The moment Kairen crossed the cathedral's threshold, the world behind him disappeared.
There was no sensation of movement.
No shift in gravity.
One step carried him from the ruined streets of Lumina City into an endless hall that stretched farther than sight itself.
The floor beneath his boots reflected the crimson sky like polished glass, yet every reflection showed a different version of himself. In one, he wore the uniform of an ordinary hunter. In another, black-red flames consumed his entire body. In another, he stood alone upon a mountain of broken weapons.
None of them smiled.
Daniel entered beside him, instinctively reaching for his daggers.
"What is this place?"
His voice echoed once.
Then vanished, swallowed by the cathedral itself.
The rest of the strike force emerged one after another. Rowan's massive footsteps should have thundered across the hall, yet they made no sound. Sera's breathing became visible in the cold air despite the unnatural warmth surrounding them.
Ahead, golden pillars rose endlessly toward a ceiling hidden by darkness.
Between them stood thousands of statues.
Not carved from stone.
Frozen in time.
Hunters.
Kings.
Children.
Warriors wearing armor unlike anything recorded in human history.
Each one faced the same direction.
Toward the cathedral's center.
Eli slowly approached the nearest statue through the projection on his drone feed, which somehow still functioned within the Domain.
"These aren't from Earth..."
Kairen examined a towering warrior whose body was covered in crystal-like armor.
"No."
The Burden pulsed.
"They're from worlds that came before us."
Silence spread through the group.
The realization settled over them like a mountain.
These civilizations had existed.
Fought.
Dreamed.
Lived.
Now all that remained were silent witnesses.
Daniel looked down the endless hall.
"Did Finality destroy them?"
A calm voice answered from ahead.
"No."
Seraph emerged between the pillars, walking with measured steps.
"They destroyed themselves."
Rowan narrowed his eyes.
"Convenient answer."
Seraph stopped before one of the statues—a woman holding the hand of a small child.
"They chose endless conflict over difficult peace."
The image shimmered.
The hunters suddenly saw the world the statue came from.
Towering cities.
Brilliant technology.
Then...
War.
Not against monsters.
Against themselves.
The skies burned.
Oceans boiled.
The civilization collapsed before Finality ever arrived.
The vision faded.
Seraph walked to another statue.
"This world sought immortality."
Another vision unfolded.
Scientists.
Kings.
Empires.
No one died.
No one yielded.
Generations accumulated without end.
Resources vanished.
Hope withered.
Eventually the world became a prison where life could no longer change.
Another collapse.
Another ending.
The Herald turned toward Kairen.
"Every civilization believes it will be different."
Kairen didn't answer.
Seraph continued walking.
"But every civilization eventually arrives here."
The endless hall began changing.
The statues moved aside.
Golden light poured through the opening they created.
At the center of the cathedral floated an enormous crystal suspended above a bottomless abyss.
It was the size of a mountain.
Within it flowed countless streams of light.
Each stream contained images.
Lives.
Cities.
Entire histories.
Daniel stared upward.
"...That's the Heart?"
Seraph nodded.
"The Heart of the First Domain."
"It records every possible future."
Sera stepped closer.
"And Lumina City?"
The Herald raised one hand.
Inside the crystal, the city appeared.
The civilians were there.
Frozen in place.
Time itself had stopped for them.
"They still live."
Hope flickered across every hunter's face.
Kairen, however, felt something else.
The Burden.
It wasn't reacting to the crystal.
It was reacting to what lay beneath it.
He looked over the edge of the abyss.
Darkness.
Absolute darkness.
Then...
A heartbeat.
Slow.
Ancient.
Alive.
The Oathblade vibrated violently.
Everyone heard it.
A deep metallic hum echoed through the cathedral.
Seraph's expression changed for the first time.
Surprise.
"It has awakened."
The abyss answered.
A pulse erupted from below, shaking the entire cathedral.
The crystal above cracked.
Not shattered.
Cracked.
Thin black lines spread across its surface.
Daniel took a step back.
"What was that?"
Kairen stared into the darkness.
"Something..."
"...is under the Heart."
The abyss suddenly filled with crimson light.
Massive chains emerged from the darkness.
There were thousands of them.
Each thicker than a skyscraper.
Each covered in ancient symbols that glowed with fading black-and-red energy.
The hunters looked upward in disbelief.
The chains didn't hold the crystal.
They descended into the darkness below.
Holding something imprisoned.
Seraph slowly lowered its head.
"So..."
"It truly remained."
The Burden surged through Kairen's body with such force that he nearly fell to one knee.
Fragments of memory flooded his mind.
A lone hunter standing against an army of Keepers.
A blade striking the heavens.
Chains forged from sacrifice.
A voice that sounded impossibly familiar.
"If I cannot end Finality..."
"Then I will bind what lies beyond it."
Kairen gasped.
The vision ended.
Daniel caught his shoulder.
"What did you see?"
Before Kairen could answer...
The chains trembled.
One snapped.
The sound echoed like the breaking of the world itself.
The crystal above dimmed.
The cathedral shook violently.
Far beyond the Domain, every Finality Domain across Earth pulsed simultaneously.
Director Vale stared at the global map in horror.
"No..."
Every red marker doubled.
Analysts shouted over one another.
"The Domains are multiplying!"
"Energy levels have exceeded every projection!"
Another officer looked up from his console, his face completely drained of color.
"We've found the source."
The image appeared on every screen.
It wasn't inside Lumina City.
It was beneath it.
Thousands of meters below the earth.
An object larger than the city itself.
Sleeping.
Bound.
Ancient.
Vale whispered a name she had only seen once in the oldest surviving records.
"The Prison of the First Hunter..."
Back inside the cathedral, a second chain snapped.
The abyss erupted with blinding crimson light.
Then...
A colossal hand emerged from the darkness.
Not skeletal.
Not monstrous.
Human.
Its fingers alone were larger than mountains.
Ancient scars covered its skin, glowing with the same black-and-red energy that flowed through Kairen's Burden.
Every hunter instinctively stepped backward.
Even Seraph remained motionless.
The Herald's quiet voice echoed through the cathedral.
"The First Hunter..."
"...was never buried."
The massive hand slowly closed into a fist.
The entire cathedral trembled.
Then, from the endless darkness below, two brilliant crimson eyes opened.
They were not filled with rage.
They were filled with exhaustion.
A deep voice echoed through every corner of the cathedral.
"So..."
"...humanity finally found me."
Kairen felt the Burden resonate with the voice.
Not in fear.
Not in defiance.
But in recognition.
Whatever slept beneath the Heart...
Had once carried the same burden he now bore.
