Elisabeth's POV

Terror clawed at my chest, and I saw no point in hiding it. This killer had murdered Alphas without hesitation, cutting down multiple victims just to reach Jefferson. After putting a bullet in him, I knew I was next on their list. The realization twisted my stomach into knots.

Death wasn't something I was ready to face.

"Elisabeth, are you paying attention to what I'm saying?"

Jefferson's controlled yet commanding tone snapped me from my downward spiral. I forced my eyes to focus on him.

Lying seemed pointless. "Not really," I whispered, my voice barely audible.

My hands shook violently in my lap, betraying every emotion I couldn't contain. We'd been driving for an hour since leaving the hospital, sitting in the backseat of one of Jefferson's armored vehicles. The driver maintained professional silence while the engine's low rumble filled the tense space between us.

Jefferson's warm palm settled over my trembling fingers.
