The cathedral continued to rise.
Stone groaned beneath the earth as towers climbed into the crimson heavens, casting shadows over what remained of Lumina City. Every bell rang with a slow, mournful rhythm that echoed through the Domain, each toll carrying a strange pressure that settled over every hunter's heart.
No one spoke.
Even the three Executioners remained motionless, standing like ancient guardians before a sacred place.
The lone figure seated atop the highest spire slowly stood.
Its white robes drifted without wind, while the golden crown above its hidden face radiated a soft light that contrasted sharply with the darkness surrounding the cathedral.
Kairen narrowed his eyes.
"That's not the Sovereign."
The Burden answered immediately.
Not with words.
With certainty.
The being before him was powerful.
Dangerously so.
But it was still beneath the presence that had spoken to the entire world.
Daniel stepped beside him.
"So... that's the Herald?"
Kairen nodded once.
"I think so."
The Herald raised one hand.
The bells stopped.
The entire city fell into absolute silence.
Then, without moving its lips, its voice spread across the Domain.
"Welcome..."
"...Hunters."
Unlike the Keepers, its voice carried warmth.
Almost compassion.
"I have watched your species struggle against inevitability."
"You have exceeded every prediction."
It slowly descended from the cathedral, each step creating invisible platforms beneath its feet.
When it finally reached the ruined street, it stood only twenty meters from the strike force.
No hostility.
No aggression.
Only observation.
"I am Seraph."
"The First Herald of Finality."
Rowan tightened his grip on his sword.
"You've got a name."
Seraph inclined its head.
"So do you."
The statement unsettled everyone.
It wasn't mocking.
It was respectful.
Daniel frowned.
"If you're here to fight..."
Seraph gently shook its head.
"I am here to witness."
"Witness what?" Sera asked.
"The moment humanity chooses."
Kairen stepped forward.
"We already have."
Seraph turned toward him.
"No."
"You have only delayed your answer."
The Herald extended one hand toward the towering cathedral.
"Beyond these doors rests the Heart of this Domain."
"It is neither weapon..."
"...nor prison."
"It is a possibility."
The crimson sky trembled faintly.
"If you destroy it..."
"The Domain will collapse."
"The civilians imprisoned within it will awaken."
Hope spread through the gathered hunters.
Then Seraph continued.
"But..."
"...another Domain will immediately mature somewhere else."
The hope disappeared.
"If you leave it untouched..."
"Lumina City will vanish forever."
Silence returned.
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"So..."
"Either way people suffer?"
Seraph nodded.
"Such is balance."
Kairen's expression remained calm.
"You created this."
"No."
"We maintain it."
"There's no difference."
"There is."
Seraph looked directly into Kairen's eyes.
"You believe endings are failures."
"We understand they are necessary."
The Burden pulsed painfully.
Kairen suddenly saw fragments of distant worlds.
Civilizations.
Countless civilizations.
Some destroyed by endless war.
Others consumed by greed.
Some by monsters.
Some by their own creations.
Each one eventually reached a single moment.
Finality.
The visions disappeared.
Kairen stumbled backward.
Daniel caught him.
"What did you see?"
"...Worlds."
Seraph lowered its hand.
"You now understand why the Keepers exist."
Kairen slowly steadied himself.
"No."
He looked back at the Herald.
"I understand why you think you should exist."
For the first time...
Seraph paused.
"You distinguish purpose from justification."
"I do."
"Interesting."
The Herald smiled beneath the shadow of its crown.
"You resemble the First Hunter."
Every person present froze.
Kairen's heartbeat quickened.
"The..."
"...First Hunter?"
Seraph turned toward the cathedral.
"Long before your history..."
"Long before Ruin..."
"There was another."
One of the cathedral's massive doors slowly opened.
Golden light poured into the ruined city.
Inside...
Ancient murals covered endless walls.
Images of worlds.
Stars.
Battles.
And one lone figure carrying a blade wrapped in black-and-red flames.
The figure's face was missing.
Erased.
Only the weapon remained.
The Oathblade.
Kairen instinctively gripped his sword.
It vibrated.
Not violently.
Like recognition.
Seraph spoke quietly.
"He rejected Finality."
"He hunted the Keepers."
"He reached the Sovereign."
Daniel looked between the murals and Kairen.
"What happened?"
The Herald's voice became softer.
"He failed."
The words echoed through the cathedral.
"And because he failed..."
"The Ruin was born."
Every hunter stared in stunned silence.
Eli's voice suddenly crackled through the communicator, weak but audible.
"Kairen..."
"We finally translated the oldest Architect records."
His breathing was uneven.
"They match what the Herald is saying."
"The Ruin..."
"...was never the original enemy."
Kairen felt the world shift beneath him.
Everything humanity believed.
Every war.
Every sacrifice.
Every Hunter.
Had begun because of something far older than the Ruin itself.
Seraph stepped aside, revealing the cathedral entrance.
"The Heart awaits."
"You may destroy it."
"You may preserve it."
"Or..."
The Herald looked directly at Kairen.
"...you may seek a fourth answer."
Daniel blinked.
"There are only three choices."
Seraph smiled faintly.
"That..."
"...is why the Sovereign invited only him."
The three Executioners slowly moved aside, opening a path toward the cathedral.
None of them attacked.
None of them raised their weapons.
The road was clear.
Kairen looked at his companions.
Then at the endless cathedral beyond.
Finally, he spoke.
"If Finality believes every choice has already been counted..."
He rested the Oathblade across his shoulder.
"...then we'll give it one that has never existed."
Without another word, Kairen walked toward the cathedral.
Daniel, Rowan, Sera, and the strike teams followed immediately.
Not because they had been ordered.
Because they had chosen to.
Seraph watched them disappear into the golden light.
Above, the bells rang once more.
Far beyond the Domain, in the cathedral of dead stars, the Sovereign slowly opened another of its countless eyes.
For the first time in ages, the ancient ruler leaned forward upon its throne.
The game had reached a point no prophecy had foreseen.
And deep within the Heart of the First Domain, something older than both the Keepers and the Ruin stirred from an endless sleep.
