Ignoring the incessant banging from behind, the sturdy door wasn't something a few Zombies could easily break down. While it certainly wouldn't hold forever, at least he didn't have to worry about it for the moment.
However, the faces of the Police around him weren't good. It was as if the noise wasn't just hitting the door, but their fragile minds as well. Zhou Yi didn't mock them, because anyone who had just returned from hell would be the same. He just pointed at the surrounding freezers and various shelves and said:
"If you don't want them getting in here, you'd better use these things to block the door!"
As soon as he finished speaking, several Police officers immediately moved, pushing the huge freezers over to firmly brace against the constantly vibrating door. Then piles of shelves were also pushed onto the freezers. With these, it was almost impossible for the door to be forced open. And after completing all of this, the Police officers all collapsed to the ground.
They weren't tired; they were purely scared.
But it was still far from time for them to rest. This was a large hotel, and they were currently in the back door storage room. There were usually quite a few people coming and going from the hotel, so naturally, the lower floors wouldn't be very safe.
Zombies would pursue living creatures to any corner, and who knew if there were Zombies hiding in this godforsaken place. Looking at the citizens, who were terrified like startled birds, Zhou Yi said to Jill:
"I'll go up and clear those things out. You organize these people. Seal off the entire first floor, move the furniture out of the rooms to block the staircases and passages. Get everyone up to the higher floors, and don't forget to check if anyone's injured. You know what's going to happen, so don't do anything stupid!"
Jill nodded. As a former elite, she naturally knew what consequences could come from being soft-hearted at a time like this.
After receiving Jill's response, Zhou Yi carried the car door, still covered in blood and flesh, and went up the stairs. He certainly didn't need it, but the survivors here did. A fearsome weapon often gives people confidence and courage, even if it's insignificant, it's still precious.
With no one around, Zhou Yi cleared out the Zombies quickly. Occasionally, he encountered a survivor or two, and he directly pointed them toward a path to survival. Staying with a large group of survivors seemed much safer than following him, a lone wolf. This idea was naturally accepted by the survivors, and they followed the safe passage Zhou Yi had cleared, joining up with the main group. They also brought the latest news.
Soon, the entire hotel was completely cleared. When Zhou Yi returned, Jill was already leading the survivors into this temporary camp.
"There are a total of two hundred and seventy people, with over seventy being Police. They're enough to maintain order here, but if they encounter those mutated monsters, I'm afraid the things they have won't guarantee their safety."
She was directing the Police, gathering the survivors together, while reporting the situation to Zhou Yi.
"Also, no one is injured, which is the only good news so far."
"Don't worry too much. The troops will be stationed here after tonight. These people just need to stay here!" Zhou Yi comforted her slightly. While they were clearing and moving into the hotel, the commotion outside had already subsided.
The dense gunfire in the city had begun to gradually diminish, and sometimes desperate screams reached their ears. It went without saying that they could guess another group of unfortunate people had been swallowed by the Zombie tide. This sound gave the survivors here a feeling of grief for the death of others. Many people had begun to cry uncontrollably.
"Sir, is what you said true? Will the troops really come to rescue us?" A Police officer who had heard Zhou Yi and Jill's conversation walked over and asked. He was the superior of this group of Police officers, and the one who had initially supported Zhou Yi.
Seeing the uneasy expression on this officer's face, Zhou Yi smiled and patted his shoulder.
"Don't worry, I maintain contact with the special department, and they will be here to support us soon. As you've seen, those monsters aren't that scary as long as we have enough weapons."
Hearing Zhou Yi's reassurance, the officer forced a smile. The monsters that Zhou Yi said were easy to deal with had already become the most terrifying nightmare in his mind. He even doubted whether he would be able to sleep soundly in the future. After thinking for a moment, he asked his question. Compared to Jill, he believed Zhou Yi more. Whether it was his temperament or the courage he displayed, Zhou Yi was much more credible in the officer's eyes.
"Is this really all Umbrella's doing? Although I've heard this Officer Jill's explanation, I still don't quite believe it. This city was built by them, why would they do this?"
"Officer, this question has been confirmed. However, it's not something you need to worry about now. You just need to help these survivors hold out until the rescue arrives. As for the rest, you can investigate later!"
The officer shook his head, self-deprecatingly.
"You're right, it's incredibly stupid to consider this at this moment! According to this lady, you're leaving here?"
"We still have to rescue as many people as possible, so we're sorry. You're on your own here. Just hold out until sunrise, and rescue will come." Zhou Yi nodded. Their plan was to save as many people as possible. Naturally, they couldn't stay in one place for long.
The police officer didn't stop them; he didn't have the thought, nor the authority to do so. In the end, he just asked Zhou Yi.
"Sir, I hope you won't forget the survivors here; their lives are in your hands."
"Don't worry!" Zhou Yi replied solemnly. He understood what his answer meant. Without this answer, these people might not be able to hold out until tomorrow.
Soon, Zhou Yi and Jill were once again on their rescue mission. Relying on the police, and even the now-abandoned U.B.C.S.'s forces, they quickly established small Shelters in hotels, supermarkets, and apartments. Maybe these people couldn't face the hordes of Zombies on the streets, but in this kind of confined environment, it wasn't a problem for them to hold out for a while.
At each Shelter, Jill would explain the Zombies' weaknesses and Umbrella's conspiracy to everyone, while Zhou Yi would give them the last bit of confidence, mobilizing their desire to survive with the nonexistent support.
Supported by their will to survive, every survivor burst forth with amazing strength. Zhou Yi didn't doubt whether they could hold on until then; he only worried about those who hadn't been rescued in this city.
Even though the two of them had done their best, Jill was even exhausted. However, compared to the huge number of citizens in this city, their efforts were only saving a small number of people.
Even if Zhou Yi became the Dawn Knight, it wouldn't be much different. This terrible disaster couldn't be solved by one person's power. Only the intervention of the state and the military could truly solve it.
Leaving the newly established Shelter, Zhou Yi drove the car, with the dozing Jill, towards the other end of the city. While driving, he contacted Coulson, who had been on standby, through the glasses on his nose. He had listened to Natasha's advice and contacted Coulson at the beginning of the crisis. By now, they should be almost here.
"Phil, how are your preparations going!"
"In another hour, our troops will arrive in Raken City. In addition, I have conveyed your information. Although we can't get rid of this virus for the time being, we have prepared a lot of freezing devices. If there are infected people, we will place them as quickly as possible."
Mentioning this problem, Zhou Yi was a little irritable. His ability was harmful here. Even those humans who hadn't been turned into Zombies would undergo huge mutations after receiving his treatment. He couldn't create superhumans everywhere; that would only provide a breeding ground for guys like Umbrella.
"Don't you have any other way? There are tens of thousands of injured people, and the number is still increasing. You can't accommodate so many people."
"I know, but Natasha just sent a message. She found a spy, and she has the information about the T-Virus. With this information, maybe we can quickly produce an antidote!" Coulson brought good news. Hearing this news, Zhou Yi immediately hit the brakes.
The antidote was crucial. With the data, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s scientific capabilities, combined with the research institute under his command, manufacturing the antidote wouldn't be a problem. And with the antidote, the lives of many people in this city could be saved. So, he abandoned the plan to continue building Shelters and pressed on.
"Did Natasha say where that spy is?"
"She's still searching. I'll notify you immediately when there's news."
Zhou Yi understood that rushing wouldn't help in this situation. He trusted Coulson and Natasha's abilities, so he left the matter to them. He simply sent them some information.
"Phil, this is the location of the Shelters we've established so far. There are twelve in total, with about two thousand people. You must arrange for rescue personnel. The longer it takes, the more dangerous the situation becomes."
Looking at Zhou Yi's information, Coulson praised him.
"You've done an amazing job, buddy. If this were the past, you'd be a saint like Moses! I'll arrange the rescue personnel right away!"
"Forget it, I think I'm more like a devil than a saint!" Zhou Yi said with a wry smile. He had saved many people, but he had also watched many die. His sins were as heavy as his glory.
However, Coulson didn't hear what he said. The only one who could hear was Jill, who was dozing with her back to him. She heard it all, but she didn't know what to say. So she could only close her eyes and pretend nothing had happened.
Her heart was in turmoil, just like this crazy city.
Zhou Yi and Jill were still working to save the people of the city, while Umbrella was brewing new conspiracies.
Raymond sat in the tent, which was a temporary camp set up by Umbrella. The purpose was for safety and to monitor their weapons project. The chaos of Umbrella had exceeded his imagination, and the harm caused by the biohazard crisis even far exceeded their expectations.
In less than a day, the troops he had sent out had suffered heavy losses, which forced him to recall most of the army. Only the U.B.C.S. were left. They were mercenaries, and he didn't feel bad about their deaths. Moreover, from the very beginning, he had planned to sacrifice this mercenary force.
Their unstable factors were too great, and Umbrella had long planned to eliminate them. Now, it was just a coincidence.
Just as Raymond was still monitoring the bio-weapons he had released, his deputy rushed into the tent. He reported a piece of bad news to him.
"Sir, there are many survivors in the city appearing on the outskirts. They will be leaving Raken City soon. What should we do?"
"How many people?"
"At least tens of thousands, sir."
Tens of thousands of people escaping Raken City was a consequence Umbrella couldn't afford. They would publicize the situation in Raken City and even spread the T-Virus to the outside world. Once such a thing happened, neither he nor Umbrella could escape a crime against humanity. Death would be the best-case scenario.
"Give the order, activate the city's defense lines. Don't let anyone leave Raken City, at any critical moment. I authorize you to open fire!" Raymond spoke with resolute determination, and at the same time, it was terrifyingly bloody.
The subordinate understood his meaning, but he didn't have the courage to convey it. The lives of tens of thousands of people were placed before him; he really couldn't bear this weight.
Raymond was now extremely brutal. Seeing his subordinate's hesitation, he directly drew his pistol and aimed it at him.
"Remember, once what we're doing is exposed, we won't even have the right to be human. So, if you want to live, if you want to be treated like a human being, then give the order obediently. If you don't have the courage, it's better if I give you a quick death right now!"
His words and attitude made the subordinate burst into tears. Facing himself and others, the subordinate made his choice.
Soon, a shocking scene unfolded on the highways, mountains, and even the wilderness surrounding Raken City. Huge steel barriers rose from the earth, piece by piece, forming massive, continuous steel walls.
These steel walls blocked the path of all those trying to escape. No one could climb over walls three stories high, especially with elite soldiers guarding them.
Umbrella had made up its mind: they would turn this city into a dead city. And all the residents would be buried with it. Because only the dead wouldn't reveal their secrets, and only the dead would minimize Umbrella's losses.
They had gone completely mad. Beneath the guise of civilized people lay a demonic interior that humans could never imagine.
