Chapter 8 - Passive Evolution

It was Alexios who stepped in first, bravely facing the flying insect head-on. He went in front of the wasp's flight path, ready to introduce his sword to the incoming pest.

He's going to kill it himself!

It was unstoppable. It was ready to deliver its sting to Alexios' face, and he was set to execute it there, end its life for everyone to see. But he was pushed aside, and he stumbled on the floor. In his place is Jared, the bowl-cut boy with a swollen lump on his head.

Jared, you stupid kid!

Jared readied his hammer, prepared to swing it on the insect. His stance was pathetic; his legs were shaking. Nonetheless, he was going to slam the hammer on the wasp's head. Sort of. Until he decided not to, he jumped where he pushed Alexios off, landing on top of the Redvine kid.

You coward, why go through all that?!

Then Stella found herself in the flight path. She was running around, trying to avoid the giant insect as much as she could. But she found a random pen on the ground, and she had the urge to pocket it. Instead of resuming her run, she just stood there, frozen and screaming.

Stupid, run!

While I was reacting to them, I didn't realize Bella had climbed a table and jumped from one table to another. She reached Stella as fast as she could, even to the point of stepping on top of Jared. She stood in front of the young kleptomaniac in distress and readied her weapon, a butter knife: me.

I could see the wasp coming at me. Its stinger pre-spurting some of its goo.

Oh, good gods!

But I heard Bella squeal. She immediately changed her mind and grabbed Stella by the arm, pulling them both down under a table, hiding in cowardice.

Is anybody going to take down the insect?!

The insect buzzed by, leaving a trail of hissing goo behind. It was flying somewhere in the room, tormenting other young apprentices. I could still hear the hurried footsteps, flipped tables, and panicked screaming.

"Are you hurt?" Bella asked Stella, comforting her.

Stella hugged her savior. "Thank you so much!" she cried, snot running down her face. Hopefully, none of it smeared on Bella or me.

To the side, not far from us, I heard Alexios push Jared off him. "You fool! I could've had it!" he said, sitting up and caressing his head. He was crushed by a kid three times his size after all.

Jared fell to the side with a thud. "I'm sorry," his mouth was pressed against the floor, his voice was muffled. He then farted.

"You're disgusting and miserable!" Bella told Jared off, "Alexios could've killed it!"

Jared could only groan in response. But Alexios glared at Bella, "You hesitated, too!"

Bella winced, she was taken aback, and she didn't know what to say. But Stella quickly glanced at Alexios, "Shut up! She saved my life!" she barked.

Alexios flinched, intimidated by Stella's energy. He clicked his tongue and grabbed his sword, "Whatever,"

Is anyone going to kill the wasp?!

Bella jerked out her head to see where the wasp was, she had me out pointing her general peripheral just in case.

There, I saw the insect fly rapidly towards Master Lucy. She stood beside the podium, where the box was, with her arms crossed and a relaxed posture.

Look out!

Master Lucy smirked and stretched her arm out, reaching for the wasp. Then the insect slowed down until it hovered just a few inches from her palms. The flying monstrosity morphed into a javelin, drifted horizontally on the master's hand.

It was a Beastblade. Its shaft was metallic, engraved in silver, and it had an enlarged, textured grip. The steel head has a sharp golden tip. It was glowing a faint red, pulsing like a heartbeat; it was alive.

Was that the wasp?!

"Did I surprise you? It was my Beastblade all along! I'm not allowed to bring a monster from the Darkwild in a first-year apprentice class; it's dangerous! But it was a demonstration of the passive skill that we were talking about: the summon ability!

Master Lucy's personality completely changed as she explained her ridiculous plot to trick the apprentice. I thought it was too far for an instructor. I watched her wipe drool from the side of her mouth.

This woman's crazy! Every instructor in this school is nuts!

The apprentices slowly and carefully gathered. They help each other from the wreckage that they caused. Bella and Stella were cautious as they joined the crowd.

"I don't think that's what passive means," Alexios begrudgingly said, his face frowning, teeth gritted.

Master Lucy chuckled, "But it is! The summon ability is constant! It doesn't require much!"

So, can Bella summon me anytime?

"But Grand Master Lupin said summoning our Beastblade requires a soul!" Alexios tightened his grip on his Beastblade.

"Yes," Master Lucy smirked, "Your soul!"

The class stood in silence. They looked at each other, and they thought the master was just pulling another trick. But there was no punchline.

"The Darkwild is not the only place where you can harvest a soul. Any soul is fine for your Beastblade. This next lesson, my dear apprentices, is all about summoning the beast inside the blade!"

She's teaching these kids about affinities and summoning? Is this still one class?

"To feed the Beastblade your soul, you must open yourself for it! Give it the keys to your soul!" Master Lucy, excited and almost perverted, appeared pleased by it.

"How?" Alexios asked.

Master Lucy licked her lips, "Give the beast your blood," then she swiped her palm on her javelin's sharp golden tip. Her palms quickly opened up. It wasn't deep, but the blood trickled down the steel.

The apprentices watched in horror as Master Lucy moaned and laughed at the sight of feeding her javelin with her blood. Then, she puts her wounded hand on the grip, holding it tight. Soon, her blood drained, the Beastblade sipped it all in. Then it let out a faint, pulsating red light.

"Now, it's your turn!" she points at the class, smiling wickedly.
