Chapter 98 - The One the World Abandoned

They did not prepare a ritual.

They did not draw a formation.

They did not open a gate.

Because none of those thingswere permitted near the fracture.

Instead, they prepared a conversation.

The Court chamber had been cleared.

Not evacuated—emptied.

No observers.No scribes.No watchers.

Only Lian Hong,Yan Ming,Su Qingyue, and Zhou Shan—who was present only because removing him caused more disruption than keeping him.

Zhou Shan sat cross-legged on the floor.

"I AM HERE FOR EMOTIONAL SUPPORTAND MORAL SCREAMING—"

Yan Ming ignored him.

He placed a single marker on the stone floor—not a seal, not a boundary—

a reference point.

"This will not open the fracture," Yan Ming said calmly.

"It will allow resonancewithout expansion."

Su Qingyue frowned.

"And if it reacts?"

"Then we stop," Yan Ming replied."Immediately."

Lian Hong nodded.

"I understand."

The fracture pulsed faintly beneath the mountain.

Not hungry.

Aware.

Lian Hong stepped into the center.

No light flared.No pressure surged.

Only a subtle shift—like the world leaning slightly closer.

Yan Ming's voice was steady.

"Anchor your will."

Su Qingyue added quietly:

"We're here."

Zhou Shan whispered:

"PLEASE DON'T GET POSSESSED—"

Lian Hong ignored the noise.

He closed his eyes.

Not to retreat.

To listen.

He let his shadow settle—not reaching, not pulling.

Just present.

The reference point hummed softly.

And then—

something answered.

Not a voice.

A presence.

Not emerging.

Not crossing.

Acknowledging.

A pressure formed—gentle,dense,heavy with awareness.

The air grew still.

Yan Ming's breath slowed.

Su Qingyue felt it—a weight of someone watching back.

Zhou Shan clutched his robe.

"WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE SOMEONE IS STANDINGRIGHT BEHIND MY THOUGHTS—"

Then the presence shifted.

Focused.

On Lian Hong.

And a voice formed—fractured, layered, but unmistakably human.

"…So the world finally speaks again."

Lian Hong inhaled sharply.

"…You're still here."

A pause.

"Here is… relative."

Lian Hong steadied himself.

"They told me what happened."

Silence stretched.

Then the voice returned—not bitter.

Tired.

"They always tell it cleanlyafter the blood dries."

Yan Ming stiffened, but said nothing.

Lian Hong spoke carefully.

"You weren't erased."

"No," the voice replied."I was contained."

The word carried weight.

"The fracture became my room."

Su Qingyue swallowed hard.

"…How long?"

The presence hesitated.

"Long enoughthat time stopped asking."

Zhou Shan whimpered.

"I DON'T LIKE THAT SENTENCE—"

Lian Hong's shadow stirred faintly—not in agitation.

In recognition.

"…Do you know why the masked one chose you?"

The presence shifted.

"He didn't choose me."

Silence.

"He asked."

Yan Ming's eyes widened.

"…Asked what?"

The presence answered quietly:

"Whether the world deserved to remain unchanged."

Lian Hong felt the fracture hum softly.

"And your answer?"

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"I said I didn't know."

The words echoed.

Not wrong.

Not right.

Honest.

The presence deepened.

"So he gave me the chanceto find out."

Images flickered—not shown,but felt.

Pressure.Confusion.Shadow tearing free.The fracture forming.

"I failed."

Lian Hong shook his head.

"No."

"You weren't given a fair choice."

The presence was quiet for a long time.

Then—

"…You sound like someonewho hasn't paid the price yet."

Lian Hong didn't flinch.

"Maybe."

"But I'm willing to."

The presence focused sharply now.

"Then answer me this."

The fracture pulsed.

The air tightened.

"If the world breaks againbecause of you—will you accept that?"

Su Qingyue inhaled sharply.

Yan Ming watched closely.

Zhou Shan held his breath.

Lian Hong answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

Silence slammed down.

Then—

"…Good."

The presence softened slightly.

"Then you are not me."

The reference point dimmed.

The presence withdrew—not retreating,just receding.

But before it faded completely—

"One more thing," the voice said.

Lian Hong leaned forward slightly.

"What?"

A faint, almost amused pressure brushed the edge of awareness.

"The masked one is watching youwith interest."

Yan Ming exhaled sharply.

Su Qingyue muttered:

"Of course he is."

Zhou Shan whispered:

"I DON'T WANT HIS INTEREST—"

The presence added one final line:

"Do not try to free me yet."

Lian Hong froze.

"…Why?"

The answer came softly.

"Because the fracture is no longer just my prison."

The presence faded.

The chamber returned to stillness.

No alarms sounded.

No seals activated.

Nothing collapsed.

Yan Ming released a breath he'd been holding.

"…That went better than expected."

Su Qingyue wiped her palms against her robes.

"I don't know if 'better' is the word."

Zhou Shan slumped.

"I AGED TEN YEARS—"

Lian Hong opened his eyes.

The fracture beneath them pulsed once—not threatening.

Responsive.

"…He's right," Lian Hong said quietly.

"This isn't ready."

Yan Ming nodded gravely.

"No."

"But now the world knowsyou can speak to what it abandoned."

Lian Hong's shadow stretched slightly—steady.

Aware.

And somewhere beyond the fracture, something long left behind waited.
