Chapter 74 - Handler’s Choice: Yan Ming Must Decide Who He Serves

The Court chamber dissolved behind Yan Ming, its silver glyphs fading like dying stars.

He walked through the barriered corridors in silence—steps precise, breath steady, posture perfect.

But his mind—

not steady.Not calm.Not at peace.

Because the Court had just created a new classification.A dangerous one.A precedent that would ripple through the entire sect.

Lian Hong: Unbounded – Catalyst Class.

No one had ever been classified as a Catalyst.

Because the category had not existed until five minutes ago.

And he was the one who created it.

Yan Ming stopped in the empty hallway.

He closed his eyes.

For the first time in years, his hands trembled.

"…Catalyst."

A word with ten meanings—all of them dangerous.

He hadn't planned to say it.It wasn't protocol.It wasn't procedure.It wasn't even legal.

But when Elder Hua proposed termination, and Grand Elder Shen proposed paradox,Yan Ming realized something:

If he allowed the Court to define Lian Hong—

they would kill him.

Or worse.

Contain him forever.

And Lian Hong would cease to grow.

So Yan Ming forced the Court to adopt a categorythat required protection, that required guidance, that required freedom to develop.

A Catalyst could not be locked away.

A Catalyst had to be nurtured.

He had bought Lian Hong time.

But—

he had also placed himself in direct opposition to Elder Hua's faction.

Yan Ming exhaled.

A rare, quiet sigh.

"…I have compromised more than I ever should."

He resumed walking.

Halfway down the corridor, the torches flickered.

Wind flowed through the sealed stone corridor—impossible.

Yan Ming stopped.

A voice whispered behind his ear:

"You're changing."

Yan Ming didn't turn.

He spoke calmly:

"Get out."

A figure stepped from the shadows.

Not the masked killer.

Not an elder.

A young Court operative—lower rank, blue robe, trembling slightly.

He bowed deeply.

"Senior Handler… forgive my intrusion, but I was ordered to deliver a message."

Yan Ming's eyes narrowed.

"Whose order?"

The operative swallowed.

"…Elder Hua."

Yan Ming's jaw tightened.

"Speak."

The boy's voice quivered.

"She requests a meeting—immediately—regarding your vote."

Yan Ming's expression did not change.

But the air turned sharp.

His voice chilled by degrees.

"And why send a junior instead of a messenger seal?"

The boy hesitated.

"…Because Elder Hua does not want it recorded."

That explained everything.

Yan Ming bit back a curse.

"Very well."

"I will meet her."

The boy bowed again, relieved—

but Yan Ming raised a hand.

"Wait."

The boy froze.

Yan Ming's silver eyes pierced through him.

"What did she tell you about Lian Hong?"

The boy stammered.

"N-nothing, Senior Handler—only rumors—only that he is dangerous, unstable, unpredictable—"

Yan Ming cut him off.

"None of that is true."

"Yes—yes, Senior Handler—of course—!"

Yan Ming stepped closer.

"Do you fear him?"

"Yes—"

"Good."

The boy blinked.

Yan Ming continued:

"But fear the wrong things, and you will die before understanding why."

The operative bowed in terror and fled.

Yan Ming stood alone again.

Hands cold.

Mind sharper than ever.

"…So they have already begun."

The chamber door slid open.

Elder Hua stood inside, robes flowing like crimson flame.

Her eyes gleamed with calculated disdain.

"Handler Yan Ming."

He bowed minimally.

"Elder."

She extended a hand toward the seat opposite her.

"Sit."

"I prefer to stand."

Her smile thinned, but she didn't insist.

She walked in a slow circle around him.

"You created a new classification."

"Yes."

"Without authorization."

"Yes."

"Without precedent."

"Yes."

She stopped.

Behind him.

Her voice was cold silk.

"Why?"

Yan Ming closed his eyes for a breath.

Then opened them.

"Because Undefined would destroy him."

"And Grade 0 would destroy the sect."

Elder Hua laughed softly.

"My, my.Such loyalty to a boy."

"Loyalty is not the word."

"No?" She stepped closer. "Then what word would you use?"

Yan Ming answered without hesitation.

"Responsibility."

Elder Hua's smile vanished.

She walked in front of him.

Her voice hardened.

"You are walking down a path that will end your career."

Yan Ming did not flinch.

"If protecting him ends my career, then it ends."

Elder Hua's expression sharpened like a blade.

"You cannot protect him."

"I can try."

"You will fail."

"Then I will fail."

"And the Court will revoke your authority."

"I expect they will."

"And they may execute you."

Yan Ming's voice was quiet.

"If they do—it will be because I chose correctly."

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

Elder Hua leaned forward.

Her whisper was venom:

"You are choosing a boy over your own Court."

Yan Ming met her gaze directly.

"No."

He stepped past her.

"I am choosing what the Court should be."

The door closed behind him.

Lian Hong sat outside under the moonlight.

His shadow pulsed faintly beneath him.

Not threatening.Not ominous.

Just… alive.

Su Qingyue approached.

"You're thinking too much."

"…Maybe."

"Yan Ming will handle it."

Lian Hong looked up.

His voice quiet.

"He shouldn't have to fight the Court for me."

Su Qingyue sat beside him.

"He isn't fighting for you."

Lian Hong frowned.

"What do you mean?"

She smiled faintly.

"He's fighting for someone he believes in."

Lian Hong turned away.

"…I don't deserve that."

"You don't have to deserve it."

She tapped his shoulder.

"Just don't waste it."

Zhou Shan burst through the door with a bowl of noodles:

"BRO—EAT—EAT—CARB-LOAD BEFORE MORE TRAUMA—!!"

Lian Hong laughed softly.

The moment was warm.

Human.

Normal.

But—

the temperature shifted.

A familiar ripple passed through the air.

Lian Hong's shadow expanded by a hair's breadth.

Only he noticed.

As if something inside it was listening.

Waiting.

Amused.

Late that night,Yan Ming finally returned to Lian Hong's courtyard.

He looked exhausted.

More than exhausted.

Worn.

He approached Lian Hong with slow steps.

Lian Hong stood.

"Are you alright?"

Yan Ming shook his head once.

"No."

A long pause.

Then—

"I need to make a decision."

Lian Hong waited.

Yan Ming spoke:

"From today onward…"

He took a breath.

Then exhaled.

"I will no longer serve the Court."

Lian Hong froze.

Su Qingyue gasped.

Zhou Shan dropped his noodles.

Yan Ming continued:

"I will serve you."

The courtyard went silent.

Completely.

Utterly.

Yan Ming finished quietly:

"It is the only way to protect you."

"And the only way to protect what comes next."
