Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The Importance of Kei

Kei could clearly feel it, before he successfully treated Kakashi, Hiruzen's kindness toward him stemmed mostly from admiration for his strong Will of Fire.

But after Kei reported Kakashi's condition today, Hiruzen's attitude shifted. Now, in addition to recognizing his ideals, the Third Hokage had also acknowledged his capabilities.

This was precisely the outcome Kei had been aiming for all along.

After all, what leader doesn't want a loyal and competent subordinate?

In the current climate, while Kei had yet to grow to his full potential, Hiruzen was the best possible umbrella to stand under.

The Hyuga Clan's main house was known for being harsh and controlling internally, yet cowardly and submissive when facing external pressure. So long as Kei had the favor of the Third Hokage, the clan wouldn't dare suppress him. On the contrary, they'd likely begin to shower him with benefits.

After chatting a little longer with Kakashi, Kei split off and headed home.

But before he could return to his residence, he sensed someone approaching, Haru.

She stepped forward and said, "The Clan Head and the Grand Elder would like to see you."

Kei nodded and, just like last time, walked alongside her, shoulder to shoulder.

Haru didn't resist. She simply accepted it as natural.

Seeing this, Kei asked, "How have you been these days?"

She stopped for a moment, then replied flatly, "I'm fine."

"That's good." Kei smiled. "I think it's about time we reopen the clinic. I'd like you to continue as my assistant, what do you think?"

"Back when you were around, it made everything so much easier. If you're not by my side now, I'll end up running things like before."

Haru was silent for a moment before responding, "That's your decision. If you want me to assist, go ask Lord Taihiro. I follow orders."

Her words didn't contain approval or rejection, but in Kei's eyes, this was already a quiet yes.

He was pleased. That meant he was nearing the final phase of his plan to win her over completely.

The two didn't speak further on the way. Soon, they entered the clan's assembly hall.

As always, Kei greeted them with courtesy. Hiashi nodded and asked, "Kei, how did it go? Did you complete the Hokage's mission?"

"It went smoothly. The Hokage even praised me and said he hopes I'll continue working under him."

Kei gave a brief overview of the mission and his meeting with Hiruzen.

Taihiro said, "Well done. To be recognized by the Hokage is a great blessing. You must continue to live up to that trust, understand?"

He had initially thought Kei was merely a passable psychologist. But now that even the Third Hokage valued him highly, Kei's importance within the clan had skyrocketed.

Taihiro still vividly recalled the "first bird theory", a concept about sending one clan member to act as a direct liaison with the Hokage.

Now, Kei was the perfect candidate for that role.

Hiashi added with a pleasant smile, "If you ever run into difficulties, remember to turn to the clan. We'll support you however we can."

"Actually, Grand Elder," Kei replied with a modest bow, "there's something I'd like to ask your opinion on. I've been resting for quite some time now, and I'm planning to reopen the clinic."

"It might be too much to handle alone, so I'd like to request permission for Haru to continue as my assistant."

Taihiro was briefly surprised by Kei's initiative, but then his face softened into approval.

"Well, if you are the one asking, how could I say no?" he said warmly.

Turning to Haru, he added, "Haru, from now on, do your best to help Kei however you can."

"Yes, Lord Taihiro." Haru replied respectfully, moving to stand by Kei's side.

Kei could sense her subtle shift, and he was very satisfied. This gesture said more than words.

Hiashi asked, "Kei, is there anything else?"

"Yes, Clan Head," Kei replied. "To complete the mission, I had to travel across nearly half of the Land of Fire with Kakashi. It cost a considerable amount."

"I wouldn't normally trouble you over this, but I suspect Lord Hokage may assign me more such missions in the future…"

Hiashi paused in thought, then said, "That's a valid concern. Very well, go to the clan treasury and withdraw two million ryō. Use it as needed. Come to me again if you run out."

"Thank you, Clan Head, and thank you to the entire clan for your generosity."

Kei's smile blossomed, this kind of support was very real, and very welcome.

Just then, Taihiro spoke again. "Kei, with your expertise in psychology, I have a personal favor to ask."

"Of course, Grand Elder. If it's within my ability, I'll gladly help."

"It's about Neji," Taihiro said, his tone solemn. "As you know, because of what happened back then, he holds some… misunderstandings about the clan."

"You mean you want me to correct Neji's mindset?"

"Exactly," Taihiro nodded. "No matter what's happened, we're family. And there's no room for resentment in a family."

"I'd like you to help Neji understand the clan's love and concern for him."

Hearing this talk of "family," Kei nearly laughed aloud.

Taihiro's ability to lie with a straight face was truly maxed out.

Why did Neji harbor resentment?

Wasn't it because Hyuga Hizashi died in place of Hiashi?

And, of course, because of the Caged Bird Seal.

Kei didn't show his disgust. Instead, he kept smiling and said, "Rest assured, Grand Elder. I'll do my best to help Neji see the love his family holds for him and correct his misguided views."

"Much appreciated, Kei." Taihiro was pleased with Kei's quick agreement.

"Clan Head, Grand Elder, if there's nothing else, I'll take my leave. I just returned from a long trip and I'm feeling rather tired."

Seeing his dusty, travel-worn appearance, both Hiashi and Taihiro gave him a few final words of encouragement and waved him off.

Kei bowed politely, tapped his cane against the floor, and left the assembly hall.

Haru watched him go, then prepared to head to the treasury to retrieve the funds.

But just as she was about to step away, Taihiro suddenly said:

"Haru, when Kei begins working with Neji, make sure you're there. Pay close attention. I want you to observe everything he says and does, and report back to me."

Haru's footsteps froze.

"…Yes, Lord Taihiro."
