Chapter 32 - The Shadow of Selene

Chapter 32

The forest was thick with mist, the morning light struggling to break through. Aria moved silently alongside Kael, every sense on alert. Her wolf stirred restlessly beneath her skin, aware of danger before her human mind could even grasp it. Today wasn't just another patrol—it was Selene's first real test, a deliberate challenge to see how far their bond could be pushed.

‎Kael's hand brushed hers, subtle yet commanding. "Stay close, Aria," he murmured, eyes scanning the shadows. "She's watching, waiting for a mistake. But we won't give her one."

‎Aria's pulse quickened. Selene had made her intentions clear—she wanted Kael, the Alpha-to-be, for herself, and she wouldn't stop until she had disrupted everything between them. Every glance she threw in Aria's direction, every whisper she spread, was designed to crack the fragile walls of trust and ignite fear.

‎They reached the clearing where the pack often gathered for morning exercises. The other wolves were already assembled, their eyes sharp, some curious, others suspicious. And then she appeared—Selene, gliding into the light with a calculated smile, her gaze immediately locking on Aria.

‎"Good morning, mate," Selene said, voice smooth and dangerous, addressing Kael but with eyes that never left Aria. "I see the bond is… thriving. How adorable."

‎Aria's wolf growled beneath her skin. Every instinct screamed at her to protect herself, to protect what was hers. Kael stepped in front, a living shield, his presence radiating dominance. "Step carefully, Selene," he said, voice low, measured, yet dripping with authority. "This is Aria's territory as much as mine."

‎Selene laughed lightly, a sound that made Aria's teeth grit. "Oh, Kael, always so dramatic. I'm just here to observe… to ensure everything is fair." Her eyes flicked to Aria again, dangerous and calculating. "You've grown stronger. I must admit, you weren't what I expected."

‎Aria's cheeks burned, anger mixing with fear. The whispers in the pack seemed louder now, everyone sensing the tension crackling through the clearing. She wanted to snap back, to prove that Selene's games had no hold over her, but Kael's hand on her waist steadied her.

‎"Your games end now," Kael said, stepping closer to Aria, voice like steel. "Aria is mine. You will not touch her, you will not manipulate her, and you will not forget it."

‎Selene tilted her head, eyes glinting. "Bold words… but words are cheap. Actions… actions reveal truth." She turned slightly, gesturing toward the other pack members. "Perhaps we should test this bond. See if it's as unbreakable as you claim."

‎Aria felt the tension coil in her chest. Her wolf flared, sensing the challenge. She wanted to fight, to show strength, but she also knew that this wasn't just a duel—it was psychological warfare. Selene thrived on fear, on uncertainty, on pulling the untested into chaos.

‎Kael leaned close, whispering, "Trust me. Trust your wolf. We face her together." His eyes locked on hers, amber flames of desire and protection mingling. "No matter what she throws at us, we survive. Together."

‎Aria exhaled slowly, letting the heat of his gaze and the pull of the bond steady her. The whispers of the pack faded, the forest quieted, and all that remained was Kael, Selene, and the undeniable tension between them.

‎The first challenge came swiftly. Selene had planted doubts among the younger pack members, subtle comments, sly glances, insinuations that Aria was weak, unworthy, and easily swayed. Aria felt the sting immediately, sensing judgment and whispered fear. But Kael's hand remained firm at her side, grounding her.

‎"You're theirs to envy," Kael murmured, voice a low growl only she could hear. "Don't let them touch your mind, Aria. They can see all they want, whisper all they like—but none of it matters. None of them can take what's ours."

‎Aria's wolf howled inside her, a wild surge of power, pride, and defiance. The pack felt it, a ripple through the ranks, a warning that the bond she shared with Kael was not to be trifled with.

‎Selene's smile faltered slightly, sensing the shift in energy. "Impressive," she said softly, her tone almost reverent, but her eyes never left Aria. "Perhaps this will be more difficult than I anticipated."

‎Kael pulled Aria closer, his lips brushing her temple. "Difficult, yes. Impossible, no. You are mine. Always."

‎The tension didn't ease as they left the clearing. Aria knew that Selene would regroup, plot, and strike again. But for the first time, she realized something powerful—the bond she shared with Kael wasn't just about possession or desire. It was about strength, trust, and the undeniable fire that connected them. And Selene could try, twist, manipulate, but she could never sever that connection.

‎As they returned to their territory, the sun breaking fully over the forest, Aria let herself breathe, letting the warmth of Kael's presence fill her. She had survived Selene's first real attack, and her wolf thrummed with triumph.

‎And yet, a quiet warning lingered—Selene was patient, cunning, and relentless. The next move would be more dangerous. And when it came, Aria and Kael would need every ounce of courage, every pulse of desire, and every thread of trust to survive.

‎One thing was certain: the shadow of Selene would loom over them for a long time, but the bond of mate and wolf burned brighter, unstoppable, and irresistible.
