowing playfully. "You're different from the others. Bold. Honest. Stubborn. Dangerous."

"Dangerous?" she asked, caught off guard.

"You have no idea," he said softly, the corner of his mouth twitching into the faintest smirk. Then, almost abruptly, he stood and turned away, walking toward the window again.

Maya's heart thumped in her chest. Every time he was close, she felt like she was standing on the edge of something—something unpredictable, thrilling, and terrifying all at once.

The day passed in a haze of files, reports, and meetings. Maya worked tirelessly, and Adrian continued to watch her, silently, calculating, analyzing. By the time the sun began to dip behind the city skyline, Maya realized that something unspoken had shifted.

Adrian didn't smile often, but the briefest flicker of approval had passed over his features more than once today. And though he never said it directly, Maya felt that under the cold, sharp exterior, he was intrigued—by her mind, her courage, and maybe… by her.

When she finally left the office, exhaustion weighed on her, but it wasn't the kind of fatigue that crushed her spirit. It was the kind that left her restless, thinking, anticipating.

Outside, the city lights began to twinkle. Maya hugged her bag tightly and whispered to herself, I don't know what's coming, but I'm not backing down.

Somewhere in the distance, she felt the faint stirrings of change. And one thing was certain: Adrian Cole was a storm she couldn't ignore.
