Lorelei moved to intervene, but Reed had already lifted the drowsy Romano into his arms.
Her protest caught in her throat before she could voice it. Within seconds, he had vanished, leaving her facing the shut door.
Only when she heard the click of the latch did rage contort her expression.
She pressed her palm against her pounding temples, fury etched across her face.
'Jenifer will regret this,' she seethed internally. Her mind replayed Reed's earlier behavior. 'He's obviously not prepared to abandon Jenifer. I must devise a strategy to destroy their bond permanently. Only then will I be able to wed him.'

I cradled Romano as I exited Lorelei's hospital room and entered the elevator.
The elevator dropped to the second floor. As the doors parted, I spotted Jenifer positioned directly before me.
