Chapter 21 - The Moment He Finally Broke

Adrian dragged himself up from the concrete before Mia could even reach him. His brother's attack had left dust on his clothes, a streak of blood near his eyebrow, but his eyes—those cold, controlled eyes—were burning with a fury Mia had never seen before. She ran toward him. "Adrian, stop, you're hurt—" He held up a hand. "Mia, stay behind me." She shook her head. "I'm not leaving you alone with him again." His brother stood near the railing, breathing unevenly, eyes unfocused yet frighteningly sharp. "You didn't fall," he muttered, tilting his head like a curious child. "You always land on your feet. That's why you always win." Adrian wiped the blood from his face, his jaw ticking. "This ends now." His brother stepped forward slowly. "You can't end what was broken years ago." "Watch me," Adrian said, voice low. Mia stood directly behind him, gripping the back of his shirt tightly. She hated how her hands trembled, she hated that she wasn't strong enough to pull him away from danger, but she stayed close, refusing to let him fight alone. His brother's gaze flickered to her. "Why does she matter so much?" Adrian moved instantly, blocking the view. "Don't look at her." "Why?" his brother asked. "Because she's the new replacement? The new obsession? The new shield?" Adrian's voice cracked. "She is nothing like anyone from the past." "Then why does she make you afraid?" Adrian didn't answer. His brother smiled. "Because you know one thing, don't you? You always destroy the ones you try to protect." Mia stepped forward despite Adrian's silent warning. "You're wrong." Both men froze. Adrian grabbed her wrist, whispering urgently, "Mia, stop." But she didn't. She moved next to him, her voice shaking yet unwavering. "He didn't destroy me. He saved me. Every single time." Adrian's breath caught. His brother watched her closely, eyes narrowing. "You think he cares for you? You think you're safe because he stands in front of you?" "I know I'm safe," Mia said, "because he doesn't run from danger. Not even now." Adrian exhaled shakily, something breaking inside him. His brother looked almost fascinated. "You trust him." "Yes," Mia whispered. "More than anyone." His brother tilted his head. "Trust him enough to die for him?" Adrian's eyes widened. "Enough," he growled. But Mia didn't flinch. "If that's what it takes," Mia whispered, "then yes." Adrian snapped. "MIA!" His voice echoed across the rooftop, raw and desperate. Before he could pull her back, his brother lunged again, this time not at Adrian—at her. Adrian slammed into him with so much force both staggered. Mia stumbled back, her heart in her throat. Adrian shoved his brother away from her with a strength fueled by pure panic. "DON'T YOU TOUCH HER!" His brother laughed like it was a game. "So she is the weakness." "She's the reason you won't win," Adrian snapped. The wind roared between them as his brother lunged again. Adrian blocked the hit, twisted his arm, and pinned him against the concrete edge. His brother gasped but smiled even as he struggled. "You think pinning me down will fix anything?" "No," Adrian said, breathing hard. "But it will buy time." His brother's smile faded. "Time for what?" "For them to arrive." Almost on cue, heavy footsteps thundered up the emergency stairwell—the sound of multiple guards rushing upward. His brother's eyes widened. "You planned this—" "I warned you," Adrian said, voice breaking. "This ends today." Security burst onto the roof. Adrian stepped back as two guards seized his brother. The restrained man didn't fight. He only stared at Adrian. "You think locking me up will stop this?" "Yes," Adrian said simply. "Because you won't come near her again." His brother's gaze slid to Mia one last time. "She'll never be safe." "She will," Adrian said, "as long as I breathe." Security dragged him toward the stairwell. His laughter echoed, but Adrian didn't flinch. Only when the door shut did the rooftop finally fall silent. Mia rushed to Adrian. "Adrian—your head—" He caught her wrists gently as she touched his wound. "I'm fine." "You're bleeding!" she insisted. "Sit down—please—" But instead of sitting, Adrian pulled her into his arms, holding her so tightly she lost her breath. "Don't ever do that again," he whispered into her hair. "Don't ever step in front of him. Don't ever risk yourself for me like that." Mia's voice trembled. "I couldn't let you stand alone." "I don't care," he said, pulling back just enough to look into her eyes. "If something happened to you—I'd never recover." Her breath caught. His voice was breaking, raw and unguarded. "Mia," Adrian whispered, "you don't understand what you mean to me." She placed a trembling hand on his cheek. "Then tell me." Adrian's eyes closed for a second, like holding her was the only thing keeping him together. When he opened them, there was no coldness left. No distance. Only truth. "I almost lost you today," he whispered. "And I realized something—I can't live through that fear again. Not with you." Her heart pounded so loudly she thought he could hear it. "Adrian…" He leaned his forehead against hers. "You matter more than you should. More than I ever planned." She didn't pull away. She didn't breathe. She simply whispered, "Then don't pretend you don't care." Adrian let out a broken exhale—the kind that came only from a man who had been holding everything in for too long. "I'm done pretending." His voice was barely a breath. "Mia, I want you." The words hit her harder than the wind, harder than the danger, harder than fear. She closed her eyes. "Then don't let go." "I won't," he said. "Not anymore." The rooftop around them felt suddenly small, quiet, intimate—no threat, no shadows, no lies. Just the truth finally breaking free. To be continued.
