The next day, on the drive home, I kept my voice quiet. "Jade did not come to school again."
That makes four days in a row she has been absent. My dad said her mom called each time to let him know. She left messages in our group chat. Rose and Nadia think she is just sick, like Jade says, but I think it is something worse. Something she does not want to talk about.
"I am worried," I said, smoothing my hands over my shorts, waiting for Anderson to say something. But she told us all she was fine.
She told us we did not need to visit when Rose suggested the girls all go to her house this weekend. Anderson slowed the car down a little. I did not mind his slower pace. It meant more time with him.
"Would it be wrong to go see her?" I asked.
Cars rushed past us in a blur, stirring up a breeze that played with my hair. I rested my head against the window and closed my eyes.
