I didn't yank my hand away from Hughes's grip—just stared at him with zero warmth.

"How'd you even find this place?" I asked.

The servant said Hughes had showed up here all by himself. But that made no sense—how would he know where to come?

Hughes was the Collin family's golden boy. With his health issues, they'd never let him wander around without tracking his every move.

Questions were spinning through my head like crazy.

Something flickered in Hughes's eyes—looked like panic to me.

The kid seemed rattled. "I heard Dad talking about you staying here in his study, so I snuck out to come find you," he mumbled.

I caught the way Hughes shifted around.

After years of looking after this kid, I knew all his little tells.

Just watching him fidget with his shirt told me everything—he was feeding me a load of crap.

I didn't bother calling him out. Instead, I pulled my hand free.
