Chapter 23 - The Line He Shouldn’t Have Crossed

Mia didn't remember how she and Adrian got off the roof.Everything after the struggle felt like a blur—security flooding the stairwell, officers pulling Adrian's brother away, the emergency lockdown lifting, and the helicopter lights sweeping the rooftop like a crime scene.

But she remembered Adrian's face.

The moment he caught her hand right before she slipped. The way he held her as if losing her would destroy him.The tremble in his voice when he whispered, "I've got you."

Now they were inside the highest private lounge of the building. A quiet, dim room meant for executives, but the space felt too cold, too silent, and too small for the storm inside her chest.

Adrian stood by the window, shirt torn at the shoulder, knuckles scraped, breathing slightly uneven. He hadn't sat down once since they entered. He hadn't even looked at her.

Mia finally gathered enough courage to speak.

"Adrian… talk to me."

He didn't turn. "You should go home."

She froze. "Home?"

"Yes."

"That's it? After everything that happened, you want me to leave?"

"You'll be safer away from me," Adrian said.

There was something wrong in his voice—too flat, too controlled, the complete opposite of the man who held onto her with desperate fear minutes earlier.

Mia stepped closer. "Don't do this."

"I'm not doing anything," Adrian said sharply. "I'm trying to give you distance."

"I don't want distance."

He finally turned, and for the first time she saw it—fear. Not for himself. For her.

"I almost lost you," Adrian said quietly. "Do you understand that? If I had been one second late—"

"But you weren't," Mia cut in. "You saved me."

"That's not the point."

"Then what is?"

Adrian took a step toward her, shutting the space between them.

"You were on a rooftop corner with a man who wants you dead," he said. "Because of me. Because of my past. Because I let you get close."

Mia swallowed. "You didn't let me. I chose to."

"That's why I'm ending this," Adrian said.

Her heart dropped.

"No," she whispered. "Don't say that."

Adrian looked away, struggling. "I can't drag you into my life. You saw tonight what it looks like. You saw who comes after me. I refuse to make you part of that."

"You already did," Mia said. "When you pulled me into the elevator. When you protected me. When you stayed awake all night. When you told me I mattered."

Adrian flinched.

"And now you want to walk away?" she said softly. "After everything?"

"It's not what I want," Adrian whispered. "It's what's safe."

Mia stepped forward until they were almost touching.

"I don't care about safe. I care about you."

Adrian closed his eyes, as if the words cut him open.

"Mia… don't."

"Why? Because you care too?"

His silence answered her.

She waited.

He breathed out, defeated. "You do not understand how dangerous I am to be around."

"You are not dangerous to me."

His eyes snapped open.

"You don't know what I've done."

"Then tell me."

He shook his head, stepping back… but she grabbed his hand.

"Adrian. Look at me."

He stopped.

"I'm still here," she said softly. "I'm not running. And I won't run unless you push me away."

He finally looked at her—really looked—and the pain in his eyes made her chest ache.

"Mia… I crossed a line tonight."

"What line?"

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"The moment you slipped, the moment I thought you were falling…"He paused, swallowing hard."I realized losing you would destroy me."

Mia's breath trembled.

"And that's exactly why I need you far away from my life," Adrian said. "I'm not stable when it comes to you. I can't think clearly. I can't make rational choices. I become someone reckless. Someone dangerous."

She shook her head. "No. That's not danger. That's care."

"Mia—"

"No. Listen to me."

She stepped closer again, gripping his hands tightly.

"You're pushing me away because you're scared of how much you feel. Not because of danger."

He didn't answer, but his pulse jumped under her fingers.

"Adrian," she whispered, "you don't get to decide what I fear. You don't get to decide what I choose. And I choose to stay."

Something inside him cracked.

"Mia… I am trying to protect you."

"Then don't do it by breaking my heart."

The room fell silent.

He stared at her, breathing unevenly, fighting something internal—something strong enough to make him close his eyes again, as if the truth burned too close.

Finally he spoke, his voice low and raw.

"I don't want to let you go."

"Then don't."

He opened his eyes. And for the first time all night, he didn't hide anything.

Not the fear. Not the longing. Not the vulnerability he never allowed anyone to see.

"Mia…" Adrian began slowly. "If you stay with me, there will be consequences."

"I know."

"You will be targeted."

"I know."

"You will be watched."

"I know."

"You may have to face things you're not prepared for."

Mia held his gaze. "Then prepare me."

He exhaled shakily.

"Mia… once you step into my life, there is no going back."

She nodded. "I already stepped in the moment you caught my hand."

Adrian swallowed hard.

Then finally—finally—He stopped fighting himself.

He reached out, his fingers brushing her cheek, slow and hesitant like he was touching something fragile.

"Mia," he whispered, voice unsteady, "then I can't hold back anymore."

Her breath caught.

He didn't kiss her.Not yet.But the way he looked at her…It felt like he already had.

And then, right when the moment was about to break—

Adrian's phone buzzed violently.

He froze.Mia stepped back, startled.

He checked the screen.

His face changed instantly.

"What is it?" Mia whispered.

His hands clenched around the phone.

"It's security," Adrian said. "My brother escaped again."

Mia's heart dropped.

"But there's more."

Adrian turned toward her, his eyes turning cold.

"He wasn't alone this time."
