Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Afraid I Still Have Feelings for You

Serena didn't nod, nor did she shake her head. She simply drew Cookie closer into her arms, protective like a mother shielding her child.

"Sorry, she's a little afraid of strangers."

Adrian glanced at her, voice unhurried as he remarked, "Not like you, then."

How not like her?

The cat's shy of strangers; is she supposed to fear people she knows?

Serena blinked slowly, her lashes thick and long, but didn't respond.

After a brief silence, the elevator glided smoothly to their floor, and with a chime, the doors slid open to either side.

The space was no longer enclosed; the little cat seemed to sense the danger dispersing beyond, and settled down obediently.

Serena felt a hint of relief and prepared to step out. Yet the man stood motionless, with no intention of leaving the car.

He was tall and broad, standing in the middle like a solid wall—impossible to overlook.

This wasn't her home. Since he wasn't moving, she couldn't well shove him out.
