Chapter 26
The moon hung low over the pack grounds, casting long silver streaks across the forest. Aria's senses were on high alert, every rustle, every flicker of movement amplified in her mind. Something wasn't right. She could feel it—the ripple of deception, the sharp edge of envy slicing through the air.
Her sister, Selene, had been strangely distant all day, her smiles forced, her laughter hollow. Aria's wolf growled at the unease, warning her that danger was closer than it appeared.
Kael noticed her tension and slid his hand over hers, a silent anchor. "What's wrong?" he asked, voice low, intimate, protective.
"I can feel her," Aria said, jaw tight, eyes scanning the shadows. "Selene… she's plotting something. She's not happy about… us. About me. About you."
Kael's eyes darkened. "We've dealt with rivals. This is family. That can cut deeper."
Aria nodded, wolf instincts coiling inside her chest. The betrayal of blood was always sharper than that of enemies. She didn't speak, only followed Kael as he led her to the perimeter of the training grounds. Tonight, they would confront this subtle storm before it grew into a hurricane.
The first sign was subtle—a whisper of movement among the trees, too deliberate to be natural. Then a figure stepped into the moonlight: Selene. Her smile was sharp, predatory, and her eyes glittered with unspoken malice.
"You're quite the unstoppable pair," Selene said softly, circling them like a wolf assessing prey. "But even unstoppable wolves have weaknesses. Even… mates."
Aria's pulse quickened, anger and fear twisting in equal measure. "Selene… if this is about Kael and me, it's over. Leave us be."
Kael stepped forward, towering, muscles coiled, his aura commanding the forest itself. "Stay out of this," he warned, voice low but lethal. "Tonight isn't a game. Don't test me."
Selene laughed, a sound that chilled Aria's blood. "Oh, Kael… you think I'm joking? You've never seen the lengths I'll go to protect what I think is mine. Aria… you don't belong in this pack—not fully, not with him."
The words hit Aria like a blow. Her wolf flared, claws metaphorically scratching at the restraint she had maintained for years. Kael's hand tightened over hers. "You'll regret testing her," he growled, the alpha-to-be side of him emerging in full force.
Selene lunged suddenly, faster than human reflex, her intent clear. Aria reacted instinctively, shifting mid-step, letting her wolf instincts guide her. The forest erupted in a dance of claws, fangs, and speed that defied logic.
Through it all, Aria felt a dangerous, intoxicating pull toward Kael—not just physically, but in the shared rush of adrenaline and trust. Every time their hands brushed, every time they moved in perfect unison, the forbidden desire simmered, undeniable and scorching.
By the time the clash ended, Selene had retreated, a snarl curling her lips, her plan thwarted for now. But the threat lingered, the tension unresolved.
Aria leaned against Kael, heart pounding, wolf still alert. "She won't stop, will she?"
"No," Kael admitted, voice soft, almost tender, yet brimming with promise. "But neither will we. Whatever comes… we face it together. Always."
Aria closed her eyes briefly, letting herself savor the warmth of his presence, the protection and desire wrapped into one. She knew that tomorrow would bring new challenges—whispers in the pack, manipulation, jealousy—but for now, the fire between them burned hotter, unbreakable.
As they walked back toward the heart of the pack, Aria whispered, almost to herself, "Let her try. Let the pack see what happens when she underestimates me… underestimates us."
Kael's lips brushed her temple, voice a husky murmur. "Let them all see. And when they do, they'll realize—nothing, and no one, can come between us."
The night air carried their resolve, their desire, their bond. A storm was coming, yes, but for the first time, Aria wasn't afraid. With Kael by her side, and her wolf fully awakened, she knew the pack, the rivalry, and even her sister's betrayal were challenges she was ready to conquer.
