Chapter 5 - A Second Chance

A Second Chance

Sally and Jayden were ready to walk out of the conference room of the Brii family. However, the old man's words had made the two stop in their tracks. He threatened to kick Jayden out and revoke his right as heir of the family head position. Sam had also threatened to divorce her if she really walked out of those doors.

She knew Sam very well. When he said something, he never regretted it, neither did he ever go back on it, so his blatant threat was real if she was courageous enough to test him.

As the current head of the Brii family, Sam had equal say as the old man sitting next to him.

Sally turned back but didn't look at the two men. She had thought that the issue wasn't that serious. However, seeing the two looking at her, she was flustered. She knew she had messed up great time.

If she left her husband, Sally knew that life would not be as great as anyone else would think.

Over many years, the two have been together. Sam had spared too much resources to save and make sure her family stayed comfortable and happy.

He paid for his sibling's college education, built her parents a home and even gave some of her relative's jobs in his family company.

With the attitude she had shown just now, it was clear that, like they say, she was biting off the hand that fed her.

This was very dangerous. If her husband did not support her against the whole of the Brii family, what hope would she have? For the first time, she regretted her own actions and her poor upbringing towards her son.

Sam felt empty inside. He didn't want to lose his wife and disown his own son at the same time.

However, he didn't have a choice. If things came to that, he would not show mercy to Jayden as this would be his hardest lesson in his life. This would surely make him turn a new leaf.

"Dad, we are sorry for everything," Jayden started, but his father raised his hand then stopped him.

He looked at him pitifully and felt the remorse of his son.

He was touched. He then glanced at his wife and said, "These are our personal matters, we will deal with them later as a family. Now what we need to do is address the current issues," he turned and looked at his father.

The old man, understanding what his son meant, with the gesture, nodded and then cleared his throat.

"Listen here and listen carefully. From today, Jayden Brii will still remain as the first-in-line heir of the family," the other members of the family wore conflicted looks.

"Dad, why?" a man shouted from the side.

The old man raised his hand and the man stopped speaking. He then said, "Please let me finish," before continuing. The man sat back with a reluctant expression.

"However, the next two months are going to be a test for you. If you fail, you will lose this chance and never have the chance to reclaim it in the future. I am going to evaluate your lifestyle and work ethics. If you don't satisfy me in two months, everyone bear witness. I will surely keep my promise to you, young man, be very careful in the future if you ever had a dream of leading this family in the future. Not only that, if you fail to, I will also punish you myself by my own means and believe me I am capable of more than you can imagine ask your father," the old man smiled mysteriously as he finished his speech.

That smile sent a shiver down Jayden's body.

"Anyone with any objections?" the old man asked.

He turned to the person who had complained earlier and asked, "What do you think, Jimmy?"

This was Jimmy Brii, his last-born son and his most treasured kin. The old man had even once declared that he was only alive because of his son, so everyone who knew him well understood what son he meant. When his wife unfortunately died, she had just given birth to this boy, so it was the last memory he had of his late wife, whom he loved very much.

Sam was a hardworking man. Everything he had now, including his position in the family, was all because of his determined and ambitious nature.

During the fight for family head then, all the three sons and one daughter of Mr. Garrison Brii highly sought for this position.

However, when it came to the real competition, everyone stepped down for Sam. It was not because they feared being defeated or shamed by their older brother however the truth was, Sam was capable. No one else in the family felt worthy of matching him.

Everything the Brii family has now is all because of the painstaking effort of one person, Sam.

He has both brains and brawn and the drive to get things done.

The Brii Corporation could dine with the upper class all because of him. This was the reason why, before, when he was arguing with his wife, no one dared interrupt.

This was also the reason why Sally felt the immense pressure and danger when she saw that she had lost her husband's support.

Mr. Garrison Brii, for the deep love he harbored for his last-born son, he also wanted him to be the family head. However, he was also convinced by Sam's abilities. So right now, that he had noticed the displeasure of his favorite son, he wanted to hear his view on the matter.

"Dad, I am very pleased with your decision, but there are other capable young grandsons of yours who have better ethics and mutual understanding of the business than Jayden, so I hope later we will not dwell on one aspect of the matter to tackle the rest."

"OK son, I understand, do not worry. As a family, we should give family members a second chance. Hope you will not blow it up, Jayden," the old man said, eying Jayden sharply.

Jayden stood up and bowed to his grandfather and said, "Thank you Grandfather, from now on I will change for the best."

The old man smiled and said, "Jayden, you don't need to change, the only thing you need to do is correct your ways and follow the better path."

"Thank you, grandpa, I will not fail you," he said, bowing down again.

"OK then, this meeting is over, let's get back to business," the old man announced and got up. He patted Sam's shoulder and left as his secretary followed behind.

All the others rose up one after the other and said goodbye to Sam as they exited the room. Soon only, the Sam family was left,

Ama rose up and was about to say goodbye to her father and leave when his mother called out.

"Baby girl, please wait," she then stood and walked around to her.

Ama stood with her father, looking at her mother's approach.

Sally reached her and gently caressed her chin as she said, "Hope you can forgive Mommy dear girl, I know I was wrong."

"Mom, I am not a child anymore." This was the first time Ama had spoken.

She still looked emotionless as she glared at the woman in front of her.

"I know baby girl, but please..." She was about to touch her again when Ama moved back.

She then turned and glanced at her father. Sam smiled at her daughter and then said to all three, "Let's get home first, it seems we need to set new rules." He then grabbed her daughter's hand and the two walked out under the glance of the other two.

Sally looked helplessly at her son. She beckoned him to follow, and the two also left the room.

As they walked through the door, Jayden glanced back and smirked coldly. Anyone who had seen him in the conference room being berated and lowering himself just now would be shocked.

He then frowned slowly as the door slammed behind him.

"I don't need any of you, it's just that you are all too valuable for my next scheme," he thought.
