Chapter 9 - CHAPTER NINE — THE FIRST MOVE

The station air felt heavier than the night outside—thick, unmoving, charged like the seconds before a storm breaks. Aisha pressed her back against the cold pillar, her breath shallow, her eyes locked on the three hooded figures closing in.

Daniel stepped forward, body angled protectively, fists clenched.

"Daniel," the man in the center said calmly, "don't make this difficult."

Aisha felt her skin prickle. That voice wasn't threatening—it was confident. Familiar to Daniel. Personal.

Daniel didn't respond. His silence said enough.

The man continued, "You know the rules. You walk away from us, we collect what you owe."

His gaze slid to Aisha.

"And we take whatever you care about most."

Aisha's knees almost gave out.

Daniel immediately moved in front of her. "You won't touch her."

A soft laugh came from the second figure. "You're in no position to make demands."

The sound echoed off the empty walls—sharp, mocking.

Aisha could feel it now: the shift in Daniel's breathing, the tension in his shoulders. He wasn't afraid for himself. He was afraid for her.

The man raised his hand.

Aisha's pulse spiked.

Daniel whispered without looking back, "Aisha… when I say run, you run."

Her hands trembled. "I'm not leaving you."

"You won't have a choice," he said through clenched teeth.

The figures stepped closer—synchronized, steady, trained. They weren't thugs. They weren't random stalkers. They moved like people who had done this many times before.

The leader tilted his head. "Daniel. Last chance."

Daniel inhaled sharply.

Then—

He moved.

Not toward them… but grabbing Aisha's hand and yanking her sideways as a metal maintenance door slammed open beside them.

A man in a high-visibility jacket stepped into the station with a toolbox in hand, humming softly—completely unaware of the danger in front of him.

All three hooded figures froze.

Daniel didn't.

"Now!" he hissed.

Aisha barely had time to react before Daniel pushed her through the maintenance doorway, pulling it shut behind them just as the humming worker turned around, confused.

The hooded figures remained still—unable to act. Too many cameras. Too much light. Too many witnesses.

Aisha pressed a hand to her chest. "Daniel… what now?"

Daniel gripped her shoulders, eyes burning with urgency.

"Now? We run. And we don't look back."

But behind the thin metal door, three silhouettes stood waiting.

And none of them had taken a single step away.
