The roar of the propellers was deafening, echoing through the sky over Raken City. Looking up, one could constantly see police helicopters emblazoned with the Umbrella logo flying overhead. Umbrella was deploying its soldiers to key locations, seizing control of transportation routes and high ground. It seemed like they were protecting the city, but in reality, they were trying to maintain order over the test site.
Most of them weren't there to protect the citizens, but to ensure Umbrella could control everything at the last moment.
However, there were exceptions among these troops. The U.B.C.S., Umbrella's most elite mercenary organization, was also ready for action. They were specifically formed to deal with emergencies involving bio-weapons. Now, they would fight alongside the police in this city to save the innocent civilians.
A difficult battle was about to begin.
"Help! Help! What are you?! Stay away!" A citizen screamed as he was chased by a group of "people." They could no longer be called human.
Their dilated pupils made the whites of their eyes almost disappear. The stench of decay was overwhelming, detectable from a distance. Up close, one could see the rotting flesh and gray, necrotic skin.
Some of them even had maggots crawling on their bodies, wriggling through their horrifying wounds. Just the sight of it was enough to make many people feel sick. But what they were about to do was far more than just make people lose their appetite; they were going to devour this person, stuffing him into their insatiable bellies.
These crazed zombies had surrounded the citizen. Their organs were severely decayed, and they emitted a low moan, like the wails of hungry ghosts. Driven by their simple desire for food, they reached out with their claws and teeth towards this unfortunate man.
"No! No! Don't come over here! Someone save me! Ah…" After a miserable scream, a human fell to the ground. Not long after, a corpse covered in wounds, like those from a beast's bite, gradually stood up. It dragged its sluggish body and joined its own kind, beginning to hunt for any living thing to fill its perpetually empty stomach.
In Raken City today, he wasn't the first unlucky fellow, nor would he be the last.
A large number of citizens were running in terror, having abandoned their private cars. The congested traffic had become a death trap. For survival, their legs became the only means of transportation. But they were still surrounded by large groups of these terrifying creatures. The outbreak of the biohazard had quickly turned this place into a ghost realm, and the vast zombie horde was enough to make anyone shudder.
Some citizens with weapons began to fire in a panic, but they couldn't stop the advance of the sea of corpses. They could only let out miserable, desperate screams because, in their eyes, survival had become impossible.
Just then, several police patrol cars and SUVs carrying riot police stopped at the intersection not far away. Wearing bulletproof vests and helmets, holding G36 assault rifles and MP5 submachine guns, and almost armed to the teeth, the riot police quickly jumped out of the police cars. They used the police cars as cover and launched a fierce attack against the large groups of zombies opposite them.
"Those who want to live, come over here quickly!" A police officer shouted through a loudspeaker at the fleeing citizens. Looking at the vast, black mass of zombies opposite them, numbering at least a thousand, he couldn't help but wipe the cold sweat off his forehead. The immense pressure made his legs tremble, but seeing the citizens with their children, he gritted his teeth and persevered. At the same time, he shouted to his subordinates, "Fire! Free fire!!!"
The narrow streets were filled with countless swarming zombies, their figures everywhere. The terrifying moaning sound that constantly echoed in their ears, as well as the annoying crying and shouting around them, was enough to make any police officer feel suffocated. The overwhelming scene of endless zombies was enough to destroy the fragile confidence of these police officers.
A gunshot rang out, and a huge splash of blood burst from the chest of a zombie leading the way. Then, gunshots continued to ring out, and golden shell casings constantly fell to the ground. Bullets poured into the sea of corpses as if they were free, trying to stop the zombies from advancing. But, except for a few zombies, most of them still surged forward like a tide.
The horrifying scene shocked all the police officers. If these were ordinary people who had been shot several times, they would have long since gone to their maker. But these terrifying monsters, unless shot in the head, would keep crawling towards the police even if they were torn to shreds. Although the movements of these corpses were slow, they brought an indescribable fear to everyone. Not everyone could withstand this terrible pressure, and some of the police officers at the front were on the verge of collapse.
Someone shouted in a trembling voice, "What kind of monster is this? It can't be killed!" But no one had time to respond. Sweat covered the forehead of every police officer. They kept aiming, pulling the trigger, and then reloading, but the rapid consumption of ammunition could not effectively stop the zombies from advancing.
In desperation, a police officer took out a high-explosive grenade and threw it into the sea of corpses. The fragmentation grenade exploded among the dense zombies, but aside from a few zombies whose heads were blown off, the others still advanced towards them.
However, the explosions did have some effect, as it helped the collapsing police officers regain some confidence. Then, one grenade after another was thrown at the zombies. The zombie groups exploded one after another, appearing to suffer heavy casualties, but not many zombies were actually eliminated. And soon, the police were running out of ammunition.
Without ammunition, how could humans compete with such immortal monsters? This question almost lingered in everyone's mind. The exhausted police officers could no longer resist. Finally, when the officer in charge of the operation issued the order to retreat, the police force began to retreat in a panic.
But the zombies that surrounded them from all directions made it difficult for their team to move, especially the civilians who were mixed in with them, which greatly hindered their actions. They could have driven away, but that was without the civilians slowing them down. Now, they could only rely on their own two feet.
The team moved forward slowly like an elderly person. Suddenly, a police officer who was reloading his magazine was pushed to the ground by a zombie that pounced from the side. Several zombies immediately followed and pounced on him. The police officer let out a miserable scream, and soon, the sound subsided.
He was the first police officer to fall, but not the last. After him, the police line finally collapsed. The outermost police officers were overwhelmed by the zombie tide one after another. Their screams stimulated the nerves of all the survivors. The immense pressure crushed the psychological defenses of many police officers. Some police officers began to desperately run towards what they thought was a safe place, and some even desperately threw away their guns. The line was breached, and the zombies poured in. The bulletproof helmets, stained with blood, reflected the distorted faces of those who were terrified.
Death was already at hand, and more terrifying than imagined.
Despair and madness had caused everyone to lose hope, but then, the roar of a truck came. A huge truck roared as it charged towards the zombie horde, its immense horsepower smashing everything in its path, crushing countless zombies into disgusting pulp. When it slammed head-on into the wall, its massive body blocked one side of the street completely.
The survivors gained a chance to breathe, but the situation was still dire.
"Come here quickly, there's a way through here!" At this moment, a person suddenly rushed out from the alley on the side of the street. Jill stood there, waving to all the survivors.
As if grasping at the last straw, both the police and civilians frantically rushed towards the alley, and all order was in chaos for a moment. Jill shouted desperately, but the effect was almost nonexistent.
On the other side, the zombies also followed the survivors. The truck blocked the path of the zombies on one side, but couldn't stop the zombies on the other. Seeing the zombies getting closer and closer, various strange cries immediately erupted from the crowd, as they pushed and shoved the people in front of them, wanting to rush into this relatively safe shelter faster. However, besides causing even greater chaos, they couldn't even move forward.
Then, a loud gunshot suddenly rang out, and the head of the zombie at the front turned into a pulp, twitching and collapsing on the ground. After that, a tall man charged out, carrying a car door. He slammed the car door onto a zombie's face, smashing it into a pile of mud. At the same time, wielding a short sword, he instantly sliced off the heads of four or five zombies.
For a moment, not even a zombie could stand within a foot of him.
"Those who can still hold a gun, aim for the head. Women, the elderly, and children, go in first, the police will hold the line!" Zhou Yi shouted, wielding a short sword and using a car door as a shield, all while never stopping his assault on the zombies swarming towards them.
One after another, zombies fell at his feet. Even though he was alone, he prevented the zombies from advancing any further into the alley. Such a sight was incredibly encouraging.
Some of the police officers spontaneously stepped forward, using their remaining ammunition to help Zhou Yi clear out the zombies. Other officers began desperately trying to maintain order.
Democracy and freedom were useless at this moment. They used their fists to teach those who recklessly tried to rush forward a lesson, while simultaneously protecting the elderly, the weak, and the women, allowing them to quickly get through the open gate at the end of the alley.
A fragile order was established, and it became a lifeline for all the survivors here. Dissenting voices were suppressed, and panic still reigned, but their feet could not stop moving.
Everyone anxiously watched the guy at the front, whose efforts were crucial to the lives of everyone there. Every moment he held on meant another chance for survival.
Whether they were police officers or civilians, they all placed their hope on that brave man. And the brave man did not disappoint them.
The crowd gradually disappeared into the escape gate, and Zhou Yi and the police officers retreated as they fought. Soon, he and those holding the line rushed through the gate as well.
The moment the gate slammed shut, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. But before they could even finish exhaling, the frantic pounding from behind the gate made their hearts leap into their throats again.
That sound told them this was hell, and there was no escape.
