Chapter 33 - The Unseen Threat

Chapter 33

‎Night had fallen over the forest, shadows stretching like dark fingers across the clearing. Aria's senses were sharp, her wolf restless beneath her skin. Ever since Selene's challenge that morning, the tension had never left her. She could feel it lingering in every rustle of leaves, every distant howl, every subtle shift in the wind.

‎Kael walked beside her, steady and unyielding, but she knew he felt it too. Selene's presence was like a poison in the air—soft, invisible, but dangerous. "She's planning something," Aria said, voice barely a whisper. "I can feel it. She's not done."

‎Kael's jaw tightened. "I know. And we'll be ready. Whatever she throws, we face it together." His hand brushed hers, grounding her, reminding her that she wasn't alone in this.

‎They reached the edge of the forest, where the pack's training grounds lay. The younger wolves were sparring, unaware of the tension that had been simmering all day. But Aria's eyes were drawn to a figure in the shadows—Selene, barely visible, watching them from the treeline. Her smile was small, almost imperceptible, but it was enough to make Aria's stomach twist.

‎"She's testing us… again," Kael muttered. "And she's smart. She won't attack directly. Not yet."

‎Aria's wolf growled, instincts flaring. The thrill of the hunt, the need to protect, the fear of failure—all collided inside her. She wanted to confront Selene, to strike back, but Kael's hand on her waist kept her grounded. "We control our moves," he reminded her. "Not her. We stay ahead."

‎But Selene was patient, and patience was her weapon. By the time Aria and Kael noticed, whispers had begun to circulate among the younger wolves—subtle suggestions, sly comments, doubts planted in their minds. "Do you really think she's strong enough?" one whispered. "I heard the Alpha favors Selene… maybe Aria isn't the right mate."

‎Aria felt heat rise in her chest, anger and frustration boiling beneath her skin. Kael sensed it too, and he pressed close, whispering, "Don't let her words touch you. You are mine, Aria. Always. Every challenge strengthens us."

‎They continued their patrol, but the air remained thick with tension. Every shadow seemed alive, every whisper a potential trap. And then, as they neared the ridge overlooking the valley, a low growl cut through the night. Aria's wolf surged, claws itching, fangs bared.

‎From the darkness emerged not Selene, but a pack of rogue wolves, eyes glinting in the moonlight. Their intentions were clear—they had been tipped off, lured by Selene's influence, and were testing the bond of Aria and Kael.

‎Kael stepped in front, a living shield, muscles coiled, ready to strike. "Stay behind me, Aria," he commanded, voice steady but fierce. "We handle this together, but I need you focused."

‎Aria's pulse raced, wolf flaring. She didn't hesitate. Together, they faced the rogue pack, fighting side by side. Every strike, every dodge, every move was in perfect sync. Their connection—wolf and mate—was undeniable, a force that even the rogue wolves couldn't break.

‎When the fight ended, panting and bloodied but unbroken, Aria turned to Kael, eyes shining with adrenaline and awe. "We… we survived," she whispered.

‎Kael's hand cupped her cheek, thumb brushing lightly. "We always will, Aria. No one—no threat, no shadow, no Selene—can break us if we stay together."

‎But as they stood there, victorious yet wary, Aria felt the weight of Selene's unseen hand pressing down. The threat wasn't over. It would evolve, escalate, and become even more dangerous.

‎And deep down, Aria knew something else—Selene's game wasn't just about power. It was about desire, jealousy, and the obsession with a mate that was never hers to claim. And as the moon bathed them in silver light, Aria realized that every challenge from Selene only made the bond with Kael stronger, fiercer, and unbreakable.

‎One truth remained undeniable: no matter how cunning Selene's schemes, no matter how dangerous the world became, Aria and Kael would face it all… together.
