The next time I opened my eyes, the room around me felt both familiar and strange, leaving me struggling to separate reality from whatever dreams had been haunting me. My ankle still pulsed with a dull, persistent ache.
"Mrs. Collin," a doctor's voice cut through my confusion, "you need to be careful with that injury moving forward. When the weather turns damp and the pain flares up, soak your feet in warm water. Don't overdo it with walking, or the healing process could go sideways."
As I pushed myself upright, I realized I was back in my bedroom at Collin Mansion.
I'd barely finished thanking the doctor and hadn't even gotten my bearings when Ridley shoved through the door and marched into my room.
He brought an arctic chill with him, his face set in stone. When his eyes found me, irritation sparked in their depths.
